Love your reactions... the emperor's father was a real horrible guy - he not only took Lishu as a concubine at the age of 9 but remember they said the Empress Dowager was extremely young when she gave birth to the Emperor. As for the poisoning, at the beginning of the episode you hear Lishu's ladies in waiting complaining that she is a picky eater. The cook prepared the fish dish with jellyfish for her but it was served to MaoMao instead of Lishu. Her food taster switched it just to force her to eat something she didn't like (hence her evil smile), not knowing that it could actually kill her. It just so happened that someone poisoned the food trying to kill Lishu at the same time so it was given to MaoMao who recognized the poison. MaoMao scared the taster because people didn't have a concept of allergies back then so she really really didn't want her trying to give her fish again. MaoMao is smart but even she learned to give up on trying to build a tolerance to buckwheat when her throat started closing - some things like the immune system, they just wouldn't have any idea about at that time.
