Hello everyone.

I created this poll because, with the increasing size of The Fiery Scion, I will sooner or later have to do something about it.

Since you are the people who support the creation of the VN, I think it's normal to ask for your opinion first.

Now, I thought of several ways of dealing with it:

-Compressing the images even more. Easy for me to do. Of course, the images will have more grain, a few artifacts, and will be blurrier. On the other hand, the graphics of The Fiery Scion are not the best in the first place so it will not be an enormous loss. But as the VN expand, the quality could drop significantly.

-Making two versions: A compressed and a regular. More work for me, which means less time to work on the updates. But still a reasonable workload.   And people with bad internet can chose the regular, the others can have a lighter download.

-Cutting up the VN in parts. Different games, that share the same saves.

It should be easy to do, with emphasis on "should", but there's a possibility that the first version will have some bugs. It's more cumbersome, but the advantage is that you can have a smaller file size when the new version comes out without reducing the quality. The downside is that it is more work for me and that you will have to save at a precise location of the save will bug. This means that some players will not do it and I will have to do support for them, which means, again, less time for the development of the VN.

Now, I still have some time before I have to take a decision. And I want to be clear: I make this poll to have an idea of what you want, but I reserve the right to not follow the poll results. I probably will, but if for example cutting up parts of the VN ends up too complex, I will perhaps abandon the idea.

Thank you very much for your feedback, and as always, I wish you a fantastic day!

To be clear i do care, I just care the you do whats easiest/less stress for you. Love what you've been putting out and hope you do whats best for you.

Spiderfox

Update patches that we put into the older versions game folder to get the new stuff.

Vander

Thank you very muck Jack, it is very nice of you to say.

Vander

The problem with patches is that I still need the complete version of the game for the new players, and a lot of them cannot download over 5Gb a day. So it's problematic. So it's not a solution but I will take it under consideration for the rest of the players.

Spiderfox

Yeah I agree with you. Every game I play that is has patches also has the option to download the entire game as well. Lot of work for you. Do what is easiest for you, just thought I would throw the suggestion out there

Brandon Joseph

I am ok with anything as long as it means no big headache for you. PS. keep up the amazing work and remember to have fun aswell

Mr Santos

I agree with Spiderfox, having only the update patch as option

I'm open to anything that makes it easier for you. The 5GB limit is a thing, but there are also very popular huge games that vastly exceed it (HH being ~10GB these days, for instance). There are a lot of ways to work around it (VPN being the most obvious). Another option is to start using additional upload hosts besides Mega. GoFile is another good option for the initial release, since they have no limits at all, but links there vanish if they go a full 10 days with no one downloading. I believe there are multi-upload services that can upload to a few different hosts in one go that might make things easier for you to do that. For me personally, I don't mind huge games. I also don't mind separate "Chapters" or parts, provided the save transitioning is smooth. There are a few games where the Part 2 can pick up variables from the persistent saves from Part 1, so perhaps looking into how they handle that could be useful. I can't really weigh in on compressed versions, since I never use them. EDIT: Also wanted to add that the way you handle your script files should make update patches VERY easy to deal with, since you've got every day in a separate file.

Vander

Yes, like I said, the parts would share the same saves, in the same folder. You would have to save at a certain point, that point being clearly marked, then next update you'll have just to load that save in the next part of the game.

Several games eventually have this issue, my favorite solution was done on the game Rebirth. Splitting the game into Episodes/Chapters at a certain size, Save progress, choices, etc at end of episode, start next episode loads all progress from previous episode and we are on our way. might be even easier for TFS since its more Kinetic Novel, few choices.

Vander

Yes, rebirth is a good example. No, the number of variables don't really change anything, you charge the whole save. It's probably what I am going to do in the end.

I agree with this, the ones that split into chapters seem to work the best because you have a "completed" chapter and then you save to import into the next chapter helps keep the sizes smaller which means less redownloading everything you already have like when you do .3 then .4 you just redownloaded all of .3 again. Some even go as far as making it one big game but allowing you to download just the "updated" components into updates that is the best way I have seen. You simply make each update downloads separately but it's just update1 update2 and so on but you have to have 1 to use 2 and must have 1 and 2 to have 3. so a new person would have to download multiple but it's not that difficult after 3 is created to simply combine 1&2 into 1 download and 3 on it's own
