Gorgeous analysis from beginning to end. Giving this song the respect and sensitivity it deserves!

In reference to your question about whether Midnights really is about “sleepless nights” throughout Taylor’s life: My theory is that Midnights is a present-day album: it’s Taylor’s exploration of whether to break up with Joe and how to get over it, and she is ruminating about her past in order to answer these questions. Questions like “why does this keep happening to me? To what extent is it my fault versus his? How will I get through it if we break up?” Etc. As part of that process of reflection she draws parallels between her issues with Joe and what happened with her exes. Eg Maroon, which feels like an amalgam of her current relationship souring, and others before it. To me this is why the songs are confusing and often about both present and past, together… Perhaps this is obvious to many of us here but I‘d love to discuss more!

Thanks queen!!!! I love you so much. I still haven’t recovered from the Hoax breakdown that I listened to… well I lost track of how many times I listened to it. It was THAT good!!!!

Ally ❤️

She wrote this with Aaron after the 2021 Grammies where he performed 😔

Ally ❤️

I sooooo want to hear you breakdown the #1 hit from Lover: Cruel Summer - some of those lyrics are a mystery!

Nadine

Okay, the stained glass window information is a game changer!! I thought is was another wedding imagery and that never made sense to me

Abigail Ray

Sooo insightful, and amazing love it! All while making me laugh through tears this song brings me. Thanks doll 🎀🤍

Yaaa loved this analysis! Also I interpreted the stain glass windows lyric as also being a part of the religious metaphor since stain glass windows depict iconic scenes of the bible (the resurrection etc) . The scenes always stay the same aka she keeps getting flashbacks to the same scenes throughout the relationship. I never knew about the john mayer house so that rocked my shit I fear

Gracie Day

just listened and LOVED it. Also, I really really love your logo

Ally ❤️

The thing is: JOHN qualified her as being a child (“child sitting in the corner drawing doodles” or some such shit) I will never willingly shoot any coin that man’s way. Don’t care how good he is. He is an undeserving human.

She also says "should've" in bigger than the whole sky

this was amazing!

This was fantastic! And so spot on as far as the power dynamic goes. I was in the same kind of relationship also at 19 with an older man and it wasnt until i got closer to his age in my life that i was like "dude!!! Wtf is wrong with men?!" It really is so gross. Im a social worker now and we speak a lot to age and power gaps. And no shame if there is an age gap that works for both parties once you arw both well into adulthood, but those two ages are huuuuge.

I'm an rare endangered hetero-snake and let me say that my sense of childhood was stolen from me when I was 19 so this song is very personal to me. The two lines I relate to most are "you're a crisis of my faith" and "I regret you all the time" the crisis of my faith is interesting because my experience was similar to Taylor's where I was with this girl and it wasn't what everyone thinks but there was a part of me that was lost after everything broke down. I definitely know the song isn't for me but that doesn't stop me from relating to it. I'm still religious and I have a feeling Taylor is still as well based on how often she references it but I there's just a sense of maturity you go through when you experience something like this. It all happened because we were at a party and I noticed her staring at me and I walked over and we started talking. It's literally the same story. She called me a "poison to her conscience" but didn't care to elaborate. There was a time in my life when I wish I could go back and change my decision to go to the party where we met. She was like the devil, she stained my youth and made me the enemy. Looking back it was amazing in the moment but now I'm absolutely traumatized by it, it altered who I am as a person and caused me to lose a sense of self I once had. It made my life interesting but in the end we pretend like the other person doesn't exist. And that kills me. I miss who I was before that and I constantly have dreams about making things right but I know it'll never happen. The tomb literally won't close and I regret it all the time
