I've been a fan of hers for a long time and I think it's charming that she doesn't seem to believe that "Jenny Nicholson content" is a genre unto itself with an even bigger draw than most of her topics. Every content maker that I think is smart and funny holds her up as the gold standard. The media landscape would be a lot sharper if people actually would hire her as a script doctor/brand consultant.

This is a great conversation that left me a little disturbed. Just now, as a "what's my first youtube video about?" thought experiment, I tried to make a list of things I'm good at and/or topics that I have something substantial to contribute to. I came up blank. I narrowed my scope to "what do I like and can talk about with confidence" and could only conjure sensory notes. Nothing more complex than aesthetics and sounds and food textures I enjoy. This is likely a chronic-disordered-thoughts-under-pressure issue and nothing to beat myself up over, but I'm not happy about it. I swear I used to have opinions and ideas and hobbies that mattered to me. What happened.

FWIW some of my favorite videos you make are from silly topics like RZAs worst beat or Top 10 Types of Water. Sometimes it's just fun to hear intense passion for what you'd think is a banal topic with a chaotic and mildly unhinged comedic backbone.

The notion of making a fun little event or 'ritual' around the process of consuming something to create content about is such an awesome idea. I've really loved the book club on here and Jenny mentioning the tea party thing combined with talking about adding value to Patreon makes me wonder if there could be some way to combine those. 'Livestream novelty watch party' super doesn't feel like your type of 'vibe' and would probably hurt retention of what you're watching anyway, but it definitely got me thinking about "what's a fun way to watch a hundred episodes of something that you're watching for work?" Also I love the concept of signal words every time you've mentioned it; it's such a cool concept and really makes one appreciate the value of presenting closer to one's most authentic self, getting the energy of things that are important to you transmitted back your way.

Huh, interesting to see the tax situation in different countries to mine. So much so that I went and checked what the Australian tax situation would be for youtubers. Lots of food for thought here about types of content creators and what inspires people to make things, as well as practical advice from both sides. Jenny is right that people do use videos for different types of activity - whether directly watching, dish doing, etc. There are even some people I follow because they have tolerable videos that are over long and slightly dull as 'background' noise for an activity. Otherwise as long as the person is not in my own area of expertise (that just makes me want to make my own videos and haha), and is really deeply passionate about their topic, I am onboard. Lock picking? Go for it! Furniture making? Good! Obsessed with an anime I will never watch but have a take? Bring it. Tis why I am here for both of you.

Very insightful and fun conversation, seeing these reflections at the moment I've decided to "start making video content" (as a side hobby to my career as a game developer) is very productive. My mind is swimming in a million directions about the idea of how far I may take creating video content on top of an existing job, and a lot of points made here are very grounding about what I should expect in that process. I love the part about multiple takes and editing, I just suffered that for a day for the first time and it was brutal, also felt immediately "I need to do fewer takes." Also you're both smart and charming, and coming directly off th Sarah Z discussion, I'm glad you guys were able to have such a good vibe in this discourse.

That was amazing! And as you've predicted I did go apeshit when I saw who was your guest for this. Two point I want to make: Given that your online persona is a bit like "I'm awesome and don't care what other people think", it was super cute seeing you talk to someone you overtly admire. Through your admiration I actually learned why I love Jennys videos so much. I could never really put my finger on it other than "They're fun and insightful". But your point about how her videos pretend to be about something but are actually about something else was a true revelation to me.

this is incorrect that was just the sun changing positions in real life in real time, was on the initial day though. i'll look for it so i can know the answer but i think it will be impossible to tell bc the sun was moving on the initial day too. maybe a sparkle is out of place. oh but idk i reapply makeup during shoots too
