For John's besties episode we're doing something we've never done before....diving into the meat and bones of a single song! Here's our elegy for Cruel Summer, and a definitive interpretation of what it means to hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine light while not dying.

Cruel Summer is honestly her sharpest song in terms of laying out a scene/dynamic… Madeline is sooo right that it straddles that boundary between elation and misery so well sonically… Style and TMIK are similar in how immersive they are and how you are just there with Taylor fucking her ex or waiting for Jake to show up to her party, but no girl captures a feeling like CS does… a top 5 off her entire catalog for sure🙏

I agree wholeheartedly with one caveat: I think a lot of the experiences Taylor writes about, specifically in Cruel Summer, can be very generational, and because she often publishes songs so chronologically, it’s easiest for those of us who are closest in age with her to “get” it? Ok potential follow up question: do you think there is somewhat of a divide in the fandom between those who were drawn to Taylor for her ability to capture these “universal” or relatable experiences vs those who followed Taylor in more of a reality TV kind of way to see into her persona and story line? If so, please discuss how this sociological structure of the fandom is impacted as she’s become more private about her personal life and moved into her status as a storyteller, especially with the Folklore/Evermore albums. Do you think she would be cognizant of this divide and would this impact her content creation going forward?

Agree with everything y’all said! I love this idea of y’all analyzing a song!

I agree with you regarding the liminal space comment (and everything else, of course, or else I'll have to kill myself).

Me, having hung my head low in the glow of the vending machine many a time but still not getting the lyric until Madeleine repeated it out loud: 😶

…..it’s cause you bend over to get the thing out of the vending machine - that’s why the head is hung low. She’s looking at this person bending over to get something out of the machine and there is vending machine light on him in a liminal space somewhere
