The woman was thin and waifish. Her body was one smooth and lithe line, almost the opposite to the delightful Kali that Maloth planned on devouring in a few minutes. Her face was narrow, and her eyebrows were thin. Her hair was long and dark, cascading over her shoulders like a cloak. But it was her eyes that drew Maloth in. They were almond-shaped and cruel, a dark brown Maloth wanted to taste. She recognized the kindred spirit immediately, and some part of her even saw the threat in the simple human woman. Looking at her was like looking at Melior or Prim.

Perhaps there was more fun to be had here than she realized.

The door to the farmhouse opened behind Maloth and the farmwife stepped out. She had attempted to put her hair up into a loose tail, but it was already half undone. She carried a huge basin in her hands, resting the incredible weight on her impressive hips, but Maloth could see the strain of the woman’s muscles.

“Do you need help?” Maloth said, stepping up and grabbing the basin.

“Oh, you’re still here,” Kali said. “Thank you.” She run her hands over her apron as Maloth took the basin, then looked behind her at her house. “I — uh — thought you had gone.”

“No, but the priestess is.” Maloth smiled warmly as only a saint like Orilana could. “She won’t be bothering you again.”

“Oh it’s no bother,” Kali said. “It’s just that Harj doesn’t like guests distracting me from my chores.”

“I can help.”

Maloth controlled her rage as Kali’s eyes nervously flicked back to her house. Everything’s value was measured in how much of Harj’s displeasure it would conjure. Instead, Maloth hefted the heavy basin higher, “I’m strong.”

“I’m sure you are.” Kali twisted her lips as she pondered. Her eyes lingered on Orilana’s badges marking her rank and station. “Captain of the guard.”

“I’m not like that priestess,” Maloth said quickly. “You could curse like a sailor or do your chores naked, and you won’t hear anything about Azora’s judgement or modesty or anything.” Maloth raised a free hand, and Kali’s eyes widened when she saw the goddess holding the basin with one hand. “I swear on my goddess. I just want to help you do your chores, maybe wash up from the road.” Kali’s eyes darted back to her house, and Maloth added, “I’ll wash in the barn. I don’t need to intrude on your beautiful home at all.”

Kali sighed and ran her hands along the apron she was now wearing — in the same boorish brown as the rest of her clothing — and looked back at her home. “I could use the help,” she said. She looked back at Maloth. “And you have kind eyes.”

Maloth’s smile spread. “Just show me where to carry this.”

They spent the afternoon doing chores together. Kali kept mentioning that they would need to hurry in order to have time to make dinner for Harj, and Maloth expended tiny bits of her divine power to speed things along. She didn’t want to rush things too much simply because finishing would mean leaving. Honestly, the newer part of her — the side Orilana had infected her with — enjoyed being put to use and getting things done. It also enjoyed the simple pleasure of Kali’s humor. She was a kind woman with a bawdy sense of humor that made Maloth laugh — truly laugh.

But the shadow of Harj hung over everything. Kali was like a mouse forced to live with a cruel cat. Maloth delight in cruelty that was consensual, that was saturated with pleasure or enriched with the death/life cycle. She had no patience for a bully. She didn’t torment her victims unless it would result in them begging for absolute bliss and submission. Harj was using Kali like she was cattle, and she feared him as a cow fears the hot prod.

And yet Maloth never saw Harj. More than once he summoned Kali with a roar, but he never came out to the barn or the fields where Kali and Maloth sweated. When Maloth gently brought up the topic, Kali avoided the topic of her husband until they were deep in the fields, covered in sweat and stripped down to bare basics of modesty in the sweltering heat. In the comfort of distance, Kali had a dozen things to say about her husband.

“You know he didn’t even build the house,” she said, pointing to their ramshackle farmhouse. “His father did.” She spread her arms. “His father made all of this, gave it to his two boys, and they pissed it down the drain.”

“I’m sorry,” Maloth said. “Is there anything —”

“And I really mean pissed. I mean, goddess knows I do most of the world around here, but he’s supposedly the brains of the operation. Not the figures and finances, mind you. He wakes up one morning and says the future is in beans, so he burns all our money in beans as soon as he can. Of course, this is some hot take he’s gotten from one of his bum friends during his poker game.”

“That’s really —”

“Goddess spare me from the confidence of card players.” Kali turned towards Maloth, and the goddess smiled. She loved seeing the fire in the woman. It was good to know she could get upset at something. It was amusing enough that the goddess didn’t mind being interrupted. “You know he says we can’t afford kids. Afford what? They’re free.”

Maloth laughed.

“He says we need to save up for one, but then he keeps burning money.”

“On beans and cards.”

“I wish it were just that. You know I’ve heard it from Nyx, his brother’s wife —”

“Is the one that lives across the way?” Maloth said, pointing to the farmhouse next to Kali’s.

“Aye,” Kali said. “Harj’s brother, Vren, and his wife, Nyx, live there.”

“Sorry for interrupting,” Maloth said. “What was she saying?”

She listened on as Kali said she suspects her husband of spending their profits drinking when he goes down to town to sell each week. She doesn’t think he’s trying to ruin her life, but he’s doing the bare minimum, and he’s dragging her down with her.

“Is Vren doing any better than Harj?” Maloth asked.

Kali shook her head. “They’re two peas in a pod, Vren and Harj.”

“Sounds like a ruined pod.”

Kali smiled ruefully. It took too much self-control for Maloth to resist kissing her then and there. She could probably have Kali for a romp in the field right now. It would be sweet — a favored memory Kali would hold onto all her life. But then Kali would go back to making Harj’s dinner, and Maloth would move on. She didn’t want to linger longer than she had to, but she didn’t want to leave things like this. Beautiful women like Kali and Nyx — clever and resourceful women — deserved better than this. This was Azora’s doing. It was duty and obligation and noble suffering. Even Orilana’s goodness bristled as the willful slavery these women signed up for in “holy” matrimony. Azora’s influence ran deep like mold.

“You should be the one going to market,” Maloth said. “I bet you could get better prices and wouldn’t waste it all on booze.”

“Bah,” Kali waved a hand at her dismissively. “That would be just another chore.”

“KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLIIII!!!” Harj’s roar ripped over the fields, and Kali’s swagger and energy died immediately. She dropped her spade and ran back to the house, attending to her needy and childish husband. She was his dog at his beck and call.

Maloth knew she needed to make her move then.

Maloth used a few complex spells to finish the chores while Kali was gone. When the woman returned — red in the face and exhausted — Maloth was washing up. Her underclothes were soaked, translucent, and clinging to the sensual curves of Orilana’s body. The cold water ran down her body, and Maloth didn’t blush when Kali’s eyes fixated on her stiff nipples.
 “I finished,” Maloth said.

“What?” The shock broke the spell of Orilana’s body. Kali looked out to the field and the harvest Maloth had gathered. “That’s impossible.”

Maloth shrugged. “I told you they trained us relentlessly at the Abbey.”

“In fieldwork?”

“Work is work.”

Kali wiped her brow. “Well you just may have saved me. That’s plenty of time to make supper.”

“Maybe you can take a break?” Maloth suggested. “Wash up?”

“Harj doesn’t like me wasting water.”

“Oh.” Maloth looked at the well water she’d gathered. “Should I not have —”

Kali waved her off. “You’re a guest. Help yourself.” Kali collapsed in the dirt, leaning back, and resting on her hands while stretching her legs. “Goddess’s tits, I’m sore.” Kali said. Her eyes widened when she remembered her company. “Oh, sorry.”

Maloth smiled. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve lived under her statues most of my life.” Maloth's smile turned into a flirty smirk. “She does have nice tits.”

Kali’s smile widened and she broke out into a hearty laugh, slapping her knee as she fell back into the dirt.

Maloth wasted no time, while Kali looked up at the sky, she moved to the woman and grabbed her foot, quickly taking off the heavy and raggedy boots she wore. Kali sat up in confusion, but Maloth was quick, pressing her thumb into the arch of Kali’s foot and starting a massage.

Kali sat up in shock. “What are you — oooooooooooooh.” Kali moaned and tilted her head back as Maloth worked on the knot in her arch.

“You deserve a break,” Maloth said. “And if you won’t have a bath with me, this will have to do.”

“If you insist,” Kali said. She sank back into the earth. “I won’t fight you.”

“Good,” Maloth said. She resisted the urge to kiss Kali’s beautiful feet. They were dirty and sore, but Maloth knew with one long run of her tongue, she could have the woman cumming in moments. “Just sink back and relax.”

“Right. Whatever you say.”

“When I’m done here, I’ll do your back.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Kali said, closing her eyes and melting into a series of moans as her body yielded to Maloth’s touch.
