As far as why Ned brought Arya along, he originally planned to bring all the kids except Robb (the oldest, who had to stay in Winterfell bc he was heir) and Rickon (the youngest, who was too young to be separated from his mother). So, he originally wanted to bring Sansa (the redhead), Arya, and Bran (the one who fell).
