Hello everyone, I've got some news. Some good, some bad. The tl;dr is at the bottom, but it'd be lovely if you read everything.

First things first, I'm ditching Twitter for BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/germanpeter.bsky.social
I'll stop posting on Twitter by the end of the week, so follow me there. Not gonna miss that hellhole.

Secondly, I have been cooking up several video ideas. Some scripts are already being worked on, and there's even some things that are going to take a bit more time to prepare first, but we'll get there. I'm sure you'll like them.

However, Youtube is incredibly frustrating for me at the moment. Despite all the work I've put into my channel for the past year and a half, it feels like I'm getting nowhere. Some videos (Doom, Wolfenstein, Half-Life) have been doing well, while anything else hasn't. I'd love to branch out and talk about other topics. Unfortunately, each time I do, they barely get any views and reminds me I could have spent that time and effort elsewhere.

Support on your end has been nothing but exceptional, so I'm putting the blame more on Youtube. What probably doesn't help is that videos are rarer and shorter now, which the algorithm definitely isn't a fan of. If you don't churn out "content" all the time, it just ignores you. But if I did that, I'd burn out. HARD.

I just don't know what to do about this. I was hoping to be able to comfortably live off of making videos full-time, but I just can't see that happening. I will continue pouring my heart and soul into my videos, and quality will NOT drop, rest assured. I just have no idea what the future of this channel even is anymore. I mean, if working hard hasn't helped, what will?

And the final and most unfortunate news is that yesterday, my father passed away. Therefore, I'm going to need to take some time off to take care of a few things, as well as look after myself. This means that Youtube is getting put on a bit of a hold for now.

How long this break will last, I can't say. I might release some videos here and there (because it helps me distract myself), but not as often as before. I'll absolutely let you know once things are returning to normal, though.

If you're still hungry for new topics, you could check if there's some videos of mine you haven't watched yet.

And that's pretty much it. Yeah, not a great end to this year for me, but I'll be fine. Like with many of my problems lately, the only thing to do is wait, and that I shall do. I hope you can wait alongside me, and that once I return, you're still there for me. Thank you for all of your support so far, it means the universe to me.

I wish you happy holidays and a good slide into the next year, as the Germans say.

I'll see you there.

tl;dr: I'm leaving Twitter for BlueSky, have planned new videos, I'm unsure about my channel's future, and my father died. Going to go on a little break for the near future.

Dang - so sorry to hear of your father's passing... :( My condolences.

First and foremost, My condolences. Thought to you and your family. It really isn't happening at the ideal moment, but life is such sometimes. Secondly, to tackle Youtube poor practices, have you thought of diverging onto other platforms? I especially thought of nebula.tv which has a couple of Video-game essayist creators on there, such as LowSpecGamer, Razbuten and Game Maker's Toolkit to only site those similar. You won't surely get more views (albeit, perhaps I'm underestimating it) but the plaform being a paid one, managed by the creators on it, you seems to get paid decently by watch-time, AND allow you to still keep uploading on YouTube and elsewhere (Same goes for the Nebula Plus bonus videos which can still be uploaded to supporters on Patreon or Youtube for example), it ain't an exclusivity deal. I do think you would fit ideally there and will allow you to perhaps rely less on Youtube, but I think creators on there are accepted on BY the creators already there. (I think i can offer Nebula guest passes if you won't to see what it is, so, I'm freely able to share it to you if you want in private messages) I also thought of other platforms, which it still good for discovery sake, even if just being an "official mirror of the YouTube channel". Places like Vimeo, Daylimotion and PeerTube that i can think of. To finish, It is entirely fine for you to take a break. It is perhaps, even expected that your favorites creators take breaks. Especially due to the exposed reasons.

my condolences, especially towards your loss.. do whatever makes you feel best. not planning in cutting my support. have a pleasant new year and beyond

GermanPeter

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, branching out wouldn't work. Youtube has the monopoly on video distribution. Sure, things like Vimeo and Nebula exist, but they're nowhere near as popular. I don't know a single person that actively uses them, anyway.

GermanPeter

However, I'll consider Nebula for the future. I guess posting my videos twice couldn't hurt. Thank you for the suggestion, and again thanks for your support.

I'm really sorry about your father, Peter. Take as much time as you need to take care of yourself; we'll be here for you whenever you're ready to start back up.
