Oh god I have a really bad feeling about this. The way Trout is absolutely refusing to look at Sturgeon unnerves me to the core. I’m worried that Sturgeon is about to get demoted from her advisor position, either for “encouraging the Queen to mess with the laws of the Tide” earlier in the story, or for “showing an aggressive attitude towards the Queen” right now. It could happen so easily, and Trout probably wouldn’t even look Sturgeon in the eye as she said it.

In defense of Skua here, it’s literally is his job to protect Trout. Sturgeon is acting aggressively towards her (for very good reason). TBH he’d prolly do that regardless but give the guy a break.

Now I'm wondering who would win in a 1v1 fight-to-the-death between Sturgeon and Skua. My money is on Sturgeon, but I think she would be a lot worse for wear afterwards.

Trout, remember what you were saying about losing everyone? Yeah. At this rate, you're ONLY going to have Skua in your corner. Even now, she can't even look anyone in the eye when making these decisions to condemn hundreds to save her own hide. And Sturgeon. Remember that whole speech you gave Auklet about doing what's right for the island, regardless of personal feelings? I think there needs to be another regicide.

Actually I do want to comment a little more seriously because this is so tragic. You can see Trout starting to devolve even further at Sturgeon's hostility. It's clear Sturgeon doesn't know how to properly handle Trout with her PTSD and paranoia, and her growing more hostile, raising her claws even to her, will do nothing to make her listen and will only make her worse. She hasn't even slept since her monumental fuck up, and has vent art smeared on the wall, there's no doubt to me that everything Sturgeon is doing has no shot of getting through to her, even moreso with Skua at the ready to defend her, which would only further encourage Trout to side with him and his beliefs (and I don't think he's wrong to intervene, Sturgeon literally has her claws out and is raising them towards Trout, even if she isn't intending to harm her). It's unfair, unfair to both of them, mental illness is a horrible, unreasonable thing and nobody here is equipped to handle this. It breaks my heart. I don't think Trout should be hit or killed, either. What she's done is awful, unforgivable, and wholly her fault regardless of what's led her to this point, and she needs to be held accountable, but she's still a traumatized young cat given an incredible amount of power in a dire situation she was clearly not expected or supposed to have.

Honestly I don’t think killing Trout would even do anything at this point, except cause some chaos. Not that Trout’s particularly popular. But even if Sturgeon took over the Family wouldn’t accept her as queen. Her ideas (that Trout’s been implementing) are radical changes and they’re unacceptable to the cult to put it mildly. And there’s a lot more of them than there are of her or her supporters.

I'm obsessed w the discussions in the comment section. I love how arguments can be made from every characters perspective. They're all so endearing and layered even when they're behaving like assholes ❤️❤️ Trout my love idc how much trauma u have ur killing others for your own comfort. She should have never had the throne and i think she knows that, but at least have the grace to bow out and hand it over to sturgeon who actually has the gumption. loose morals be damned shes still trying to do what's right by the most people possible. Yeah itd probably get messy but if its the word of god the family will either obey or crumble. I totally get why Trout is behaving like this but shes still going to actively oppress the daisies again bc easier for her as an individual. I still don't fully understand why thresher wanted trout as the next ruler and not sturgeon but I might be not remembering something. Also when skua inevitably dies to a daisy attack or otherwise protecting her, trout is gonna go full dictator mode I'm calling it. Evil queen arc we ride. I just know hake or sturgeon is going to have to deal with her eventually its going to destroy them and I can't WAIT. Messy doomed kitty family my beloveds
