For example, as a teenage girl I thought that “all those others girls, well they’re beautiful, but would they write a song for you?” In Hey Stephen made her Shakespeare reborn again in the flesh. I legit thought it was SO clever and cute that it was the inspiration for the t-shirts my friend and I made for our Fearless tour show (would they make a t-shirt for you 😭)

Looking back on it now I’m like okay it’s cute and it does make me nostalgic but like WHYYY did I think she invented the English language because of it 🥲

What about you guys?!

I really thought she was onto something with “Superstar” because back then I was really into Joe Jonas 🥲

courtney

In 2010 at the ripe old age of 12 I read the lyrics of better than revenge out to my mother as if I was performing slam poetry because it blew my mind 😭

So speak now was the first tour I went to, and I was caught up on everything by then but my dad and I used to listen to “all the girls that you’ve run dry have tired lifeless eyes cuz you burned them out..But I took your matches before fire could catch me so don’t look now…” and just question how or if she was even human 😩 how could a 19-20 year old write that like it’s STILL mind blowing

Tacha

I always appreciate the way she rhymed “pub we” with “rugby” in London Boy. 😂 I know it doesn’t make her a genius, but I do think it’s clever, and it always makes me laugh. 😂

MONTAY

‘Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you’ sent me to the FUCKING MOON.

Kellie Funnell

I’m only up when you’re not down……..🤣 14 year old me was writing this on every notebook I owned

sam

i thought innocent was brave and poignant and now i think it’s just embarrassing

Christian

The wildest dreams mv changed my life when I was 10yo

Swiftologist

Mine was the last kiss bridge specifically “you can plan for a change in the weather and time but I never planned on you changing your mind…” I wanted to get it tattooed. Thank god I woke up

Julia A

I would get up every Saturday at the ripe age of 10 and watch the mine music video and I thought the photos hanging from the tree was the statement of the century

Lillie

I thought the spoken word bit in shake it off was the most pithy catchy little thing i had ever heard..the fella/hella rhyme slapped etc..and you know it is fun! but not revolutionary like id thought

Meghan Corban

“made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter” was mine …. and let’s be honest it holds up!! also “people throw rocks at things that shine,” which was definitely the precursor to “I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me”

Alyssa Moss

Our song IS slammin screen doors. I just remember thinking who could ever imagine such a thing 😂

hannah

truthfully I was ready to write a dissertation on why the best day was her BEST work when I was 14. like “and I know you were on my side, even when I was wrong” does still get me but like. I was ready to award the best day the gd Pulitzer Prize.

Tacha

“You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath” STILL has me shooketh to my core.

Olivia Donovan

lmao I’m gonna say one more becyae I love this prompt. When folklore came on for the first time, and she said “I’m doing good I’m on some new shit”.. it literally blew me up like I just knew in that moment she had cemented her legacy I was sooo happy that she was continuing to make music

leah

the way you move is like a full on rainstorm, and i’m a house of cards… poet laureate of 2010

Nitya Kadambi

This isn’t a lyric or a songwriting thing but I used to love when she did the forehead headband thing with the flower on the side. I literally thought it was the height of fashion.

lucy

there is a certain kind of intellectualism that u can only access as a bullied 13 year old watching the mean music video for the first time...i was ready to start the campaign for her nobel peace prize

Lindsay

“It rains in your bedroom everything is wrong”…. I thought that was so cryptic. And I thought it was about his bedroom not hers. So I was like what’s goin on up there. Lmao!

Erin Houghton

“Show me how much better you are” at the end of better than revenge after joe jonas wrote “much better” about his girlfriend after Taylor… and you know what? That actually was the serve of the century even as I’m thinking about it now

RiLee Andros

wake up and smell the breakup fix my heart put on my makeup…..13 yr old me was MOVED.

Tacha

I remember feeling so seen through when she said, “‘Cause when you’re 15, somebody tells you they love you, you’re gonna believe them” because it HAPPENED. I felt like Taylor had all the wisdom in the world, and I was an actual joke. 💀

Kyle Labe

I was literally 13 telling myself i’d listen to Never Grow Up the day I moved out and sob, and then I did and was like “well,, anyway….”

Dania Marin

i was OBSESSED with her snl monologue in middle school, i even downloaded the audio from the yt video and would literally listen to it repeatedly on my little ipod shuffle (!!) and thought it was so clever and such a serve.... i loved petty vengeful teenage taylor lmao

Halle

Damn I thought that spoken word intro to I Knew You Were Trouble music video was so deep that I HAD to pay a couple of dollars for it on iTunes to play on my golden iPod nano 😂 For modern Taylor, hearing “Leave the perfume on the shelf that you picked out just for him. So you leave no trace behind…like you don’t even exist” just GUTS me every time.

Brittany

Okay sorry to Stephen but she actually was a genius for that song because I met him and the song was way to good for him 🤷🏼‍♀️

A Mortensen

I thought she was a genius for the line about throwing rocks at his window in "Hey Stephen"

emeraldgreaves

as a preteen speak now and mean were unironically my favorite songs. it never occurred to me how utterly unhinged speak now is as a scenario because her delivery was just that sincere

Cardigan

Did you see the new merch? like some of it is actually good?!? Not all of it but there's these cool new t shirts based on each era

Ally ❤️

I still think that her Rep comeback is something we have never seen and we will never see again. THAT was the true acrobatic flex! 💪🏻

Sabrina

“You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter” changed my 11 year old life tbh

em

(firstly, hey stephen really had me SO gagged that 6th grade me performed it in a school talent show.) but i’m gonna add our song because honestly that was the first time the classic country twist really gagged me with “i grabbed a pen and an old napkin and i wrote down our song”

Cameron

I died and still die when she says in ATW “after plaid shirt days and nights where you made you me your own/Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone.”… I know ATW is cited as her best song, best lyrics, etc, but this still shakes me to this day. She’s saying so much with saying so little- not just the virginity allusion line, but the I WALK HOME ALONE NOW line???? Killed and kills me to this day. (But if I really pop off… she didn’t deliver it on the rerecord, certainly not ATW10, in the way it needs to be delivered.)

Cameron

Also the LWYMMD/lean into the snake/I’m the bad guy/the old Taylor is dead now/no interviews/I’m not the sweet pop star anymore thing was TRULY one of the biggest pop culture moments ever. So genius in terms of marketing a comeback. And i fully believe that was pretty much all her idea.

Marco Rubboli

English not being my first language, when I heard "dwindling mercurial high" I thought about it for months. I wondered if someone would ever create music again after it

Eden McFadden

Careless man’s careful daughter is brilliant and still gets me

Clara

When she decided to wear red lipstick, I thought that was the statement of the century. Makeup was solved. No need to have any other aesthetic. Red was a religion now.

VK

To be honest I wasn't a Taylor fan in her early days. Let's just say I mistook her "overt enthusiasm for narcissm". I knew she was a great songwriter (Speak Now & Dear John convinced me). It's only with her self referential songs in 1989 (Shake it Off & Blank Space) I believed her more. And it was reputation that made me a stan coz she shed the "aura" and became real.

※

“with no one around to tweet it” i really gagged over that line for some reasnon

Austėja

This is a dumb one and it technically doesn’t even count, but at first, when I heard "everything has changed", I thought that the lyrics were "18 eyes ago", instead of "18 hours ago". I thought that was the work of a genius, because in my mind's eye, I was imagining her leaving the said person and counting people as she passed and remembered him. I legit thought she was a mastermind for that. Little did I know that the lyrics weren’t that💀 On a more serious note, when I was ten and the "I knew you were trouble" mv was released, my whole classroom was abuzz and as I heard the spoken world inerlude-I ascended to alternate dimensions thinking that this was some poetic masterpiece of a genius.

AngelBagel

i remember there was this interview she did in 2014, back when she was on her girlboss world tour. and in the interview, she talks about how men will write songs about their exes but no one raises a red flag there. she’s not wrong, but i treated it like she ushered in 5th wave feminism with that statement alone when i was 12.

christopher c

“I’ve never heard silence quite this loud” people literally died

Sierra Ramos

The self awareness and references in Blank Space will also send me back to thinking “man, this bitch really is nuts!!! I love her!!!”

Elena Gerhardy

‘Darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream’ 👌

Katie Prinkey

I thought she was singing and the stratosphere comes creeping in when ikywt first came out when I was like 11 (even though it sounds NOTHING like stratosphere) but I thought she was the smartest person alive for using that word

Katherine

I used to think love story literally a work of literature she shamed Shakespeare into the grave lol but the last minute or so of cardigan always breaks my soul

Amy Dryden

"All we are is skin and bone, trained to get along, always going with the flow, but you're friction." Shakespeare could never.

Lauryn

…they didn’t have a song… so she wrote one. i was to say my child self thought it was genius but i’m ngl, i STILL think Our Song is genius. it’s my truth.
