It's the eve of the festival and Rimuru has some powerful and interesting new guests to entertain! We had a little bit of audio issues with one of our microphones in this one and possibly the next few videos we upload but I cleaned it up the best I could. Sometimes these things happen.

Oh no, CHRIS! Your mic is off, I miss you already! 😭 - You guys asked a couple episodes ago what makes this isekai so different feeling from all the others. I feel like this episode is a perfect embodiment of the answer: You have Rimuru who optically is such an unlikely leader, but who is perfect for the role because while he isn't perfect he actively listens to his people and the concerns surrounding him. He learns from his mistakes, and corrects his own behavior instead of expecting the world to just fall in line with him. When someone gasses him up he always tries to meet their expectations of him. He learned 'good enough' isn't good enough when you have an entire nation counting on you. And he's carried that lesson into his protective instincts. He makes himself clear that he has no problem with people believing whatever they believe or being whatever kind of person they are unless they intentionally bring harm to his people. He's watched his people be slaughtered once because of stupidity and greed, he has no intention of ever letting anyone bring harm to what's his ever again. - Then you have the surrounding characters. They aren't just the typical monsters or even humans. They all have a story, they all have their own reasons to want a better world and to actively fight for it. A lot of isekai have world battles happening or treachery. Slime just does a better job of making you care. Yeah, there are a lot of meetings. There are plenty of episodes you don't have any major fights happening. It's those episodes that draw you in. You care that Tempest's people learned to make their own textiles, or how to build houses. You care that there are children that were ripped from their homes in a different world and were just expected to die from their own powers. You care that a hyperactive goofy pixie was alone in a labyrinth for so long. You care that she now has friends and people who count on her to do her job again. This show even made you care about a dragon that rampaged MANY nations. We WANTED him to be released and have a chance to live a productive life again. - The human characters are portrayed different from a lot of anime. You have your villians, and your greed hungry despots. But then you have a good portion of them actually learning harmony is possible. Just normal people whom probably have never even seen a live monster are now having the opportunity to interact with them on a regular basis now that there are SAFE roads to travel. Roads that were built and are protected by monsters. When isolation is broken people are capable of immeasurable growth. - I keep thinking back to a quote that just sums up this anime for me- "Faith doesn't make things easy, it makes things possible." By Rimuru existing in Tensura he created opportunities for its people to learn. About the world, themselves, and eachother. It's not an easy journey, but now the journey is possible whereas before no one was ever encouraged to try. - Then of course you have the villians. Yeah they all suck, but all of them have their own reasons, personalities, and varying degrees of darkness. Not all of them are mustache twirlers. Not all of them care about money. Not all of them even care if their plans actually pan out. Some of them are even fiendishly clever and certainly a mental match for Rimuru. I always appreciate that the variety and motivations of the bad guys in this media have always been very similar to real life. Sometimes people just turn out bad, there's isn't always a deep reasoning. - This isekai also isn't afraid to just leave some plots lingering. There isn't an ABC storyline where every bit gets resolved before the rest of the plot moves forward. There are loose ends. A LOT OF THEM. We even witness at least two people we are aware of being bad guys attending the festival this episode and interacting with Rimuru and crew. The writers aren't afraid to make us wait and anticipate whether or not our main characters are even noticing anything wrong happening. The way the plot twists and turns it's easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. Seeing the villians so blatantly just hanging out in Tempest is an abrupt gut punch and reminder that the world is still turning outside of Tempest and it's festival. S tier plot manipulation. - So besides Chris' mic betraying you this was an AWESOME reaction. I'm glad you clocked the comparison to the World's Fair! That is exactly Rimuru's play here. Show them what you have, what they could have, and what they can only have by forging relations with Tempest. Masterful. I'm so excited for the tournament to begin, you guys are going to have so much fun! 🩷💛🩵

Its ok to pull the strings as long as the people on the other end know and are happy with having their strings pulled.

It is basically impossible to get sushi fish, so no sushi: in this case, Rimuru went down and caught the fish himself. They need to do something so Rimuru doesn’t have to do it himself. Normally they can’t eat ocean fish: the southern ocean is too far away and transportation is a problem, while the northern ocean is too dangerous to fish in. Hakurou learned to prepare sushi from his otherworlder grandfather. The fish is supposed to taste like fatty tuna. Also, Japanese are always so proud of their beer, it's like Americans in that they like it cold and carbonated, so they make a big deal about those qualities impressing everyone. In general, Rimuru liked the atmosphere of Japanese and Western style blending together, which you could only see here in Tempest. I got the idea from the LN that this was unusual in Japan and reflected the advocacy of the author himself, imo. So the fish is called a spear tuna. The soy sauce was another Tempest product now ready for practical use. Elmesia: The vessel Elmesia used to arrive in Tempest was being carried by a Dragon King. I previously used Dragon Lords as the terminology for the most evolved dragons, but it is the same as Dragon Kings. Ou = king = lord. Dragon Lords are sentient. Elmesia was the one who founded Thalion, remember, and if the Dynasty is 2000 years old, then she is at least that old. The only thing I was a little disappointed about is that her entourage was supposed to be a lot more showy and impressive. Erald was seen to be practically unrecognizable in his ceremonial garb, and there was supposed to be a more military guard. Oh, well, I wanted to see that.😿 “And we had to watch out for her entourage as well. Each guard practically oozed power. They were dressed in ceremonial gear, but even that stuff was all magically charged. All Legend-class, I’m sure….They had to be at least as strong as Arnaud and the paladins—or maybe, judging by the quality of their gear, the emperor’s guard was even better.” When Rimuru discovers that it’s Elmesia’s arrival that’s happening, Gazel says this is too much even for him, and even those not at the banquet are probably sending messages home. Elmesia hadn't apparently made a public appearance in decades. To add to what was in the anime about the relative power of Dwargon, Thalion and Council of the West, the latter was probably the biggest force out there, but it couldn't act at a moment’s notice, due to its parliamentary system. Thalion and Dwargon could, even if technically weaker. That Elmesia's Heroic Aura was stronger than Gazel’s meant that she was at least as, if not more powerful than, Gazel, maybe at demon lord (unawakened) level? John commented that Elmesia didn’t just say “Sou desu ne”, she said “Sou desu wa ne”. I am guessing a bit here, but “wa” is an ending particle that doesn’t mean anything really in this context, but is said by women, generally. It sounds more polite and ladylike. All the ojou-sama say it in anime! The rest of what she said was formal and polite, and so were Rimuru’s responses. When asking for a private meeting, however, Elmesia spoke much more casually, which made Rimuru feel a greater affinity with her. Recall that Elmesia had decided they (she) had no choice but to go. Now that she's here, she's going to try to conduct some business commensurate with the importance of her leaving her country. She wouldn't have gone if she didn't need to. Milim: Rimuru actually asked Frey, do you have any problem eating bird? (The word for chicken is essentially “bird meat”. Rimuru just said “bird”.) After Rimuru had offended Frey, and she had “tested” him, it was made clearer why she did that. If Milim was using Rimuru as a role model, Frey wanted to see if Rimuru was a good role model. Milim was no longer a tyrant, even if not quite a benevolent ruler. She was willing to listen to people a bit more, and Frey thought Rimuru might be the reason. Milim got the message: it's ok to play in the Dungeon, but moderation was key. Just don't cause offense like Carrion. The two harpies with Frey are Frey's top two subordinates, and are called the Twin Wings. Which leads to the scene with Shuna and Middray and the food. Another language note: Shuna spoke to Middray the way you would give an order to a child. It's technically polite, but.... Mostly you'd say please. No please here. Japanese cooking (washoku) does have a philosophy that I won’t go into here but it’s based on harmony. When Shuna was describing the food, she first used a single dish to represent one country, then used multiple dishes to represent multiple countries. Even though Shuna was describing food, she related it to Rimuru's ideals. Maybe Rimuru didn't realize it himself, but Shuna was describing Rimuru's desires. Those are the same desires that Rimuru's Skills reflect. He desires connection and bonds. Which can also be described as harmony. Forgetting food for a moment, it's the thing he desires most. Shuna really had insight into Rimuru's basic motivations, which in one sense is obvious because he constantly says it (let's get along), but in another, it goes beyond that. This desire for harmony is so deep, that Rimuru automatically includes everyone by default, and it takes a conscious and deliberate decision for him to exclude someone, such as into the enemy camp. It's so difficult for Rimuru to find sufficient reason to do that, that once he makes that decision, it is practically irrevocable. It's why he becomes merciless to those people. It's also why he's not going to give up on Yuuki unless forced to. Maybe it's loyalty as a type of bond, but it's not blind. Shuna is able to articulate Rimuru’s vision better than he can because to him it is so instinctual that he can’t put it into words, but Shuna has been observing him, and sees Rimuru as he is. “Honestly, Shuna had impressed me just now. Not only her speech but the glorious food that did so much of the talking for her. People like Middray, afraid of values different from their own, now found it in themselves to dream of a future where humans and monsters worked together—all thanks to the example of ‘harmony’ within cuisine.” As for Milim saying “Itadakimasu”, I am going to repeat what I heard about what was added to it, “na no da”. I’m not really sure how I would translate it, maybe something like “It’s itadakimasu!”. I heard it is common for characters like gods or supernatural beings saying it. I don’t think it’s common in Japanese speech. But Milim says it all the time. The part where Mjollmile wandered in, that was for the sole purpose of him reporting that he had some concerns that he had already dismissed. It was to the effect that the minor merchants who came along with the major merchants were ones he mostly didn't recognize. He had personally invited the major merchants as ones who he was friends with, who were most trustworthy and whom he knew best. Those guys vouched for the minor merchants, so he stopped worrying, but I guess he still had a nagging feeling. Why was Mariabel there? I think, just to observe for now. Probably. The festival had some invited guests, but mostly everyone was welcome. I didn't notice Momiji until my 3rd watch. It took me even longer to discover the couple from Uratol in the OVA's with the children, and apparently the Coleus brothers were there too. I may have missed some others. Later Rimuru held a meeting that wasn’t in the anime. Many things happened that I think will be covered later, so I will skip them now. Souei had wanted to discuss Masayuki’s entrance into town and that he was going to fight in the tournament. Shion said she had wanted to “dispatch” Masayuki. Souei said he had stopped her. Rimuru thought, so that's why Shion had been fairly well-behaved; while Shion had been maturing, they couldn't let their guard down yet. Then Diablo chimed in saying, he fully understands Shion's feelings, seeing someone belittle their master. Sometimes in the anime they mention Benimaru as someone who is one of those who can be a bit of a hothead, or more accurately, a battle junkie. Rimuru doesn't just have to worry about a few usual suspects flying off the handle, all the monsters have some tendencies in that direction. It's probably one of the reasons humans and monsters have historically been at odds. It is built into the monsters’ personalities. Benimaru is actually near the top of the list of those who could do something aggressive, and whom Rimuru has to worry about. However, he is also one of the most improved. But it does come up a lot more than is portrayed in the anime. Rimuru’s Speech. One of the things people (in rl) are always saying about Rimuru is that they'd want to live in his country. There were 100,000 people listening to Rimuru’s speech in the LN. Rimuru felt a sense of fulfillment that he had created the nation he dreamed of. Most of the speech in the anime hit all the same points as in the LN. He wanted the people to accept him for who he was, mostly meant for the common people in the crowd. For the nobles, he wanted to encourage them to regard them positively and form friendly relations. But he also felt he needed to warn them. One of the things Rimuru was thinking at this part was that a ruler should not show indecision, because it was the people who would suffer. It was a country's job to protect the lives and fortunes of its citizens. His most important job was to keep the people safe. It’d be great to have a world without military power, but it was impossible. The people could dream about it during peace, but the rulers couldn't because a nation needs to be able to deal with any situation that arises, at minimum. But to the merchants, adventurers, and ordinary peasantry he promised he wouldn't lay a hand on them (unless, of course, they committed a crime). And he invited anyone to consider moving there if they seek work. In return he guaranteed them certain rights, while they still had responsibilities.

You covered a lot of the things I left out of my own answer to their question about what makes this isekai better than the others that I put on Episode 17.5. But you also reinforced some of the same things I mentioned, and stated some things better than or in a different way than I did. I enjoy reading other people's answers to this question.

Cerulean Spectre

Amazing synopsis 🧡

Very well said LaLa! I couldn't agree more with you on all of this. The main part being this anime does make you care about all of the characters and their side stories. Just about every little thing that happens in this show brings with it emotions and feelings. We get so excited to see all the characters interacting with each other no matter what they end up doing. Like something as simple as a bowl of soup being used as a way to describe what happens when harmony is achieved between a land and all of it's peoples. I love this show so much and it's always going to have a special place in my heart. Thank you for all your input. I'm so stoked for the future of Slime.

theheck

Haha I freaking loved it! Mustachioed Rimuru!

I just want to thank you again for your breakdowns on these videos. I have learned so much going through and reading them after every reaction. You bring to light a lot of the things the anime doesn't show or we might overlook and it's freaking awesome! So for real thank you for all the work you put into these comments. It means a lot to us and I'm so glad to have you here enjoying the world of Slime with us!

theheck

I mean right. If they like it then why not

Don’t forget Shuna is scary all on her own.
