Tbh. This is a sentiment I also have held for a minute. I felt like the Karma video was a fun vibes video at first and then I think she ruined it with the fucking Easter egg shit. I miss when a video was just a video for the sake of a look, or for making the song come to life. Don’t even get me going on how the Bejeweled video was just one massive egg for SNTV …

What do you guys think about this????

I was pretty annoyed that the I can see you music video was more of an Easter egg and had literally nothing to do with the song

kc

i totally agree! the karma video was just plain fun and then the last 30 seconds ruined it for me. idgaf about easter eggs just give me the music!!!!

Ilias

So true. Visually I love her music videos still, but they don’t tell a story anymore or have a cohesive aesthetic because of the easter eggs. It’s way too focused on “teasing the next thing”.

Ali R

I hate to say it, but I agree! Bring back the old videos that actually told stories & made sense with the song…Lovestory, You Belong with Me, Wildest Dreams…heck, even Shake it Off!

NicholasJT

The only good reason she can get away with easter eggs is with a re-record MV's tbh! I feel like Bejeweled was meant to release days before the tour but release early in order to secured the top 10

Lyndsey

I have felt this way about her music videos for awhile as well. I don't really care for new music video premieres because it usually doesn't add anything to the current music that is out. The ICSY music video is a perfect example of this.

Nitya Kadambi

In general I agree with this. I think the excessive Easter egging can cheapen the art. I loved all too well 10 because it just told the story and it wasn’t focused on decoding anything. If I am being totally honest I have not really loved and been obsessed with a music video of hers since the 1989 era (besides ATW 10). I get why she does the Easter eggs but I wish it wasn’t ALL the time.

Hungrygames

none of the new videos have any iconic or memorable visuals that will become iconic in her career because they’re all just references to prior iconic moments. i don’t think it’s a good sign for the future if nothing is about doing anything new

Michaela Wagner

I feel torn! I don’t give a duck about prophetic Easter eggs anymore… but I do think the time of music videos for music videos sake is long over unless we’re talking kpop lol. So I think a little extra self reference for fun is wonderful I liked the lavender haze MV because I thought it was a good balance of just being a music video while being self referential. Same with LWYMMD. It’s referencing things but ALSO it’s what the song is about. What annoys me is when it’s not letting it be about the song like I can see you or bejewelled. I really am having empathy for an era (??) atm bc midnights has nothing of her own EXCEPT Joe break up and crochet garments

Carrson

I Can See You also would’ve worked better if it’s how she revealed the sntv cover

yvonne

i totally agree ‘i can see you’ is such a GREAT song and she ruined it with a waste of a concept 😭😭😭 it could’ve been soooo good! i’m over trying to find the meaning in every little easter egg what happened to just having a fun storyline to a music video 🥲

Emily J

If blondie is going for her coveted Oscar, then these videos are not helping her in that aspect. Give me camp, give me Fun, give me a storyyyy. Please! I want to be swept away like the wildest dreams music video again

shannymac

Agreed! I think the exception is LWYMMD. But that was a special circumstance, mostly due to it being her coming back after her disappearance. I just wish she’d stop directing her own stuff and stop writing the treatments solo and go back to working with other directors. Maybe that way the Easter eggs could still be there, because she clearly looooves them, but the videos themselves could make more sense.

Erin Houghton

I think it ties in with her directing her own videos too tbh… like outside of atw10 I haven’t really enjoyed her self-directed videos, and atw10 is the only self-directed music video that doesn’t exist to be a vehicle for Easter eggs. That’s not a coincidence

Tolya

For some reason, I feel like it’s kind of similar to the state of her songwriting right now. Videos have a ton of potential, but no editing/outside input because of how big and famous she is. I feel like with proper curation, she could get multiple iconic easter egg moments while still retaining the storytelling in the videos.

Manuel

Oml yes, i saw that post on Reddit and agreed with everything they were saying. I just want to be told a story or be served looks when I watch music videos. The easter egging is fun to a point, but we crossed that point a while ago.

Camara Kidd

omg i was just reading this post… and i agree tbh

Leslie

I agree. I have honestly never been that interested in music videos as like, a medium. Not just Taylor's but in general. So I am perhaps not the intended audience as my level of excitement for even a "good" music video is pretty low. But making videos as just a vehicle for Easter eggs seems like a waste of time and talent, and to be honest it strikes me as a cynical approach and kind of a cheap way to encourage repeat views.

Starsonscars

Guess I’m the only one who actually likes her videos! She is extremely creative. I am completely impressed by her directing skills as well. I’m naive enough to think it’s all genuinely art. If it’s a giant, PR-driven commercial… shame on her. She may be the only one who truly knows.

An1Li

I gotta agree. thinking of my top 10 taylor music videos, nothing after 2020 would make it in except MAYBE cardigan. The Easter eggs have gotten insane. What did the midnights music videos add to the album? I wouldn't be able to tell you because every single one of them was built almost entirely on teasing something completely unrelated to midnights

Vrishti Hasija

I am not sure how she will continue with this easter egging compulsion after re-recordings are done. I hope she goes back to normal videos after that but lets see

Sage

it feels like she is trying to build her portfolio as a director with her music videos. Which isn’t a bad thing but so many of her recent videos just feel like she is showing people how ‘diverse’ her aesthetics can be when nothing is actually that experimental. I feel like the last time she challenged herself was cardigan (the ocean/water scenes in particular) and atw10 (where she shot on actual film and not just digital). I think returning to a Blank Space style of music video, that has both a story and a particular vision, would be nice. She isn’t Madoona or Lady Gaga but a video that doesn’t make me feel spoon feed and that challenged her AS a director would be nice.

Erin S

I am not a huge music video connoisseur across the board, but I feel like music videos where the concept/storyline of the music video is NOT just a literal visual representation of the song lyrics is something that’s been around for awhile. Early MVs (I’m a child of the 80s) were much more literal in their execution, but then there seemed to be a trend away from that type of storytelling towards some other unique narrative concept for the video with the music then serving more like a soundtrack element. Or maybe it’s a shift that happens during the course of an artist’s career… they start off making music videos that act out the song and then move towards more abstract video concepts. I don’t know if Swifties are more desiring of the literal visual representation type of MVs because Taylor’s songwriting is already so storytelling in its nature that we get a strong visual in our mind when listening and then we want to see that acted out, or if it’s just a nostalgia for her early videos. Personally, as a visual artist myself (I’m a photographer) I’d find a greater challenge in creating a visual that fits the vibe of the music and then draws inspiration from some underlying feeling in the song or expounds on a single line in the song to create a storyline for the music video. It’s kind of a cheat or a cop-out to just take the song narrative and act it out. Also, maybe we’re the ones who have ruined her music videos by just seeing them as a big easter egg hunt and not just enjoying them for what they are? Regardless… I do think Taylor could benefit from a co-director or some other collaborator to get her out of her own head.

Erin Nicolle

I totally hear this and agree, at the same time (unpopular opinion) I liked the pairing of “I Can See You” with the video. I felt like even though the lyrics are obviously about something different, the sneaky/sultry/smooth vibe of the song totally goes with the heist theme. The best example being when she says “keep quiet”

Elise Fischer

Very true. I miss (most of lol)the old videos. I want them to be mini movies that tell a story and make the song come to life. And I don’t mind a few Easter eggs. They can be fun. But now it’s just overkill

Liv

Agreed. Probably why the IBYTAM video felt refreshing to me. It was more in line with her older videos instead of being a giant Easter egg. Bejeweled was probably the worst. She could’ve done a really cool video of her slaying at a club or whatever and instead we got…that. Glad she’s in such a creative kick, but the videos just haven’t been it lately. My really hot take is that she should get Joseph Khan back. Say what you want about him, but most of his videos slayed. Blank Space is my all time favorite.

Ashley C

Bejeweled could've been this awesome music video of her actually going to a party and making the whole place shimmer. Like so many creative ideas. Instead it just felt sparse with the entire cast being cameos

Lauren

I never even considered that until reading this post but I totally agree. I love the LWYMMD video, but I think it started the trend. It makes sense cause that’s the last video I’ve really loved from her, after that era she started relying on easter eggs too much.

Cardigan

I don't care , if you aren't someone who cares about Easter eggs just ignore them and if you do care it's fun for you. I personally don't look for eggs but I still love watching the videos. I also know casual fans who watch the videos and they never notice them lol only dedicated fans do

em

i do agree, and i do think this has contributed to newer fans believing that everything taylor ever says is an easter egg for something. i would love to just live in the moment a bit more and enjoy one thing at a time. she really wants to prove herself as a director and while it’s her creative license to use that for setting easter eggs for fans, i would love to see her focus on telling a story with her music videos instead

Cristina

I completely agree. Actually she's either doing completely literal MV or completely Easter egg videos. From the two I do prefer literal...but something like 10m atw...hear me out..I had a video like that already in my head every time Iisten to the song...I kinda wished the short film added a bit more to that... something that's not said in the song...but still very much on topic. I still like it but I feel like it could have told a bit more of the story without showing line by line scenes. Like the fighting scenes is a good example showing the dynamics that are not spelled out in the song. I am really sad that Midnights didn't get any video about the midnight songs!!! It's all just Easter eggs ... imagine getting video for Question...? And it has nothing to do with the song subject matter...whats the point. Also to add another hot take....I think every time she used CG in her videos it looked really bad and age really bad.

Cristina

Another thing about all the Easter eggs she puts everywhere now is: they are either impossible to guess e.g. timeless hourglass in the karma video. Ok. Or - are things like the rerecords...like she's been hinting that 1989 is coming since the man! It's in I bet you think about me cake, it's in Bejeweled, it's in karma it's in I can see you, the merch price...like there's no point to hinting that anymore...it could drop this Friday or there could be another 10 music videos that hint to 1989...what's the point

Tal

girl4433

And it’s even worse when Taylor is the one directing the video

Iman

I agree! I think it would be more exciting if the hints were rarer. The LWYMMD video Easter eggs were fun Bc it was NEW. But constantly making us think about the next thing instead of appreciating a song and aesthetic it can provide in the moment gets old. I just want a cute video for I Can See You! Or clues so indecipherable that you don’t even know they’re clues till we get info 3 years later. If that happened I know sections of the fandom would still read into everything but I stay away from them as much as I can so whatever 😂

Starbuck1234!

While I understand the sentiment, I think it reminds me a bit of 2014. Here’s what I mean by that. 1. She didn’t have friends growing up, she was bullied, and didn’t fit in. She had that “I’ll show them all” mentality. Needing to prove to all the kids who were mean to her, she didn’t need friends because her fans were her friends. Talk about parasocial relationships with her, well she has one with the fandom. She is primarily a solo artist for most of her career. 2. Then, 2009 VMAs happen, and an Icon tells the world that she doesn’t belong and isn’t good enough. that same mentality kicks in “I’ll show them that I really do belong”. 3. Then, Red gets subbed at the Grammy’s and the same thing, she’s going to go home and cry about it, then decides she is going to make the record she wants and with the people she wants, will call it 1989, and she’s going to show them that they got it wrong. 4. then comes 2014 and she is a young 24 yr old who has now found a group of friends. Some fair weather, she will find out later, but a group of friends. And the media and the gp tell her she shouldn’t have “those” model friends. The models could be friends with each other but Taylor just doesn’t belong, SHE shouldn’t have a squad like that. 5. Nearly 10 years pass, she has been the solo artist all that time. She FINALLY finds friends and musical soulmates that she feels connected to, and they to her. She loves working with them, and creating with them. Even if we want her to work with other people, she has finally found a group, a core, where she belongs. After never finding that her entire life, she has found that now. And she is making music she wants to make with them, and having fun doing it. 6. 2023 music videos. She’s come from not having any friends, to not having a musical partner, to not feeling like they belonged, to now finally finding ALL OF THAT, and she’s not tanking. She’s on top of the world right now. If her idea of fun is making these videos with the people she wants to make videos with, then I think she should be able to do whatever she wants as long as she is happy doing it. So much of her life she has been on her own and alone, not fitting in, and now she finally has that and we are telling her not to do the thing that is making her the happiest? no. I think Taylor Allison Swift should do whatever she wants, she deserves to be happy, and if it is making those videos with Easter eggs all over them then so be it. The music is still better than most being put out today and her videos are still better than most put out today. So, I”m not going to tell her what I think she should and shouldn’t do or who she should and shouldn’t collaborate with (her friends) because that reminds me of 2014.

i think a significant aspect is that easter eggs were important to actually communicate something we didn't know— (for example in her album liner notes, she was revealing personal insights about the songs you couldn't find anywhere and would likely never be elaborated on. in reputation/LWYMMD, she had references to criticisms of her and public debacles that she'd never previously acknowledged and decided to represent them in a tongue-in-cheek way.) she used to have something novel to say through them, something which couldn't be openly said through normal communication channels, which is why every fan would feel compelled to pour through updates. but since lover era it became clear she was going to use it exclusively for marketing future singles, which still somewhat worked for those invested but NOW it's literally marketing for music we have already heard and already anticipate. which is why the only faction of the fan base it appeals to is puzzle solvers and conspiracy theorists.

Pranya

also!! for midnights in particular would be hard to make music videos about that honestly/directly addressed the subject matter because i assume the alwyn break up was imminent at the time and she had to work around it /speculation which is why she could do a real mv for anti-hero that is primarily about her own feelings of isolation and guilt but not for bejewelled/lavender haze which come from disillusionment with their relationship. karma remix mv....a befuddler .....

Angelina Veneziano

this is the reason i don't think a movie by her is an automatic win. none of these music videos have arcs. the 10 minute all too well video was CLOSER, but the improv audio tainted it for me. i hope she gets a liz rose of the film world to co-write with her.
