Spencer (He/him) asked a great question in the last Zoom Town Hall comparing Martin Buber's I and Thou to William James's Pragmatism. I garbled my answer a bit on the livestream so I took it as a challenge to make it much more clear in this Social No Para.

I'm so grateful that this conversation of pragmatism resulted in a discussion of what we DO with this information. I sincerely believe that we as a world NEED to discuss high status. Why are teachers paid less than stockbrokers, and how do we build a world where we all praise/reward the people who feed and shelter the homeless or clean the rivers and oceans. I love swing dancing as a positive activity that produces beneficial byproducts like health, friendships, community and confidence. But don't stop at one! There are hundreds of activities that create beneficial byproducts, and I believe we should all endeavor to participate in as many as possible: Sing, dance, garden, clean, celebrate, share and learn. Much love and appreciation for your time and thoughts!

This was a great conversation, thank you for sharing! It's making me want to read Buber, his stuff seems interesting.

I think I get what you mean with doing the thing for it's own sake! Doing the thing for it's own sake could be seen as a side quest that isn't related to your main goals/quest. Doing something with the intend to not make it part of "the main Quest". To build upon the friendship example, for a case that would be tied to: A main quest. A "friendship" purely for political reasons, while you don't like that person. You don't do it for the sake of the friendship (side quest goal). But for the sake of the political advantages (main quest goal). An Hobby, Art project, task, ect (Could proberly name more if you guys want to) Could also end up as an side quest for it's own sake. This Exsplanation also works for "doing the thing for it's self". Because I think it is the same idea, just put differently. If you have questions about it feel free to ask! Also, CJ. You forgot too put that social no para video with Ben in the social no para playlist. Could you add that one to it now, for our sake?
