I’m constantly looking for ways to make our animations sharper and more detailed. The catch is that, for large-scale production, I can currently only render them at 960x540. Plus, since I sometimes have to crop the frame to hide glitches or artifacts, the resolution drops even further, almost down to pixels. That’s why I’m always exploring different upscaling options.

I've tried various methods before, but nothing really stood out to me. Now, I have a new option I’d love for you to evaluate.

The first version is the original. The second version is after the upscale.

The first one feels a bit more "real" and natural. The second one has a slight "plastic" look to it, but the image is significantly sharper and the movement is much smoother thanks to frame interpolation.

What do you guys think? Which one looks better to you?

The upscaled version looks much better on PC's where people have higher resolution monitors I feel like... at least since I'm running 1440p and have an OLED screen. The regular version might be better for at least android users though, but I clearly see the grainyness, and it's less fluid. However, I would understand it if you kept it as is, and maybe had a separate upscale.zip. I know that someone else already makes a HFR mod for BoM, but I don't remember if he also upscales.

Yeah I agree with the last comment on a 4K screen Anim1 looks legit Novel Anim looks a bit grainy but it may feel better on lower res screens

I compared both versions on 30 inch monitors with a 2560 x 1600 Resolution (so an almost similar Resolution as StrykerNL has). I needed to look at it in 800% to spot some minor differences. November_0 seems to have a tiny little bit more contrast, but sharpness? I would rate them almost equal. But maybe my monitors with S-IPS-Panel are to old to see more differences... For me at least it seems that it would not be worth the effort.

Le immagini reali, anche se meno nitide sono migliori

On my 27 inch 5k imac the upscale is noticeably better

Excalibur

I have a high def 30 inch monitor and the upscale version is definitely better, though not sure the time or cost differential is worth it.

It's done in parallel. Yes, it takes some time, but not that much—about 2-3 minutes each. There are just a lot of them.

Upscaled version looks the best on my machine

eatnapeach

i like the 1st 450 but they both look great

i'm playing in 2560x1440p , ' 27 Monitor, HDR always on. In my opinion the differences are marginal, i switched between the pictures more than 20 times. Higher even better. Do you have the resources do it to us :) If you don't have them, it's not worth it. Your Pictures, Events/Videos look always well.

I like more 450_anim1 - thk

The quality is good in both of them. But holy crap, the FPS on the anim looks about 24fps (standard film) while the anim1 looks like 60fps Edit: The more I watch them the biggest difference is in FPS. Even if I shrink them both down to 512 resolution the FPS difference is HUGE. When I go really big (I have 3440x1440 monitor) the details really jump out on the Anim1 (like the folds of the foreskin) Also, I'm not sure how rendering works, but it seems like the depth of field setting changes for each camera position. When you're looking straight on there's no depth of field at all, when looking from the side it's easily detectable

On iPhone and Android tablet Oneplus pad 3. I really couldn't tell the difference on these devices. Both appeared fluid and detailed.

Oh yea, WOW! That upscaled version looks fantastic on my big gaming monitor (QD-OLED @ 3440 x 1440). Its like I'm getting a BJ.

I took the time to download the files and look at them side-by-side. I find that 450anim1 and 451anim1 are better—though, frankly, the difference is minimal. It really goes to show just how much of an insane workload you take on to provide us with the highest possible quality! Thank you for your efforts!

I have an old Dell 32" 3840x2160 monitor, and I don't see a notable difference. I am old, though. ;)
