I won't spoil much as it will be explained later but sang yan is duan jiaxu's best friend and he also helps him a lot in his life. Jiaxu really considers sang zhi as a little sister, it is not until she is an adult does he start having feelings for her. So all the feelings right now are totally one sided. Him being nice and helping sang zhi this much is because she is his best friend's sister nothing else.

I know the gap might seem a lot bc of how young the girl looks when she first met jiaxu but they only have a 5 year age gap, sang zhi just looks really young. like the other comments said the romance doesn't start till later when she's older just to give y'all some piece of mind he doesn't have any feelings for her right now and only see's her as his best friends younger sister so he's just naturally nice to her for that reason. also for some age context from this episode, when they first meet she's in 8th grade(14) while he's in his first yr at university(19) I think, then when they meet again she's in grade 11(17) and he's going into his final yr at university(22) .

This show is actually PEAK romance. Also like the age gap is done sooo well, because who hasn’t had a crush on their elder siblings friends lol. It doesn’t mean them being kind to you, that they reciprocated your feelings (if they were a decent human being). There are time jumps and he does not catch feelings until she’s an adult and i don’t want to spoil you, but i really enjoy how they handle his feelings. When she’s younger she’s ACTUALLY like a sister to him, like beyond even a random friend’s kid sister because Sang Yan and Sang Zhi are precious people in his life. It’d be weird to suddenly see someone you consider your little sister as a romantic prospect if it’s not handled delicately. By handled delicately, the writers genuinely want to show two people falling in love and not some weird age-gap fetish (which i feel like a lot of shows with an age gap fall into). I genuinely have never NEVER been so obsessed with a romance in my life like this show and we would not recommend you something problematic (it likely wouldn’t have won the polls)

as far as I know in china kids usually don't wear make up at school or at least minimum of it, and plus if it's a flashback in the show then it means it's at least 2015 there so of course kids nowadays usually looking older than their age but back then it was not like that, and still even now there's kids that can look younger than their age, it's not working only in one direction. In conclusion some ppl may look older than their age when others will look younger
