The latest drama seems to be what actually constitutes being a “swiftie.” (Patreon)

Sadly there is no dictionary definition of swiftie. Webster’s can’t help us on this one, mostly because the idea of being a swiftie literally just means being a fan of Taylor. Generally I don’t give a shit if someone calls themselves a swiftie and they don’t have every single song she’s ever written memorized, especially not now when her discography is MASSIVE!!!!!!!
That said. I see people calling themselves diehard swifties and in the same breath say they don’t know Fearless. I see people calling themselves OG swifties but they don’t like country music so they never heard her debut (???). This is obviously nonsense. LMFAO. It all just plays into how much of fandom anymore is fucking posturing and proving you’re a “real fan” by doing random shit like waiting in a 12 hour line to buy an ugly sweatshirt, meanwhile you don’t even know the words to TOSOTD 😭. This could also be part of the tik tokification of society - everybody needs to go to the eras tour just because it’s trending. That literally is how it feels sometimes. The number of utterly random girlies I see making tik toks of tips and tricks for the tour, and meanwhile they were just grooving and blinking at their shows because they don’t even know the fuckinnggg woorrrdsssss.
It’s also like… a swiftie thing in general. It goes back to the dark ages. Taylor’s entire thing is her songwriting. You have to know the fucking words to these songs because it’s the entire point of being there. Not saying you should be stoned and hung because you don’t know the words to Mastermind or Fearless, but you probably shouldn’t call yourself a “diehard swiftie” when you‘ve never heard of You’re Not Sorry 😭. Normally I really don’t care about like the pedigree of a fan, but now come on. Suddenly EVERYONE wants to be a swiftie since ‘06, and EVERYBODY was there when she debuted the Our Song video, and EVERYBODY was at WalMart in Tennessee to meet her when she went and bought Fearless at midnight, and EVERYBODY remembers Adam Young’s cover of Enchanted, and EVERYBODY was there when she was a sad girl alone on a boat, and EVERYBODY was at the 1989 livestream, and EVERYBODY was there when she got cancelled in 2016. Like if all 2 billion people who claim they have always been there really WERE there, her career would’ve looked a lot different. It seems to be of supreme importance anymore to be the biggest swiftie in the FACKING room. Meanwhile half the people who claim to be these huge swifties blinked all confused when she started playing The Lucky One as a surprise song 👽
