You guys probably wouldn't hate the love dynamic quite as much if they weren't related (I say as much, because I can't recall a romantic aspect of any animated series so far that you've enjoyed, lol)... but you should keep in mind, that in their culture, cousins marrying wasn't as cringe as it is in western culture.
