Welcome back to a surprise episode of Kiki Lounge. The demise of the meth math doers has been too delicious to keep us away from the microphones, so here we are. Relishing in the inevitable: Gaylor Demise! We discuss the original article, the CNN rebuttal, and of course the Swiftologist pile on. You'll be getting your Taylor Talk (which is different this month, the return of the bone collector...) tomorrow!

The thing about the NYT editor having written about Harry’s sexuality that intrigued me is that, having been around during the 2008-2014 Tumblr era, it really seemed like Gaylorism started as a knee-jerk reaction from Larrie's to Taylor and Harry dating. Taylor was accused of bearding for JG, because there were rumors that he was gay at the time, and then she started dating Harry, who had a whole subgroup of fans already shipping him with Louis. This was the height of Supernatural, 1D, Stucky shipping on tumblr where a bunch of those fans would conspiracy theorize that any woman, real human or fictional, who started dating one half of their ship, real human or fictional, was either an evil bitch who needed to be exposed or a lesbian helping beard for them. Taylor choosing to focus on her female friendship at the same time the Easter egging frenzy really took off just added fuel to the fire. I've always theorized that the original iteration of gaylorism was born out of the internalized misogyny of Larries.

Also, in response to Madeline bravely stating that she is annoyed by Karma: Karma by MARINA > Karma by Taylor Swift there I said it.

Lisa Emerson

The discourse of public scrunity around ANY persons sexuality is vile. PERIOD! The New York Times article could have been a much better article if they left Taylor Swift out of it and discussed anti-queer semantics in Nashville and country music. There's your story!

Yana Tretyakova

Gaylors always ask Taylor to "come out" as gay or straight. As if it would put a stop to the endless discussions. However, when Shawn Mendes said that he was not gay, a lot of people still continued to speculate. So how Taylor saying directly that she's straight (which she did) will make any difference to them? unfortunately, many gaylor creators "have sources close to Taylor" that claim that she's gay/bi etc.

Yana Tretyakova

an episode of you reacting to any video/podcast on Gaylor evidence would be a fire

This is all just so bonkers. And annoying because I think there could be some interesting discourse regarding reading Taylor's work through the lens of queer theory. I tend to come at readings and analysis of art from a "Death of the Author" standpoint – readings of the work outside the scope of the author's intention are legitimate if they can be supported by evidence in the text and can be analyzed via a consistent theoretical framework or set of personal experiences. But that doesn't mean those readings change the author's intent, or worse, open the author's personal life to conspiratorial speculation. So along with everything else wrong with the the Gaylor's conspiratorial delusions, they're also casting a bad light on legitimate personal and academic readings of Taylor's work that engage with queer themes or narratives.

Hats off to you. I don’t know how you wade through the bog of Gaylor and Gaylor-adjacent comments. I try reading it and zone out every time. It’s fanfic to me. From the beginning of her career she’s had men in her music videos. Men in her songs. Men have clearly been the focus of her romantic affection. She gets one super-best-friend in her 20s and now she's a great big liar forever. I just cringe to think that people speculate on everyone they admire to this exhaustive degree.

Lisa Emerson

Also Chely Wright was a rising star on 1998-99 then silence. You two weren't listening. But she wasn't huge internationally. She had an Oprah interview in like 2008 coming out. When she wrote a book would was a lesbien moment for elder millenials.

Carly

That’s a really great point about Shawn. A lot of Gaylors say “well she’s never said she’s straight..” well duh, that would anger a shit tonne of people. Also Lauren Jauregui from 5th harmony has since come out and said the rumours about her and Camilla were traumatising and made her feel like a predator.

Sydney Shepard

Omg the "why do you think my mother is the psychopath she is, because she has not JOB" is one of the most accurate things I've ever heard in relation to my own life 😂😂

Dia

Also conspiracy theory just means a theory that people are “conspiring” to keep something secret…i.e Taylor and team conspiring to keep her “real” sexuality a secret, despite no evidence…that’s a conspiracy!

Tyler

I’ve always understood karma the way Madeline does like “Taylor only has good karma because she’s such a good person” lmao but it didn’t bother me because I don’t think she’s being deadass

Jessica S

REAL... explains my own mother too!!

Sarah

Omg I didn’t realize it was Jan 6 release. What. Lol

Phewwwww I cheered and clapped so 👏🏼 many 👏🏼 times! 👏🏼 Something that I think has gotten sooooo lost in the mess of this whole thing (and in general with cancel culture / today's "social justice" policing etc etc) is that one of the superpowers of art is to inspire compassion and empathy for those who have a different life experience than you, and for people to find their shared humanity in different experiences. This might sound like an aside, but I study fat liberation and wrote my graduate research on the topic, and in all my years of reading and such, what I kept noticing was how much overlap there is in those who write from a fat perspective / those who are writing from a trans perspective, and then there are fat/trans writers out there speaking to that overlap! Learning about trans experiences (and my related privilege as a cis person) was incredibly accessible to me bc of my experience as a fat person. I don't HAVE to be both things to write about something that might apply to both communities. And that is what I keep thinking about with gaylors pointing at all of the "forbidden love, hidden love, etc etc" content is like, just because Taylor has an experience that feels SIMILAR to being a closeted queer person does not mean that she HAS to be one. Ughhhhhh!!! Anyway, thank you yet again for keeping the basics of journalism, criticism, and general art engagement alive & well here 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 << and a shout out to Lizard & her incredible testimonial!

The most interesting thing about this to me is... WHY DID THEY USE CNN AS THE RESPONSE MEDIUM? Are we preparing for election season...?👀👀👀

The NYT piece was so out of pocket on so many levels that it was honestly jarring. Have we, as a species, concluded that anyone who achieves this level of fame officially stops being a human being entirely and becomes our jointly-owned possession, an expensive piece of unique kitsch that each of us has every right to define? I would like to see a NYT op-ed on that issue. When does fame become so out of control that it literally transforms human flesh into a pubiic-domain hologram? It’s a serious question, given that no one who has achieved such untenable fame -- Michael Jackson, Princess Diana — lived to tell.

Thank you for your insights. Humans being treated as products, while AI becoming more packaged / perceived as humans: AI assistants with names “Alexa”, “Siri”, anime characters having fan clubs and concerts as “virtual idols” — very convenient and profitable— no need to negotiate contracts, no health benefits, insurance, labour dispute lawsuits, can dress and schedule the idol exactly as the studio and consumers want, increasingly manipulative and bizarre approach to connecting ourselves to the world around us. Last century we could still distinguish virtual reality and idols from ourselves, e.g. voice actors get awards for their performances, fans and album recordings. Now, it’s kind of creepy, even for a sci-fi tech geek like me… treat others as you want to be treated— but what if the others are not humans?! Who’s moulding who?? That’s why we subscribe to this channel— informative comic relief! take care.
