When she mentioned you on her video I knew this was meant to happen

Early in the conversation there was a throughline about online independent philosophers making an unconnected point that never gets built on, and how that also characterized analytic philosophy, which feels right to me. As a hobbyist philosophyish person who consumed it as much for entertainment as for being informed, reading things that build and get built off of feels extremely good and important. I've tried to enjoy essays and lectures from the analytic tradition, and it just isn't as compelling as something flavored by lived experience that doesn't get boiled down to something strictly proveable. The intersections of different traditions like Hegel, Marx, freud, and others make them more legible and interesting to me, not less. Also goal directed terms vs descriptive terms, and adding an objective makes things objective are really fun ideas, this might be the simplest explanation I've heard for them. Excellent word crafting. Finally the fashion blogs previously posted on this patron lead me down rabbit holes and web searches that ended with me buying good earth tone pants and vintage jackets off of grailed, thx for talking about them before.

At risk of oversharing, I feel like the BPD superpower is hyperempathy, I've dated someone who most likely had it and it's like they laser in on your personality and you connect on every level in an intense way. It's like the uncanny ability to win someone over in a single conversation.

Ooooooh the grad school of it all!!! (I’m applying for English PhD programs rn so this is HITTING) There’s a lot of juice here about art vs academia, and what happens when you make them kiss. This happens a lot with creative writing that incorporates research and theory. We want to avoid art that postures at being scholarly & substantive when it’s rlly just navel gazey! The YouTuber that screams buzzwords in a juicy way and then everyone claps! (But the flip side of that ofc is education access and intellectualism, the whole reason that higher ed is lowkey evil etc) Something I’ve realized recently is that research writing is, like Olivia said, trying to be as clear and specific as possible to communicate your point. And creative writing is! All about gesticulating violently /around/ your point and telling your audience to do the math. Like sometimes I love making my points in a flash essay bc I don’t want to say the quiet part out loud. But research is ALL ABOUT saying the quiet part out loud, explaining the joke, etc etc

As someone diagnosed with autism, I was really feeling the conversation about what you can trust with trying to get a diagnosis. Even with it pretty much as confirmed as much as it can be, I get a weird imposter syndrome sometimes because it really is such a spectrum. There are entire spheres of autistic experience which are alien to me somehow. It can be tough to see how anyone can actually get diagnosed with something that seems so slippery. What shocks me and brings me back from the spiraling is the fact that when I meet people who have autism there's always an instant unspoken understanding even before I find out that they have it too. It's the Spider-Man pointing at other Spider-Man meme! I think this is along the lines of what CJ says about BPD ("You have BPD if you need DBT" or something like that), there's definitely a reason these people are all in this basket, and it seems like the most pragmatic way to decide if you have it is to figure out if learning that fact about yourself makes things better for you. If you can use that knowledge to improve your life, then it is true that you have whatever it may be. That seems like the most honest way to understand the mess that is the brain. Loved this whole conversation, much to chew on!

just watched "when is offense justified" and it was great! it really does feel like a well-cited essay i learned a lot :)

Lucas Regis

I've been passively watching Olivia's stuff as it got to my recommendations but this ep convinced me to finally subscribe. Loved the philosophy talk. The chemistry this episode was off the charts. One of my faves of this series for sure ❤️

CJ the X and OliSUNvia CANCELED No I love this, amazing discussion. I was kind of stunned at CJ’s feeling of….ungroundedness? around fashion, because as a nonbinary AMAB person who (mostly) hates how I dress and has no idea how I want to present, CJ is the first person I’ve seen wear and present in ways that made me feel like “yeah, that! What I want is kinda like that.” I really need friends who like…know stuff about clothes/presentation and teach me things. The discussion of carceral feminism was just…*chef’s kiss*. I also appreciate the vulnerability of sharing their opinions about it online, because there’s so much of people just taking you in bad faith and not fully listening to what you’re saying when you talk about how to actually be effective when responding to different forms of harm (and even determining what harm happened in the first place). I also really appreciated what CJ shared around seeing Jordan Peterson and considering how the audience is responding to you. I don’t think I really considered this distinction between “the audience follows you because they like you even if they’re not fully understanding or engaging with what you’re saying,” and “the audience is genuinely engaging with the points you’re making.” I think a big part of why I’m here, and why I read the books and listen to the albums and post about them, is because I don’t feel like people are here because they uncritically like CJ and vibe with them. I feel like we all want to actively engage with the ideas we’re presented with and learn what we can gain from them from each of our unique perspectives. I joined the Patreon to give money to someone who’s contributed to my thinking. I post on the Patreon because it feels like an enlightenment era French coffeehouse where we’re all sharing ideas and trying to make sense of the world, except we actually give a fuck about the humans who they thought didn’t qualify as humans.

when differentiating philosophers from educators, you've definitely mentioned the repeating yourself thing ... as i have been writing and researching more and more on artifice vs art in advertising the repetition is rly just getting into the nooks and crannies of the idea. sometimes ifl i am repeating myself but really i am just understanding the specific context where the idea applies (from above) or resides (within). yes pros and weaknesses too. also 38:00 this is why i don't say i engage with any [field/discipline] i will let the people who watch and work w me decide my title hahahhahaha

I'm very happy to have been introduced to Olivia's videos this way. I find her videos extremely well scripted, her approach to serious topics very patient and nuanced. I also really enjoyed this conversation between the two of you, it was both intellectually engaging and surprisingly intimate. I hope that you find occasion to collaborate again - I would like to see what would come of a combination of your energies in a more formal format.

Joha

This so interesting, ive kind of had a bad perception of her channel/video and im not even sure why anymore! I put her into my mind as a „content creator“ instead of someone who is trying to do transformative social commentary and philosophizing. Loaded sentence, but i just didnt watch her videos. So this is great to actually see and listen too her here and be able reevaluate this.

Oh, I forgot to share my fun psychology fact! I saw an interview with Marsha Linehan where she said that she developed DBT specifically to treat people who were chronically suicidal. But since treatment research requires you to be treating a specific diagnosis and “chronically suicidal” isn’t a diagnosis, she chose Borderline Personality Disorder as the diagnosis, since it’s the one that most commonly manifests in treatment-resistant, chronic suicidality that results in repeated hospitalizations.

31:50 shout out byung chul han and his terminology. Obsessed with his works but it is so hard to get through as a certified stupid person

Gemma Schultz

Regarding BPD/autism: I had a similar experience with my mental health and ended up getting diagnosed with autism last year, I highly recommend Dr Devon Price’s book Unmasking Autism - it talks specifically about the intersectionality between autism and other minority groups and how it can get misperceived/the stigma can be compounded. My life honestly changed after reading that book because I had a new lens to view my experience, just like the terminology of sexual assault. I also have the experience of viewing everyone else through the lens of autism so when Olivia asked about autism I cackled because I was wondering the same about both of you (said with the most love possible, no judgement or armchair diagnosing intended!)

Iwakura

i can sense you getting more drunk over the course of this

I think a lot about how "deserving" is more concept than anything and that's helped me figure out why I hate being told I deserve this or that and I try not to tell others what I think they "deserve". The idea of "deserving concepts" is now tying my thoughts in a silly knot!
