Hello everyone!

So, if you didn't know already, I used a Discord server to comminicate day to day with patrons, post previews, and generally connect with my players.

But, that will change. In March, Discord will ask users to upload an ID to access adult servers. Like mine, of course.

It's not acceptable for me. Especially with how they do it. They use a company with links to palantir, and Peter thiel. And they already exposed 70.000 user's id pictures in September.

So, I am going to move my message board elsewhere. But I want your opinion. I am gonna be honest: I favor hosting my own forum. But, if I do the work and pay the host to have only 5 users that are interested it's not worth it.

Hence that poll: Are you interested in a self-hosted forum ir would you prefer another solution?

I saw something else saying they went back on the ID requirement but im not super sure, a back plan sounds good though. I dont know what else to use though lol

I don't think continuing with platforms like Discord or Telegram or similar is productive or safe... an old-school forum could be right for us, but the variables could be too many, not to mention the constant presence of AI in operating systems, browsers and so on... I'm too old for this shit

An old school forum is a pain to maintain. Don't ask me how I know. There is a new Teamspeak 5 that kinda does what discord does, but self hosted (on a server)... Maybe that's something to look into?

I will use whatever you decide to use. But I do agree that maybe instead of spending a lot of time and money one your own forum, it might be worth a look at other platforms that are already available to the masses. Maybe we can find one that is similar to Discord, and maybe just needs a few hundred thousand AVN lovers to go to it to aid its development, maybe that's the way to go.

I need to think about it. Tho I do think that the situation is getting bad. While I can agree with a sort of age verification for kids, having that done by companies with such ties is extremely concerning.

Teampspeak is awful with text chat, which is why i used discord. And with teamspeak, you need to join an audio channel to have access to the text, it's bothersome and not what I need, sadly.

Heh, I had forums in the past, and I didn't find it challenging to maintain. What did you have problem with? Teamspeak is not good with text I found, sadly.

I would love to find something, but I searched and nothing really replace the text function of discord. And a forum I can contro leverything, which I prefer. And it's what? 6€ a month? No big deal.

I do not think what discord is doing is the end of the world. If they are going to automatically maintain access for a lot of users as they say without having to post age id, then you may alienate those users who prefer discord. I belong to non-nsfw servers, so i won't be leaving discord ... but will evaluate my membership in nsfw servers if and when the time comes.

I may alienate some users. In fact, I will. Some will not make the jump. On the other hand, other will not continue to use discord, so... I am not comfortable contin uing to use discord myself, though, so I am going to change for sure.

In the end it is a matter of control. Using your own Forum is the only "easy" way of keeping control to yourself and not being bound to Terms of any other service provider. Maybe i am not represenatative here, but i am one of the older Intenet users and remember using forums all the time in the "old ages" - i even remember ICQ ;) - So i guess a Forum is not the end of the World. And keeping control to yourself is more important than ever nowadays when the EU pursues censorship and bog tech are doing whatever they please no matter the collateral damage. As usual i am in favor of doing your own thing. Be who you are and don't let anyone other tell you that you shouldn't. - this is exactly one of these cases. Stand your ground. Don't let them push you around - rather do ypur own thing. Fuck discord.

Thanks, Vander, for the conversion. I've learned stuff, though without great clarity. For example, in the third option above, you seem to suggest a linkage between Patreon and Discord - is that correct?

Regardless - I share your privacy concerns. The other concern is expedience and convenience - I wouldn't want to consume scarce resources. But I'll let you be the judge of that. You raise another concern below, loss of some subscribers during transition. You obviously need to weigh that in the balance as well. Is the environment for AVNs just becoming that much more difficult? FYI, as one data point, I'd pay more if that's the only to keep FS afloat.

^This! And also, you are better off with Mumble as an Alternative anyway for many years by now: It is Open Source, very well tested and you do not need to pay a License Fee if you want to run your own TeamSpeak Server.

I voted for "another Platform" as I have so many Accounts these Days, it is not even funny anymore. I will wait as well, how the Discord Problem develops, as I will keep using it with other Channels which do not have "18+/21+/23+" content. Unless they move on too. Forum vs Discourse: Well, Discourse is annoying to use IMHO for one big reason: If you open a Topic, it will always automatically scroll down to the latest post - never the first. So you usually have to scroll up to see the initial post. Therefore I think, some old school OpenSource Forum Software would work better and will be less annoying for the People joining your potential Forum. That being said: Not sure if I am willing to create another Account somewhere. At least not anytime soon. Who knows. Well keep up the great work. #StaySafeStayHealthyEveryone :)

It's tough, huh? An old school forum (imho) has a cozy and nostalgic aesthetic and feel. Any open dialogue will have users refreshing pages to check for responses though. Unless there are scripts or resources to add a live chat to an original forum post. I'm not html savvy nor super well traveled as forums go so I wouldn't know but that would be a cool way to emulate discord's feel.

Yeah, looking into it,n an old school forum will be difficult for me to maintain and use...I probably will switch to another app like stoat. We'll see, I am still looking into it.

As I am of legal age, age verification as such is not frightening me. I lately had to do it on SS. And it is legally obligated in the EU. But I am concerned about privacy protection. There are age verification systems that do not require the vendor to have a copy of my ID, like german PostIdent. I will never send my ID to anywhere. If Discord won't provide a data minimalistic way of age verification, I will be off. Bummer. Then, Patreon has to suffice.
