NGL, I'm definitely on the side of life first, art second. I guess that's not a specifically surprising position, but let me try and say my piece. Worship it if you want, but at the end of the day, art should be a support system for life, not the other way around. I would rather all those depressed poets who wrote all that beautiful shit and died miserable had processed their emotions, lived happier lives. And if that meant they didn't write a damn thing, and the world's poorer for it, fine. That's the cost of doing business, and I don't mind saying that cold as goddamn ice. People matter more. That's just the fucking end of it. Art can't fucking suffer. You can. You think the Mona Lisa gives a shit if you throw paint on her? No. You do. You can say that 'moment exists between you and the piece' but, from another perspective, that moment also exists, solely, in the neurons between your ears. The waves between you and the piece are just photons. In basic, physical reality, it's still you. You're just being weird about it. Maybe we can't perfectly track or analyze the ripples a happy, compassionate, responsible life makes in the universe. But I goddamn guarantee, if you live fully and broadly, not to make art but simply to live, and make art for that purpose, rather than the other way around, living broadly and fully to make some beautiful art, the aggregate of all those ripples will be stronger. CJ the X worships art as God within. I respect that. But God's more than that. God is LIFE within. God didn't breathe into Adam so he could paint Him shit. He breathed in Adam so he. could. fucking. live. All the fucker had to do was eat whatever the hell fruit he wanted minus one, "And it was good." It was good! It was good to just sit around, fuck his wife and eat fruit and name animals whatever dumb shit he came up with. God didn't say make the names pretty. He said name them, period, meaning whatever the hell you want. And there's some art you could put into all of it. But the point is that you do it, clumsily or beautifully, and enjoy it for fuck's sake. So fucking live, dammit. And don't let whatever self-loathing from whatever shit life's shit on you--we're all gay and traumatized in 2024, so i hear you--hide in whatever excuses you make for putting your art before your life. I don't buy them. God doesn't either.

Am I main character? Yes. But of some shitty ya novel with too many dropped story threads to ever be taken seriously. And that's ok

how did a video about the kronk movie i used to watch at 7 make legit question my life my reason: because I love comedy and art and writing, when I'm kickstarted it all just is easy. my contract (why do you REALLY make things): because I'm scared i wasted my life at 23 and if i don't do something i am bothering everyone else or don't deserve any of the privilege and nice treatment i have gotten

Banshee1

My contract is that if I am capable of making beautiful things I might be seen as beautiful My reason is pretty thing look good make stomach go ahhh

I wonder if the ending lines of thought about people serving the creation of good art (~21:44) are at risk of being perverted - someone else turning around and telling you that "the art is best served with you in this role," as oppressed peoples have been told in history that "your oppression is justified because it serves [some good]. Hence creative burnout and self-destructive behavior in artists who value their art more than they value their own health, etc. Instead of "art is its own end," is it better to say "human goodness and flourishing is its own end"? And to shy away from practices which would make objects and instruments of people. Or are those two statements dialectical poles in themselves? Or am I a big nerd?

this is a great complex question and a common critique of "objective excellence" in art and life, if people use that value system they tend to consider existing patterns of value self justifying and there is a danger of elitism and bigotry as to who can or should make art. I believe subjectivity is our tool to work against static patterns, reinventing our definition of quality and excellence in perpetuity, or rather expanding the definition. There's a very interesting conflict between socialist and capitalist philosophies applied to Art. Although socialists and Adorno hate mass media and art created by wide appeal and capital accumulation by soulless appeal to the lowest common denominator, that's actually kind of the socialist solution? That's the "most general satisfaction for the most amount of people". Versus a more hyper individualistic stance of making art for EXCELLENCE and QUALITY at the risk of excluding people or dehumanizing people in the process. So: I think that authentic excellence and quality and beauty etc. accounts for subjectivity and the well being of people. If your conception of quality does not allow for originality or reinvention or transgression and experimentation and a variety of perspectives, THAT IS NOT QUALITY. That is people in power trying to define quality by referring to dead, static past. Quality, excellence, art, God, is always ahead of us, always growing, always expanding. A variety of perspectives and the liberty/actualization of as many people as possible is necessary for real excellence, not the elitist exclusionary sect of the century. The summation of my belief is that Moral Quality and Aesthetic Quality may ultimately be one and the same, although i allow for case by case contradiction.

This was a helpful construction I think! I realize that deep down why I make things is that I want a sense of community and to make friends. I write fanfiction and it’s cool when people agree with my interpretations but most of all I remember like to feel part of the community. My more higher thinking goal is definitely to add more queerness to the world haha

Man this is a punch in the gut to me but a good one. I recently dropped out of college to pursue an artistic career. Im Mexican and there’s very little opportunity for artists here but I took the leap of faith anyways. I’ve been reading this book called “the practice” and it talks about al lot of the same things you do but with less abstract concepts. It is a call to action for creatives, it tells you how humanity needs you, we need art from everybody, we need people to have faith In themselves. I think that to have faith in you is to have faith in God, for God is everything and so it is also you. I don’t like to acknowledge my contract. It’s hard and is an object of shame for me. But Thanks yo you I will start asking myself, what is it, what do I want. In a petersonian way (shadow what the hell are you talking about) to embrace my shadow. Thanks CJ, you’re always an inspiration :)

do u have adhd tho

The Practice seem breezy and simple in a good way, as does Seth Godin's writing/talking in general. I think I'll buy it and "This Is Marketing" to ingest on the side. Thanks for the rec!

This was so good. Thank you, as always! It brought me back to my decision to quit yoga teacher training last year. I remember I was hashtag hustling, trying to “build my brand,” trying to succeed at capitalism while also trying to maintain integrity and authenticity into a practice that was deeply spiritual and sacred to me. I was reading a chapter of a book on Yoga about whiteness & capitalism, and I just realized how my desire to become a certified yoga teacher & teach yoga was rooted in fears around financial security and capitalism’s push that enjoyment of something needs to be monetized. It ruined my actual passion for yoga & my connection to the 8-limbed path and I realized despite my convictions to never charge for yoga, and to focus on accessible yoga for fellow fat folks, I still was attempting to do something that was antithetical to my values surrounding capitalism and cultural appropriation. Finding out my “true reason” made me realize I needed to make a major change. Now my yoga practice is mine - it’s not for consumption and it’s not for sale.

I found this video so interesting. At this point, I don't feel like my deepest fear when creating is about my self-worth or other people's views of me; it's much more closely tied to my identity. I'm scared that if I stop making art, if I stop Being An Artist, then I will lose something fundamental about who I am. Is it possible to have an unhealthy parasocial relationship with your own self-image?

Organ

Thanks for your reply! It'd be cool if moral quality and aesthetic quality are a false dichotomy. There's a funny question in the Zhuangzi - is saying that someone is "good" at something, like being a thief, the same "good" as saying that someone is a "good" person? I'm interested in the questions you've posed in the book club with regard to quality as well and will hopefully be thinking alongside about that.

Some Goon

I woke up in a foggy mood this morning so I went to watch this because your videos are always comforting to me. This was no exception, and was absolutely a message I needed to hear today. I am a creative and I have been feeling antsy about making something new lately, and this was eerily on the nose for what I needed to think about today. I don’t know you as a person but I feel very lucky to have your art. Thank you.

Thank you for being my favorite side character & deeply enriching my life ❤︎ I resonate with everything you said, as a DBT graduate especially the calling out of dialectics for not coming back to the unifying summation instead of splitting the difference and calling it truth (if I understood your point correctly lol.). Any chance of CJ merch? I need a shirt that says “why do you create? Why do you REALLY create?”

CJ The X

I have some strong convictions about merch, essentially it means you're encroaching into the medium of Fashion, which I refuse to do half heartedly with short cuts, I don't wanna make pins and stickers that people buy bc they're fans but have no aesthetic use value, nor T shirts with a one step print on them the quality of which I can't guarantee. When I do merch I want it to be some decent fashion that I can stand by that someone might wear and that i would as well. But I keep in mind the phrases I would want to wear. We Are On The Side of Art and Why Do You Make Things are good contenders (not random funny lines that people recognize but thing sthat maybe mean things)

Lux ❤︎

totally appreciate that approach, thank you for sharing! (Meant sincerely not patronizingly, I genuinely admire your convictions & commitment to acting on them.)
