A conversation with FD about Youtube, micro-celebrity, cancellation, accountability, and TWITTERRRRR BAD!!!#@&@#

This was a casual catch up call from back in February that I for some reason suspected wasn’t worthy of uploading, but in retrospect is fun and relevant.

Random aside about hip hop as per usual.

The videos by him and Mia Cole that we discuss are:

Leftist infighting almost killed me (Broke Bread) https://youtu.be/vQQXH1AN22M

The Dichotomy of Youtube & Art https://youtu.be/gzfz4QZQgZM

Some subjects are delicate when it comes to cancellation/accountability (even conceptually, definitely specifically), so do receive it as lightly and sincerely as we give it to each other.

The old ass Chromebook I use for TV isn't showing the video. I assume that's because it's hosted on patreon/using its player rather than YouTube? Anyone else had and resolved this problem?

Josh Milburn

YES, my two favorite YouTubers. It always makes me so happy seeing y'all chatting. ❤️

This was gold right in the middle of more infighting lol. I needed it

Can confirm that I absolutely rewatch/listen to CJ videos. Many times. When I really love something I play it into the ground.

i appreciated hearing you both talk about your craft and how you manage interactions with a wider public and perceived benefits to speaking to certain subjects

The Internet paradox: The greatest thing about the Internet is how the internet brings together like minded individuals. It allows us to find supportive communities that understand all of our weird personality and interests and self identities. The worst thing about the internet is how the internet brings together like minded individuals. Toxic minds coming together to egg each other on and breaking any moral firewalls. What do we do when the best and worst elements of the internet are the same damn thing?

I have a feeling that this is the last year we get of CJ video essays, I'm gonna make sure I enjoy it to the fullest

I have a technical question. My wife and I like to watch these on our TV, but it looks like this one is not hosted on YouTube so we can't do that. Is this how it's gonna be going forward?

💙 first time speaking up, but this video really resonated with me. Black anime artist online since 1999. I had big numbers back in 2007, but I got overwhelmed by a bunch of deaths in my family at once and took an extended hiatus. When I finally came back to the internet, the landscape changed so much I just said fuck it and decided to touch grass and look after my kid. I haven’t regretted it. When I watch your videos a fire lights up in me and I want to create on a mass scale again, I just don’t know where. As you correctly address, twitter is toxic and YouTube isn’t much better. Previously I was scratching the itch as a radio co host for a local station talking about mental health in the black community. I’m inspired by what you’ve accomplished, your authenticity and the dialogue you lay down. In that context and after watching this, my questions are ‘is being this visible in the modern online landscape worth it? Doesn’t the grind erode your mental health? Are you able to protect your peace and your privacy? And how much to you contribute to the support base at your back?’ Either way. Thank you for this video. I love you and FD’s work so much. I feel like y’all are making space for other creators in such a beautiful way.

I get that you wanna move away from YouTube, but the video player is just so good. Especially for long videos that don't get watched in one sitting. Please consider continuing to upload them to private YouTube instead of/ or in addition to this player. Thanks.

ik this is partially fuelled by parasociality but this discussion btn two of my favs is so important. It's interesting listening to the diverging approaches both FD and CJ have taken as it relates to audience interaction and branding. I also find these approaches fitting to the general vein of their respective work and can't wait to observe their evolution into these formats because both are sure to put out exciting meaningful projects as they've shown they can.

I think what we do is try to use it like any other tool. Possibly with more regulation like other tools that can cause harm. I firmly believe most angsty 14-22 year olds have the potential to grow out of it by 30.
