Belated Ranma Poll Response August2025 (Patreon)

Three days (well, okay, two full days but still) after I had hoped to close this poll down.  Sorrow.  But Bhaalson Remodel is done, formatted, name-changed, and off to the editor. 

I will have to get this work out every day to Hiryo (SORRY) in order for him to look it over if Journey wins, but I think I can get at least half the chapter I wanted out?  We will see.  I can cut down on the travel-type shenanigans if… but I am getting ahead of myself. 

So, let us formally see which of the Ranma fics won this month’s poll…

Cool.  I will get to work on that right away.  If I hear back from the editor he can’t look over Bhaalson Remodel in time, I will be posting it at that point. 

In other news, a few questions: What was everyone’s opinion on the pictures?  Should I try to include more of them in my works here going forward?  I can probably try some free AI art generator thing.  Still have no idea how to add pictures over on A03, alas.

And as a second question, what do you think of the name Journey Gone Astray for the Ranma/DC cross?  I’m curious.  I think it made sense before, but going forward, I’m not certain if that works as a title for the whole fic.

I like the title, but it's not as though I'm attached to the point where I solely identify it with the fic. If you can think of a better and more fitting title, go for it. It is *your* fic after all.

about the pictures, i generally stand against using AI for art.

i like seeing pictures because it gives a good idea of what you want to portray the character as, as opposed to what others might have been thinking, or how they might have been in cannon, depending on changed made.

Both the pitures and the story name are fine.

You embed the images using HTML in Ao3 using an image hosting site like imgur (they even have a convenient button to copy the embed code iIrc), but they (Ao3) are a bit finicky about what they allow in terms of "ownership" of the image and Idk how that's moderated. With AI generations that's less of an issue, but I know there's lots of people out there that are very against using it at all.

... hmm... for Death's Avenger, that would be interesting in Terms of Harry... Chimera Harry is a very different character physically speaking. Same with Bhaalson Harry, obviously. Good point about pictures being a good way to show the changes.

Pout. Even for someone like me, who has no ability with pictures? I give voice to my imagination through words, not images.

the problem is the sourcing. if the AI was truly 'generating' from nothing i would be fine with it, but instead AI art programs basically just steal from other peoples genuine art, so i'm morally opposed to it. i can understand why using a free program is more desirable than commissioning an artist for a drawing, but i mostly view it as being similar to pirating a video game or a movie instead of paying for it. also, i'm pretty detail oriented with art, and the inaccuracies and errors with AI art genuinely makes it look 'off/disturbing' to me when i notice them. overall, if you want to do it occasionally to help give a visual example of something you are writing about, go ahead, you're not selling the art or claiming that you created it, since you're declaring it's AI art, and it's not going to change my enjoyment of your stories, i'm just personally opposed to the usage of AI for artistic purposes. i mean, just the other day i was looking through some fanfiction and found a story that the 'author' was saying was made by or with chatGPT, and i absolutely wouldn't ever give that story the time of day. i hope i've been able to explain my opinion, i'm not upset at YOU, just at AI art in general.

Pictures are fine. The title is fine too. But if you want suggestions for changing it. The only other titles I could think to suggest are "The male amazon" or "Amazon 1/2"

Agreed, AI 'art' is a growing trend on AO3 and it just seems like a waste. You can already paint is a portrait with your words, Vimes, if you want to add art maybe ask your community like you did for fic coverart? I have no artistic talent myself, but I bet there are artists out there that would love to get their art (and probably links to their other works) added into chapters.

Heya Vim, on the matter oft he ‚2‘ days, really 9.9 again not much time especially for this mega fanfic. XD It will be surely challenging and extremely hard for me to manage that. On the matter of halving the chapter, I disagree since that is the only Ranma story we got this month! On the matter of picture, I definitely want the main characters pictures to have a better picture which version of character you want to use or get a feel of your strangeness creature/person/… Here on reddit is some time and some formatting tips linked further down. reddit – How do I insert a photo into chapters: https://www.reddit.com/r/AO3/comments/15r1yke/how_do_i_insert_a_photos_into_chapters/ Here another more complete tag for the image links https://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_img.asp Keep in mind you don’t need to use “alt” or “width” or “height”, however, for ‘ownership’ reason or simple to add a name for the picture, when you hover the mouse over the picture, use the “alt” option. ;) On the matter on AI, many prefer if there is some hand in the AI instead of just AI, though for me to get the point across of how the character should look, it’s easier to have a comparison. Definitely you’d have to add “alt in the image source tag <img src="”URL”" alt="”AI:"> On the matter of title, I like the title, however, Ranma would have to regular stray from the intended path and thus make sense of this title. Could become of an inside joke to up and up the strayness. “Mustang of the West” wouldn’t exclude the Amazon Island and similar Journeys on Earth too?

I like journey gone astray. It shows that Ranma's path and original journey (aka) Destiny has quite literally 'gone astray'. He/She has been to Paradise Island, interacted with meta humans, god's, demi-gods and aliens. The current name reflects that perfectly.

After getting the chapter, I re-read your older mails and saw that "A Journey Gone Astray" was the name of the first arc of this story. This made me think of some more titles. Maybe naming the story (not all titles may fit): -) “Kismet Meeting Butterfly”, -) “Happenstance Ranma”, -) “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Ranma”, -) “How to Stop the Other Shoe from Dropping”, -) “I Want to Be a Hero Not a Harem Protagonist”, -) “All My Girfriends Are Stronger than Me”, -) “The Pinkies of My Girlfriends” Let's see which of these titles is more in line with your audience. ^^
