Brutal! Poor Trout and Hake having to witness all this stuff in their youth. Even if their Dad is a jerk, it would certainly be hard to watch someone you know/grew up with fading away, painfully. They all know it's not good.

It really makes sense that out of the three Trout is the most distrustful of Daisys, it seems Threshers words and trauma he inflicted on her really got to her. And the worst thing is, he attacked Petrel first, but Trout saw him nearly die (so be in a more victim-like state) if that makes sense
