Commenting again to say this is REALLY dangerous. Trout is already going down a dark path, one she's desperately convincing herself is the only way. If Skua is willing to basically be her yes-man, no matter what she does, she'll have validation during her moments of doubt and will keep getting worse because he'll be reassuring her that she can do no wrong. Remember: Skua went along with the lie that it was a Daisy who attacked Trout. He said nothing when she said that Wahoo would have to serve the Tide, and Wahoo is a friend he's known for years. Tusk might have been important to Hake, but she was likely "just a Daisy" to Skua, especially compared to his Queen. Trout only has a few cats she trusts, and she's steadily losing them. She ruined her relationship with Hake. Kelp left the Family to be with Hake. All that's left is Sturgeon and Skua, and if Skua continues enabling her, Sturgeon might have less of a voice going forward. And once Trout finds out who called for the assassination...ho boy. There will be blood.

I think the power dynamic of Skua essentially being Trout’s squire really hurts their relationship. He’s been conditioned by the family and himself to be unquestionably loyal to Trout; support her, defend her, believe her. She is his superior and his religious leader. It’s fair to expect better of them, but he’s not the best person to be her voice of reason.

i interpreted "she was dead anyway" as meaning either 1. if she was exiled to the woods, she would have eventually starved to death anyway, or the more gruesome option 2. if she was exiled to the forest, there's a chance someone would have gone after her to hunt her down in retribution
