The first episode is set in 2013, aligning with both its real-world premiere on September 24, 2013 and the MCU timeline after the events of The Avengers and Iron Man 3. From the beginning of this episode, the cause of the explosion was the deceased man wearing the Centipede device, which exploded due to Extremis, a reference to Iron Man 3. According to Simmons when she analyzed the Centipede device which is actually not a human bone, the Centipede device's serum combines multiple known sources of superhuman enhancement, including the Extremis virus, gamma radiation, a variation of the super-soldier serum, and Chitauri alien metal technology. Fitz is indeed Scottish and is played by the actor Iain De Caestecker who is a Scottish actor. The two fake police officers who tried to kill Mike and Skye were probably connected to the people behind the Centipede program. The woman Mike rescued from the burning building seems to have ties to that operation, and since Mike exposed the program, it makes sense that someone would want to silence him before he revealed more. Agent Ward mentioned that S.H.I.E.L.D. had told the police to hold their fire, and Agent May had to stop the fake officer from shooting Skye, which saved her life. At the end, the Night-Night Gun, created by Fitz and Simmons using a special formula saved Mike's life by stabilizing the unstable Extremis-infused Centipede serum.

Funny story. I went to Chiang Mai Thailand in 2015 and was sitting in a place called the Yellow Bar which is like a food court for bars with picnic tables for common seating and I was watching Agents of SHIELD season 3 on my laptop with my headset on when there was a tap on my shoulder. I turned to see a young Thai woman and she asked if that was Agents of SHIELD and then three more women at my table and the adjacent table looked at me. Turns out AoS is very popular among women in Asia because it has two main characters that are of Chinese heritage (May and Skye) Season 3 hadn't come out in Thailand yet, so we ended up at a tea house owned by one of the women there with about a dozen people watching it on a big screen TV hooked up to my laptop. For the same reasons AoS did not do well in the U.S., it did very well in other parts of the world. Hence why it was able to go 7 seasons.
