Taylor Swift's reputation era is much lauded as one of her most concise, aesthetically thematic, and sonically jarring eras. To no one's surprise, we concur with this estimation. However, much gets lost in hindsight. Though her career recovered fairly quickly, there were numerous hiccups in the roll-out to reputation that were actually....kind of a big deal. Alt-right sympathizer allegations?! Is the ACLU getting involved? It's a lot. We cover it all, from the conclusion of her trial to the iconic Instagram wipe, Look What You Made Me Do music video, and her brand new approach to being a pop star. There will be no further explanation. There will just be reputation!

After Apple responded to the “Apple Music letter” she allowed 1989 to be streamed on Apple Music- I only remember because it was a big part of my decision to subscribe to it- I don’t remember if the entire back catalogue was included though

Such a good episode! Regarding the Aryan goddess accusations, I think a very forgotten fact about history is that unfortunately H*tler used classical Greek sculptures etc as a blueprint for the “Aryan hero”, hence why that alt right guy brought it up. So it was unfair of that guy in the article to say that Taylor was “Athena reborn” as well, since he clearly did it for those reasons and to drive home his neo-Nazi agenda. It was also racist since classical Greek art depicts greek people and unique Greek features, not any white person, this was a harmful Nazi fabrication. Anything classically Greek was highly stylized and done at a time when men were mostly the models for sculptures, even female ones. They’re basically cartoonishly stylized and mostly based off of men. Taylor’s beauty doesn’t have to be compared to anything. Not a critique or anything just an observation about those comments by that crazy dude. Not to mention that classical Greek sculptures depicted a very greco-roman ancient ideal of beauty which included only Mediterranean people. The Nazis tried to whitewash this historical fact. No western/Nordic European looks classically Greek. the high rooted noses, and other specific features in those sculptures are only found in a few Mediterranean people. They were also not white marble when they were created, they were painted with more tan skin and dark hair. Why would they make sculptures of white people? Well, they wouldn’t. So it was incredibly racist of that alt right man to say that a clearly white person like Taylor is like Athena, but alas that was his goal.

As someone who was swift-neutral in 2017, you guys definitely have some nostalgia bias saying the album doesn't sound dated. While I like rep now, I can't help but think that pretty much every single song on it sounds like mid-2010s music. The trap beats, the club dance music drops, the hype group shouting with a beat build up on tiwwchnt, the lwymmd shining prechorus build up to a melodically disappointing chorus à la Ariana Grande (Problem and Focus), and certain lyrical choices are inseparably 2017 imo.

Reputation is easily my favorite album in her catalog. I have such clear and fond memories of this album. I remember exactly where I was when I heard LWYMMD and absolutely loving it. When the album finally came out I remember telling my partner this is truly my favorite thing she’s ever done. I do also remember it not being received very well and I defended it like it was my job. You can’t convince me an album that has LWYMMD, I Did Something Bad, Ready for It, So It Goes, and Getaway Car is a bad album, argue with the wall.

i just had a thought while watching this - the 2017/2018 vogue shoot has something reminiscent of the 1920‘s in some of the images and that immediately made me think of Clara Bow. Probably absolutely no deliberate connection at all but definitely someone Taylor has been able to relate to for a while and through the backlash of snakegate. and also, gagging at the „poetry“ commentary and us now getting a full on „poets“ album

Love your podcast but did want to add one little dissenting thought re: the defamation letter. It’s actually kind of absurd that anyone would expect TS to make loud, constant preemptive statements against white supremacy — like one of the most mainstream, people-pleasing celebrities of all time should be presumed to support the fringiest hatefreaks on earth unless she publicly denounces them on the constant? The article was a grossly cynical grab for attention, and intellectually dishonest to the core. As an attorney myself, I think Swift’s attorneys wrote a letter that was both necessary and correct, and that the resulting response was painfully corny. Statements against a public figure are simply subject to a different standard of proof in regard to slander and libel claims — those statements can still cross the line into actionable language and, IMO, a reasonable person could have determined that the article in question did cross that line. The response to that letter inaccurately presented the issue in a very superficial way, obviously spending much less time on legal analysis than was spent on feverishly attempting to manufacture something “clever” — and OOF., what a failed attempt it is. That try-hardest use of Swift’s lyrics (all but dropping a footnote to add a self-congratulatory “ooohhh burrrrn”) was so cringe I nearly dislocated my shoulder just hearing you quote it. It definitely gagged me — but only in the traditional sense of that word. Again, JMO.
