So I've paused at the Chappell Roan talk only to say that I did see her live in Atlanta, GA (USA), aaaand she was fucking great (even though she was losing her voice), but it was not the kind of crowd y'all described. It was uncomfortably crowded.

When thinking about what era comes next I actually think she might have something to gag us all, she hasn’t reinvented herself since folklore since evermore was the same, and midnights is very much the eras era, her old versions of herself, so she hasn’t had to like completely find some new persona since 2020, and we likely won’t get a new album until next year, so that gives her 4 years to come up with something

Albums used to be $15-25 so I try to listen to all the tracks to make it worth $. $1~ tracks and music libraries allow us to explore more artists and customize our music collections but at the expense of artist’s income and encouraged focus on hits, live shows revenue and artists’ online persona / charisma. Singers songwriters are not necessarily show stopping performers: remember Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLaughlin, Jewel, etc? Music has become dependent on visual media. Back then you can release an album with a good voice only. Like Zach says, now’s like you can be a no-hit wonder purely as an influencer. Listeners including myself got used to sample a song skip to the chorus before deciding to buy (yes, I still buy songs— I don’t trust when the content may leave) so we ended up with 3” tunes (e.g. Maroon 5’s A Song for Jane album were 4+ minute actual songs, not catchy jingles like Sugar— catchy tunes make hits but they don’t last and don’t warrant purchase. 2001 Brit Awards Yellow by Cold Play vs 2017 I Want Something Just Like This with Chainsmokers 🫨😑🤔💭 tbf I like Closer feat. I wish her artist side will win out the business side and remain fearless: Success$ should be followed by self-improvement and introspection not complacency or playing it safe— look at movie blockbuster sequel reboot spinoff flops. Quality takes time. I wonder what % fans prefer to wait for the next album vs “crowd was chanting more” 🤔💭 wouldn’t it be great if she leaves behind a legacy like Bowie?! He famously was not afraid to experiment with genres and identify-alter ego Ziggy Stardust; he’s also business savvy too: “Bowienet, the first music artist to become an Internet Service Provider (ISP)”. Maybe it’s too tall an order, but to be a cultural icon, these innovative ideas would be more meaningful than breaking music charts and sales records 🤔💭
