Welcome back to another episode of boots-on-the-ground journalism. The bone collector returns to serve a delicious meal: what, exactly, is the Taylor Swift origin story? We know the official narrative: plucky girl meets guitar, moves to Nashville, gets discovered at the Blue Bird Cafe and the rest is history. Was there more to it than that? If the recently resurfaced emails from Scott Swift's 2005 legal dispute with Taylor's former manager are to be taken seriously, then yes. We take an analytical lens to the essential role Taylor's hapless and bumbling, aw-shucks parents played in her rise to stardom & reevaluate her creative partnership with Scott Borchetta along the way too.

How am I so lucky to receive this amazing blessing!!

Sacred_sunflower

Listening now and agree Scott looks like a grifter con man! It’s the greasy hair!! 🤮

GW

This is one of your best episodes ever.

GW

I’m so intrigued to know how much Scott earns from the Taylor machine nowadays

NicoleWithoutTheH

This was so deliciously unhinged. Please go find the old interview of Taylor’s guitar teacher (the computer guy) and discuss it. Scott said some crazy stuff to him too.

This reminds me of this article: https://archive.ph/qT19R#selection-4643.0-4647.219 https://www.nydailynews.com/2015/01/10/exclusive-the-real-story-behind-taylor-swifts-guitar-legend-meet-the-computer-repairman-who-taught-the-pop-superstar-how-to-play/ "During this time, Ronnie was also trying to help build a website for Taylor, but says that Andrea Swift made that job difficult. “That was eventually what led me to part ways with Andrea, because she was just like a bull in a china shop,” he says. “If you didn’t drop what you were doing to work on whatever Taylor wanted, she would lose her mind.” And this too: “Her brother Austin, who was a little chubby at the time — he’s not that now — he wanted Taco Bell,” Ronnie recalls. “Taylor said, ‘I want Taco Bell, too.’ And her mother went out and got Taco Bell, but only gave it to Austin because she said, ‘nobody wants to see a fat pop star.’ She said that to Taylor. So Taylor had to eat a salad.”

Wow. Just wow. Claps for the Bone Collector.

Yana Tretyakova

I remember Taylor mentioning ingrid michaelson and coldplay as musical influences as well

This here. This is is the stuff. She's always been "money please"... haha! I'll always be a big fan and defend her talent, but it makes me sad (jealous?) how many talented people can't ever get half a chance at stardom or even mild success because their business-savvy Dad won't pay for everything. Yes, he didn't "buy" the record deal technically, but she never wouldn't gotten the deal without the massive amount of money, time and energy he spent, so to me, he did sorta buy her career. Also, can you imagine how much more those demos would've costed without pitch correction? She would've needed a million takes. It makes me appreciate more how artists who came from nothing, like Kurt Cobain, or like, Jewel, achieved success on their own. Also, Zack needs to see Back to the Future. It's a classic! Poor Austin.

Jane

Hi guys! When is the video version coming out?

Abby

So fitting that Scott wrote a whole email, in detail, lamenting the fact that he was labeled as talking too much… “Sir, you mean what you’re doing right now??”

Alex Varela

we have been served a delicious meal 🍽️ thank you snakes 🐍 🙇‍♀️

Realizing how unhinged her dad is, some things about Taylor make so much more sense. Especially her popping off on social media back in the day. Also, the level of dedication towards her goal. Her parents were going to make sure she was a star.

gabi

where's the video format 😭 absolutely love seeing the reactions

This whole thing left me with 2 questions: 1). With a Merrill Lynch daddy setting up trusts and such since day 1, I wonder how much wealthier Taylor is than we realize. None of the calculations of her net worth that I’ve seen have factored in any financial products that she (likely) owns and has accumulated extra money from. 2). This also left me with the impression that the Swift parents were wayyy more like “stage parents” than I previously thought. Like obviously Taylor loves what she does and is happy now, but I wonder how much of the initial push for her career was really of her own ambition. Lovelovelove the bone collecting and has left me with much to think about! Thank you snakes!

Abby

Wow after hearing that email, the lyrics in Mine must have destroyed Scott Swift

Monika

Will there be a video version of this? Not sure if this was stated anywhere. Thanks in advance!

Stav

The episode I've been waiting for. I knew Scott Swift needed an episode breakdown. I haven't even listened and I know that it's Pulizter caliber. BOOTS.

Swiftologist

soon!! we're recording more stuff today so I'll edit it after <3

Pamela F

The way I needed a dramatic reading of Scott Swift’s email by the Lizard herself

Jane

Of course take your time :)

Ally ❤️

“A careless man’s careful daughter…” when Zach said that it stopped me in my tracks! That and the tattoo reference in Ours… nary a lie was told by our Queen.

Ally ❤️

The statement about how other young stars were not cared for (Scott setting up trusts for Taylor) but rather were used up until they were mere shadows of themselves (Brittney, Justin)… it’s really sad. It’s a privilege to have had the parents Taylor had on this journey. Austin’s journey is so hard… I appreciated the light that you all shone on that as well. What a fantastic episode!!!

Ally ❤️

Jesus… no wonder we had an ed down the road…

This is genuinely one of my favourite episodes ever ❤️ It has huge resemblances to historical podcasts where they critically analyse the story later told, versus contemporary writings.. In this case of what is possibly the only known contemporary document from an insider at Taylor's initial rise we have. And I think you are right, it confirms there was no traditional neopotism at all, but a depressing amount of privilege needed to kickstart her career that 99% of the world doesn't have, regardless of talent. And as much as I love Taylor I still don't think she recognises that - as like seemingly 99% of privileged Hollywood elites they only ever seem to advocate for social/cultural causes, but never income inequality.

T

I feel a little bad for him. He did so much and had his own health scare. With no song🥺

gabi

is it going to be available to everyone? ❤️‍🩹

T

Yes. And not like the Carter family which is unspeakably sad.
