The general idea is that love on tour completely fried people’s fucking brains - no shade to Harry, all he‘s ever done is engage his fans to make them feel special. But people will take a mile when you give them an inch.

I think the pandemic also changed the way people behave. Not to mention, how everyone is desperate for a viral moment on tik tok. It’s deranged. And it makes me sad how it’s female pop stars that are taking this abuse the most. What do you guys think is the reason people are behaving like this?

Omg and someone gave Pink a wheel of Brie cheese today lmao wtf is happening

Definitely Tik Tok and the pandemic. It’s the same thing with theatre now too, everyone’s phones are out like they’re at a damn concert with their ringers on when it’s so rude to the actors on stage. Live show etiquette is just slowly rotting away. The pandemic and re-emergence I think was definitely the catalyst.

Tbh I think Harry is the most visible example of this phenomenon but I don’t think it’s really unique to LOT, this kind of weird unhinged shit seems to be a product of people losing all social skills post-pandemic and teens who have never been to concerts before not knowing concert etiquette. Mitski was having to tell people not to call her mommy, Pink is getting people’s ashes thrown at her, Bebe getting hurt etc, it’s really fucked.

people want their viral moment and they have a weird sense of pride being the person who did THAT thing

sam

there’s literally not enough shame in society anymore…bring back shame!!!

Olivia Donovan

Yeah it’s viral moments mainly. Everyone wants to steal the spotlight from the performer, like omg! Look they interacted with ME 🥰 because I threw my moms ashes on the stage..

Taylor L

i definitely think tiktok & HSLOT are the main factors. the ease of going viral on tiktok (compared to other platforms) plus the popularization of throwing things on stage at HSLOT have really influenced people imo… i do think covid also had an impact bc maybe these are a lot of younger people’s first concerts?? idk

Olivia Donovan

Actually it’s kind of a reason why the eras tour is so great. There’s too many people to compete with and Taylor would never acknowledge it or interact.. and everyone knows they’d be dragged out of eras by their asses if they threw anything on stage so in a way.. eras is the example.

You’re right on the money, IMO. I’d add that I think we are seeing the backswing of our relationship to social media and celebrities. Celebrities used to be completely inaccessible pre-social media, which caused large reactons at concerts (fainting spells, crazed roadies, stalking, etc). Then, the rise and sudden ubiquity social media made celebrities accessible—they were humanized. Recently, people got bored! The novelty has worn. The reactions to the pandemic made some people hate celebrities, and some people channel that into IRL reactions because tweeting isn’t enough. It’s like what is technologized boomerangs around toward our most human nature: real, physical contact.

I think love on tour was a hugeee part of it because it was one of the first tours from a major artist that started after the pandemic! I think people were so excited to be back to live music and also Harry feeds into it accidentally by interacting with the audience so much ….. love on tour also seemed to be when the trend of going to TONS of shows started to explode. One girl I knew in college has been to 19 Harry shows in the past year or so (including international dates) which I don’t feel like was really a thing pre-pandemic???? The parasocial relationships are getting out of control

I commented this on Madeline's post, but I saw this unhinged stuff last week at Halsey. People kept shouting to the point where she couldn't get through the very emotional story she was telling.

lucy

i blame the person who got charli xcx to sign their douche back in 2019

Lyndsey

I feel like everyone is competing to "prove" they're a fan/stan "prove" some sense of "I'm a bigger fan than you"

Sabrina

I think a huge part of this is just that it’s being documented and going viral on Twitter and TikTok now. Live music has always been notorious for bad etiquette.

LuckyStar

What is it with people throwing their phones on stage? I’ve seen that a bunch of times.

LuckyStar

TikTok is a cancer on society. I watch it I admit but it’s increasingly problematic.

People think of these artists as like fictional characters and not people. The guy who threw the phone at Bebe Rexha did it because he thought it would be “funny,” meanwhile it literally gave her a black eye! I don’t think Harry’s tour is 100% to blame (I’d say the HSLOT behavior is more a reflection of tik tok craziness than exclusive to his shows) but I do think he’s way too big of an artist at this point to be doing these interactions with the crowd that just do nothing but feed into the delusions. I recently saw a clip of him doing a pregnant fan’s gender reveal at his show… like wtf!? Why is he doing that!? Lmao

Michaela Wagner

I think it’s a lot of genz’s first concerts without parents too and they haven’t been to enough concerts to know Although there were some 30 year olds in the crowd at Carly Rae being dicks and ruining my experience lol Like who tf has conversations in the middle of a packed crowd who are TRYING TO BOP

Victoria weisheit

It kinda feels to me like a mix btwn the pandemic and younger people not going to concerts till now and this weird competition mentality?? I went to a boygenius concert recently and witnessed some real cringe behavior from the younger fans. It seemed like they were all competing to be the biggest fan/get the best spots/take the best pictures. Idk, it was really weird

Brenna

I think it just so happened to be a culmination of things that created the perfect shitstorm that we are watching now. The pandemic certainly didn’t assist with people learning “how to people”. I think that people’s entitlement for what they feel they're “owed” for being a hardcore fan has gotten out of control. A lack of understanding about the importance of boundaries and an overly permissive style of parenting, I think, has contributed to this completely chaotic landscape. But wtf do I know?

The Gen Z (not all of them) has no manners it’s really sad

GW

Lack of live show experiences with parents… Some of these Gen Z concert goers obviously didn’t have to sit through The X Factor Live In Concert tour with their mums and it SHOWS.

Charlotte

People (aka mostly gen Z) want to get noticed so badly that they'll go to great (and ridiculous) lengths to get their foot in the door. They don't realize that they're slamming said door on their foot. They're somehow immune to pain and shame and I want to know their SECRET RECIPE for this but I also want to give them a gentle slap. This is sooooo deranged. I'm not sure it really got started with Harry's tour but people definitely un-learned civility during the pandemic and now they're trying to catch up on everything dumb they didn't get to do for over 2 years ... ? Idk. It's unhinged and disturbing. I went to Star Wars Celebration in London back in April and some of the fans were definitely crossing big lines with actors, directors, voice actors etc.

Olivia Claire

My pet peeve this tour is everyone wearing cowboy hats during shows, this ain’t Harry Styles and Taylor hasn’t worn a cowboy hat on stage since debut so unless you were yeehawing to Mary’s Song, stop it! And look, fine for the photos of the outfit beforehand and outside the stadium, but take it off during the actual show and stop being inconsiderate of people behind you. Same with elaborate, tall costume headbands or any headwear that could obstruct views. Etiquette is dead.

carly

I think it’s much much much more about tik tok and social media than it is about Harry, his tour was just one of the first big ones post pandemic and post tik tok really blowing up. Tik tok caused just about every other social media platform to push push push video content, and concerts ARE a great place to capture awesome videos. People have always wanted to show off concerts on socials - from a digital camera Facebook post to 20 Snapchat stories in a row - people crave that “look at me having fun” moment, and that has turned into the current trends of ‘let me get the artists attention in a video’ so that it will go viral, and they will have comments like “omg they looked right at you,” “I’m so jealous,” “you were so close that’s so cool!” It’s the current trends, especially as social media (mainly tik tok) has become less about showing off to friends and more showing off to strangers. Where as before it was seeking validation from your friends swiping up on your billionth Snapchat story, it’s now strangers tik tok comments of validation. It’s not at all Harry’s fault though, I think the timing of his tour and his willingness to interact with the crowd just made him an easy target. His tours have always been interactive, and people didn’t act like this on his pre-pandemic tours.
