I could be wrong, but i think his dad going missing was mentioned, very briefly off hand in the first season, when talking about how he made money going in gates because he had to in order to pay for his mom's hospital bills and his sisters school.

Jinwoo taking Jin Ho as a little brother probably gives him some protection in the future but pulls him into Jinwoo's orbit of crazy things happening. Jinwoo mentioned that his level increase gave him more summoning power. And he does share XP with the minions, they all level up. Once the final boss is beaten there is a short time period to get back out of the gate before it closes, so somehow Jinwoo's dad didn't get out of the gate before it closed.

For Jin-woo's dad, he was in for 10 years. The gate he went through back then was a regular gate, in which time goes the same with the outside world. Only red gates, have a time difference.
