It just got me thinking about Taylor and Ed’s friendship and how long they’ve been friends. I think Ed is an important person to her and always will be, because they have such a strong bond from coming up in the industry together as songwriters, but…

What do you guys think about Ed having John Mayer open a couple shows for him on his tour and still being friends with Taylor ?? For me I don’t think she’s had in depth conversations with Ed about what happened with John because I don’t think they have that kinda friendship if that makes sense. He’s an industry and musician friend, and they talk abt the business and songwriting and etc etc but I really doubt she goes to him about her relationships 😭 especially not traumatic ones. I think that he’s probably heard Dear John, but I could imagine him listening to Wouldve Couldve Should’ve and not realizing who it’s about or the true extent of it, if that makes any sense. I could also imagine him just not having heard it being that it’s on a deluxe edition of the record. In general, my read on the situation is that he literally is fucking clueless lmfaooo.

Also it’s almost irrelevant because clearly, Taylor doesn’t seem to be all that upset about it!

I'm not an Ed Sheeran stan by any means, but I like him as a person and he's always been my favorite Taylor friendship. I get the sense that there's almost a friendly rivalry between the two of them and they keep each other at the top of their game. I think they are probably brutally honest with each other when it comes to giving feedback on their music etc. and I think it's important for artists to have that kind of sounding board. I agree with you that they are more industry friends than like close confidants on personal matters (I think Taylor has that kind of bond exclusively with female friends and maaaaybe Jack). I was honestly worried for a while that she and Ed had had a falling out since he hasn't been to any Eras shows (I know he's on tour too, but there were a few shows he could have made it to), and because of the John Mayer thing and the fact that Taylor weirdly took Everything Has Changed out of that weird Red music box intro on the Eras tour. I thought there was beef lol. I'm glad to see that isn't the case. Re: the John stuff. I agree that Ed probably doesn't know the extent of it since he met Taylor after that period of her life and because, like you said, he probably isn't the kind of friend she'd confide in about that stuff. But I also wonder if at some point John reached out and apologized to her. Maybe after he heard WCS, who knows. She really emphasized during that Dear John speech that she's not holding onto resentment from what happened to her at 19, which is weird given the WCS of it all, so it did make me wonder if they cleared the air at some point and she's more at peace with everything now. But don't get me wrong, John Mayer still deserves JAIL, now and forever.

I do think the speech she gave when she did Dear John & Ed going on tour with John Mayer wasn't a coincidence. I have a feeling that after he got body slammed and embarrassed by wading into that Nikki/Taylor drama years ago their friendship may have changed. Not ended, just changed.

I do think it goes beyond him being an industry friend though. They are super low key about their lives and Ed especially keeps his personal life extremely private nowadays but he was at Joe Alwyn’s birthday dinner a year or 2 ago where it was only joe, Taylor, Ed, his wife, Joe’s brother and his partner. For him to be at such a small personal dinner for joe indicates to me that him and taylor are still very close but just don’t share much of their friendship publicly the way they did in 1989 and red era. Maybe it’s not the same as when they were younger but I think it goes deeper than them being musician friends. Tbh I would say they are probably closer now than her and Selena. Also Ed talked about how Taylor encouraged ed to work with Aaron and while I don’t think Taylor is threatened by ed I still don’t think she is personally offering up her closest collaborators to anyone else. Also she helped get him and his wife together. The John situation is weird but I do agree they probably haven’t talked about it. I think Taylor prob didn’t really talk about the John situation at all back then bc wcs really seems like her trying to go back and process something that she suppressed her emotions on for years

I agree in thinking that Ed just might be clueless about the whole John Mayer situation. I also agree with the fact that maybe Taylor just doesn’t care. I’ve seen people point out that Gigi is still friends/friendly with the KarJenners and we all know the history there all too well. I also think that they’re closer than just “industry friends”. While doing promo for his most recent album, he said that they have “long, long, long conversations…because I feel like she's one of the only people that actually truly understands where I'm at”. He also compared these conversations to therapy. I’m pretty sure he said in 2021 for Equals promo that Taylor is also close with his wife

As petty and vindictive as Taylor can be, I do think she draws a line in some ways between personal and professional. Certain inner circle pals unfollowed Joe that week after the breakup, but others like Jack and Aaron (and of course Margaret) still follow him. I don't think she would interfere in Ed's career, who he collabs or performs with, over her previous personal issues. I don't think she's necessarily confided in him in detail about her history with John, but he must know at least as much as we as fans do, but I think he's separating the art from the man's past behavior. I don't believe her pre-Dear John speech had anything to do with him opening for Ed, and it's highly unlikely that John ever apologized for anything or that he and Taylor are "good" now. It's much more likely that she was trying to avoid any legal or PR issues around her fans harassing or threatening John, because he wouldn't be quiet about it, and the re-release of her only fully self-written album would end up becoming all about him. I have a feeling Taylor didn't mind all that much that John opened for Ed, because doing so is such a major burn. I mean, Ed's career took off because he opened for Taylor on the Red tour, now she is the music industry, Ed is on his own massive world tour behind Taylor, and John, who has been in the industry longer than either of them and attempted a modest tour himself this year, is the last-minute fill-in opener for Ed. I'm sure Taylor had a good cackle over that one.

Ed Sheeran is friends with Scooter Braun, so it's both a 'Taylor doesn't talk about serious emotional shit pertaining to men to with Ed' and also Ed problematically doing that classic male cognitive dissonance. I think if Taylor was bothered by Ed's friendship with Scooter and John, she soon got over it because Ed means so much to her and also she's a people-pleaser and is trying to hold on to people who matter to her.

I think they’re super close seeing how involved in the beginning of Ed’s relationship Taylor was. I just don’t think she cares all that much. Her friends have followed other problematic people in her life and I think she can separate. I think if it really bothered her then she’d distance herself from him, but he’s continued to be an important person in her life.

Lana

I have a feeling that she's so close with Ed that she doesn't want the JM thing to get in the way of that. Also who knows how much say Ed even had, since it seems it was already pretty last minute. I also think that even though he's still friends with Scooter Taylor might use that as an advantage to keep tabs on him? Either way I'm glad they still seem close. She's definitely at the point in her life where she's cut the fat and only her true friends remain.

I think Taylor is kind of over the John Mayer thing. I took her speech midsummer about not caring what happened to her when she was 19 at face value. I think she really has moved past that. I know WCS has a ton of emotion and feeling in it, but I think she was really able to access her past feelings about it in order to write and record that song. Even though it talks about “can’t let this go, I regret you all the time” I think it’s a past version of Taylor that is singing there.

Ty

I’m just surprised she forgave him for making the divide album

Kevin

I think Ed is still friends with scooter tho, so I’m kinda surprised tay hasn’t cut him off knowing the petty queen she is 🤔

I didn’t realize that there was any speculation about dear John being about Martin Johnson… it would be a little less direct on the name play. But what IF we’ve had it wrong all this time? I guess it really just made me think… we actually have no idea what goes on. But she makes us feel like we do… and for that… we applaud. 😂

Madeline Marona

Think there’s also a layer where artists don’t even have control over who opens for them. Taylor does but unless you’re at that level (Ed’s not that far away but he might not care enough to pick) the label just chooses for you.

John only opened for Ed because Khalid (sp?) was in a car accident & couldn't do it. I saw some clips of their concert in Boston and I have to admit- John is a great guitar player and was very humble and appreciative to Ed for having him. Still hate him for how he treated Taylor though...

I feel like Ed is a coworker friend. You love hanging out with them at work, you go to them to talk work gossip and collaboration, but you NEVER talk about your private life past surface level things. I have always been an Ed Sheeran hater. After that song came out Shape of You I've just had a weird vibe about Ed. Then after he ditched her post 1989 it solidified to me that he was a fake friend. When I saw he had John Mayer open for him I really wasn't surprised. Even if Taylor never talked to Ed about her past trauma with John....the song dear John exists. I feel like when you're in the music industry everyone has a reputation (lol) and John Mayers has always been that he's basically a womanizer POS and borderline emotional abuser. So it's not like Ed was completely in the dark. Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter

Lyndsey

Also am I the only one who is wondering if Ed is still even relevant? He's just kinda there compared to his impact on the music scene years ago. Sure, he still has his fans but it's not like it use to be. Kind of curious how now hes friends with Taylor publicly again because he wasn't publicly friends with her in post 1989...

What’s with all the friggin editions again?
