James of The Living Philosophy interviews me and pushes against some of my ideas.

We talk about Jregs Toronto project, my year and a half of creative turmoil, Peterson, Jung, and whether God is real or metaphorical.

''"""'"''''"''

I interviewed James almost an entire year ago for the Jordan Peterson video in a 3 hour sprawling talk that is kind of out of date. We reference it all over the place here, as I really Patreon-pilled him which influenced what he did online for the next year (he told me that).

I interviewed James at first because he has a sympathetic critical perspective on Jordan Peterson, as a former fan that ultimately desires a more unifying and sensitive community than Petersonism appears capable of generating.

In the last year James has made many admirable strides as a philosopher that wants to understand and connect with a wide range of people, remaining really averse to indulging culture war tropes and highly open to revising himself for the better.

His videos are good! I respect this person and his thinking, as you'll see.

This was a really nice talk, it was interesting hearing CJ work though ideas in a different context and dig a bit deeper. Ideal audio content for reflecting on life.

Unheard History

Watched/listened during a walk and couldn’t wait to get back and dig into some of these ideas. Loved the discussion on friction in particular

Has CJ seen Solaris? There's a thematic through-line in the film of how humanity always sees itself in that which it doesn't understands - that is, humans go to space not to find the unknown but to find mirrors of themselves. The conversation on God reminded me of that idea. How common it is to conceptualize this infinitely unknowable entity as like, a guy. I am also in the "God is community/relationships" spectrum and part of what I don't really like about the God Guy concept is how it ends up sneaking that commitment to community behind a commitment to A Guy, which like, I don't like that! People should know what they're committed to. Otherwise the idea becomes so exploitable. So many people I know treat everyone around them and themselves like garbage because they're supposedly committed to God. And even if I say they're not really committed to God, it is undeniable that they're committed to some God-shape, even if it's not fulfilling the pragmatic function I think this concept should have. The idea that if there was only one guy in the world he wouldn't create gods is compelling but I'm not sure I fully believe in it. Like, maybe you wouldn't have religion per se as this communal experience but surely they'd still have a relationship to the ecosystem around them, right? To the animals and the plants and the experience of living... Even in Genesis, God creates Man to take care of the world... This was a really lovely interview. I need to watch more The Living Philosophy, he's a great listener and speaker, and you can tell he treats philosophy with a lot of care and respect. It was nice to get a little preview of the upcoming lecture as well as an update on the JP video. I'm sad we won't be seeing it for a while, but whatever it takes to make it the best it can be. Can't wait for the canonical event that will be its eventual drop in 5 years!

I'm really intrigued by the community space you mentioned, being someone who is trying to foster a similar one with people in my "kin" (as a Torontonian also). Do you guys have open studio sessions or anything open to public?

Hi CJ, I really enjoyed this discussion. I can't quite remember how I found your videos, I think I got rabbitholed from my illicit interest in Kanye to hip-hop parts of youtube, onto FD Signifier videos and then clicked on to seven deadly art sins during a period where I was already making art. But I remember a few months back during the Peterson video preview era you were saying you didn't have the capacity to engage with Jung's thought. Now you're playing with shadow work and discussing his concept of the capital S Self. So as magic and quantum mechanics come up for the first time (that I've noticed on your channel) I just found it funny, because about a year ago I found the idea of magic and gods childish and laughable, but now I see competent interesting people at least talking about them in all sorts of places. When a person gets into a fashion of thought they start to see it everywhere and use it as a rubric or lens to frame everything (we're lazy beings) so from a magical perspective when you're learning to pleasure yourself via making nice with your anxieties, that's a magical act, because you took a spell from a book without a material scientific basis and simply tried it to see if it worked. The only change is for you the observer, it's not scientific (what works for you might not work for another) but then others meet a person with a changed outlook. It's quite practical. But so, I've not studied magic, I just bumped into its ideas in various places and didn't go too far getting sucked in. I think it's ok if you take it lightly, use it primarily to improve yourself, never to curse people, but maybe just maybe to try and charm them. How Jung (who practiced magic) famously responded on the question of God's reality, an ineffable experience, wasn't to try say how or what he knows, he simply said "I know". To paraphrase Pusha T - "If you know you gnosis." Taken inappropriately it'd be cultural appropriation to subsume hip-hop into magic by calling it an egregore, but it's a really simple useful description and lens to look at it through.

Super good convo. Got me thinking more about spirituality and God, which is always good. I love this idea that God is relationship with others, and could even go a step further and say an entity is fueling this, but I don't quite see why that negates the power of perceiving reality as one intelligent being. I think CJ was saying that 'I am God', is bringing God down to your level, but I think anyone with a true understanding of God as the universe is able to perform an ego death, thus expanding their understanding to others around them and feeling as though they are God. There is something bigger than ourselves, and it's others.

Thanks for posting this. It really gave some me some context and clarification re: the God is a person/ possible thesis for your live show .

At the end when you talked about how Philosophy is play. Play as in games, but also maybe play as in theatre… It has me thinking about Fascism. These ideas are all forms of play. Fascists play with other humans on a grand scale, and many of us believe them, rather than seeing it as a form of play acting. They are trying to re-write our realities into their fantasy but it doesn’t work. It can’t work. It doesn’t engage us, because we don’t have to agree to that form of play. We don’t want to play, we don’t have to play along, but we don’t have to lay down and let them checkmate us. We have to start our own play, something more fun and engaging to the larger audiences. We need to like collectively create a new game that they can join in on if they are ready to stop playing a game that we won’t let them win at.
