If anyone is wondering, Zeus made Ganymede his cupbearer and took him up to Olympus because he was so beautiful. I think Zeus wound up making Ganymede immortal so he would be forever young. Earlier iterations of the story say all of the gods recognized Ganymedes beauty and wanted him to become the official cupbearer of the gods and brought him to Zeus. The romantic or intimate relationship aspect with Zeus is a later add on to the story. Ganymede was either a noble or a prince of Troy that was raised as a humble shepherd and when the god's took notice of him, made him aware of his noble/high born status.
