I finally finished recording this...It's not as 'put-together' as I would have liked but I hope you can listen and relax regardless. Would love to hear your thoughts and if you'd like more of this in future.

Hi, Aura! Need advice -- I haven't seen Donnie Darko, but it's available through my Netflix subscription. The question is, should I watch the film and then listen to the commentary or vice versa? (I don't particularly care about "spoilers" -- I just want to know the best way to appreciate your commentary.) (Have to keep our priorities straight here: who's more important, some critically-acclaimed, star-studded apparently under-appreciated movie or you? Why, YOU, of course!)

OK, here goes. First, please let me say that I really like the idea of your sort of documenting/reviewing films you like. And in this case, it was really helpful because I admit -- I don't get it. Parenthetically, I started out to tell you why -- or rather, how, maybe? -- but then I realized something about critics. They write caustic reviews because they didn't "get" the film; they're secretly mad because someone else understanding it when they don't is an insult. Let's face it SOMEBODY got the film, Mr. Canby, or it wouldn't have gotten produced in the first place. So my response here (which I have tried to de-kvetch) should actually be taken as a kind of praise -- I've been a film fan for a LONG time, and as a result, just like indoor temperature at this point, I have a narrow comfort zone. And Donnie Darko was a little too cool for me. I asked you about Alice in Wonderland because Darko seemed similar. To this DAY I'm still not sure what Alice in Wonderland is about, aside from a bunch of fantastic happenings strung together. The Wizard of Oz is a giant pile of fantasy too, but, there's a story line right there, in your face, from the beginning of the picture straight through to the last scene. With apologies to Oblio, I didn't see The Point, so Donnie came across like a strangely disaffected sitcom. Heck, even the Fantasy Rabbit was a guy in a rabbit suit (Yes, I used "rabbit suit" intentionally. The essence of the problem with not getting it is, there are no bunny costumes, only men in rabbit suits.) And when I say "disaffected", I mean it with a nod to the psychological idea of "affect". The characters themselves had some sort of emotionless quality about them. Not cardboard-y or even fantasy-y but -- well, I don' know, but it's not the first time I've seen that. They shot part of the Coen Brothers' Burn Before Reading or Burn While Reading or whatever the title of that was in our neighborhood, so we went to see it. And I had the same reaction to that. I think my problem was that was the entire cast was composed of horribly isolated characters, each thinking they're interacting with others but actually only referencing the space immediately surrounding them. Does that make sense? In that movie I really couldn't think of any reason to care about any of those terminally self-absorbed people, so when a series of odd/bad things happened to them, I was actually annoyed because I couldn't figure out what I was missing. And I never had a clue that Donnie was supposed to be saving the world, sorry. So I applaud you for your insight and descriptive skills and PLEASE do another film. In fact, at some point, I have a couple in mind that I would like your take on. And also, come to think of it, I'd also love to hear your thoughts about the VISUAL artistry of film. Especially since you are actually a voice artist yourself, relying almost entirely on sound and literally shunning the visual aspect of your chosen métier (He didn't actually say "métier" did he? What a snot!) Anyway, apologies if I sounded harsh -- I'm old and there are kids on my lawn. Keep up the great work!
