A few years ago, New York reformed its bail system. Since then, police and their close ally Mayor Eric Adams have successfully manipulated the public into believing that the reforms have been a disaster. Peter and Michael discuss how police have used taxpayer money to fund massive PR operations and control media narratives about crime.

OMG, another patreon ep I wish you could make public because I want to send it to every one of my friends immediately.

Emma Mendelson

Can’t wait to blast this at the NYPD and National guard crowding my subway station

Toni

Off topic for this episode (I'm about to listen!) Michael, would you consider covering I Can Make You Thin by Paul McKenna? Seems right up your street. Massive best seller, my favourite line being 'this is a short book, but as we can all agree, thin is good'....he has several spin off books including a hypnotic gastric band.

Sarah Figueras

Mike, you should turn on incognito mode on YouTube. saves my algorithm every time

Erika Salazar

Saw this notification when I woke up and thought “oh fabulous, gonna be livid today whilst unloading the dishwasher after breakfast.” 🥰🥰

Sarah Nora

I cackled at “podcasting with a CRIMINAL” 😂😂

Abigail Candelora

wait this is what eric adams sounds like 😭 m crying

Olivia Hodgson

I would recommend The Lincoln Hypothesis by Tim Ballard! He wrote it pre-Operation Underground Railroad and it’s super popular in Utah Mormonism. It hypothesizes that the reason Abraham Lincoln became an abolitionist and championed the Emancipation Proclamation was because he checked out a copy of the Book of Mormon from the Library of Congress. It’s such a trip and so full of inaccuracies, I’d highly recommend it for a bonus episode.

Alaina Uricheck

As a young, PR professional who has been unsuccessfully looking for a good job for over a year, what I’m hearing is that I should have compromised my morals and applied to work in police comms to find a job. Could have been an inside man, sabotaging their efforts😂😂😂

Sarah Howell

One word to describe this episode: bail reform

Fingerless

sounds like someone's gonna be waiting at the table of success

Karen Champ

I would like more episodes entitled “Michael/Peter Goes Off About the Issue that Most Pushes Their Buttons” please

Erika Salazar

Ah excellent. My kitchen is filthy, the toddler is covered in yogurt, and I’ve sent my spouse 15+ exclamation-filled texts 😂😂 thanks for another successful episode, guys.

Em Hill

I gotta stop listening to the bonus episodes at work cause I just crack up at my desk

Kevin Hengehold

Always a good time hearing people shit on eric adams. A couple of times Peter seemed to conflate getting arrested with committing a crime - is that a valid way to look at this? Not to impugn the fine reputation of the nypd, but given Michael's anecdote about his mom on a jury where the state's evidence was "dude, trust me bro," is it possible that maybe not everyone the nypd arrests committed a crime? p.s. how many people who get arrested actually get convicted rather than plead out? And how many of those who plead out did so because the DA threatened to stack charges on them if they went to trial?

Rachel Gross

Would you guys mind dropping some of your research links for reference?

Bran Lennox

Listening to the clips of Adams talking is reminding me of the "I'm Mr. Serling's right hand arm. Man." Interview

Olivia

“punched a few gals”? C’mon Peter, do better

kellyanne

this sounds more like a maintenance phase book than if books could kill tbh

Anna Jane

Please, please, please put this on your public podcast so we can share with people who need to hear it.

Leah N

Peeved that y'all didn't cover Chicago in this too because the amount of press going around *before* the pre-trial fairness act was even enacted was wild. It definitely impacted the most recent Cook County States Attorney primary election where a more moderate candidate eeked out a narrow win. Also even the observation that police can put on people can mess up their lives. Look up the case of Mohawk Johnson in Chicago who was arrested summer 2020 and had an ankle brace for 2 years that would constantly falsely alert and prevented him from working

Leah N

Also would love a whole episode about Nextdoor and that other neighborhood surveillance app. Those places are cesspools

Kevin Hengehold

Wasn't anthony diesposito the retired cop that came on 5-4 forever ago?

Chelsea

Yeah, I have to say, that was tasteless. Like what’s the joke and why are you laughing?

Toni

Yes, I listen to both podcasts and it would be at home on both.

Rebekah Hinton

I live in Upstate NY and I can tell you this thing of weaponzing bail reform on the right is a thing across the state. During the last 2 gubernatorial races there were constant ads shitting on bail reform using bullshit anecdotes and I got SO SICK of seeing them. Thanks for discussing this topic!

Faye

i live in chicago and the cops has been driving paddy wagons around to hand out parking tickets lmao not much to do with this podcast but i just think it’s funny

Violence Zack

"There is something in the American brain that is very susceptible to the fear of being the victim of crime." I feel like the people who have the most privilege are the most alarmist about being victimized. Is it just that they don't have to examine any uncomfortable issues if they don't want to? Or is it that people don't like feeling like they're better off than other people so they reframe themselves as being under attack? It feels like a trend I've noticed and it's always baffled me.

Kathleen’s a soberqueerdoe

In response to your “please Leave suggestions for bonus episodes in the comments:” Can you pretty pretty please do one of the TERF-Y books? Ie: irreversible damage by Abigail Shrier or “trans: when ideology meets reality” by Helen Joyce!

Matelda

Scared to listen to this because it will make me so angry

anarchopixie

Obligated, as a parasocial friend of Little Joel, to recommend his main channel Big Joel, some really great stuff on there. His videos making fun of Alain de Botton/School of Life are hilarious.

Lauren

per your request, a book suggestion: who moved my cheese by spencer johnson. I was eight or nine when it came out and didn’t understand why business guys were reading a kids’ book.

Tyler Svedin

100% Who Moved My Cheese! When I was a kid, I saw most of my teachers reading this book. I remember thinking it must be some grand thing that only the best and smartest of grown-ups would read. After becoming a teacher myself, I remembered it and looked into it. The vapid nothingness is genuinely hilarious.

Nicole Jenkinson

You should do a NYT vs Gaza episode as a follow up to the NYT vs trans people episode! A report just came out about how they’ve basically mandated bias in all of their coverage of Gaza

Rita Shah

Please make this ep available publicly. There are at least two classes I want to use it in!!

Erica Boisvert

Yeah, that rubbed me the wrong way, too.

Matelda

100% a big part of it is that privileged people cannot accept that their lives are easy & they're big stupid babies in pampers. If they're not conquering heroes then they must be the meekest of the meek who will inherited the earth for their struggle against the malevolent kids on their lawn

Nicole Jenkinson

It also was not one guy! It was multiple guys punching young women

Sarah Nora

I think it’s because the privileged have a lot more “stuff” to lose & also I think it’s the fear of the masses rising up against them. They’re outnumbered & they know it!

Ren

I’m always happy to see people talking thoughtfully about the injustice of bail. Thanks, Peter!

Ren

Once again requesting that you do a Christian bestseller like Wild at Heart!

sister himbo

boys PUH-LEASE i'm begging you to do an EP on anything by Gabor Maté. the chokehold he has on the mental health prosperity gospel is staggering

Ren

When I first got involved in bail reform organizing, we all talked about how it was a bipartisan issue that most people agreed on, which definitely matched up with my experience canvassing and talking to working and middle class voters at the door. Almost everyone who would actually talk to me (way more of the working class people than the middle class ones) agreed that it was unfair and Unamerican to have a system that privileges the rich in this way. But of course the Right has managed to make this a partisan issue too. They can make literally anything a partisan issue.

Matelda

We are a nation of cowards. I don't believe it's a universal thing. The American prison system is a world historic anomaly. Juicy crime stories may be ancient but these conscious lies have more causes. Most of the world is very different & even in oppressive societies, there are huge differences.

Kiki

The articles you mentioned about police rescuing ducks made me wonder if there were the same stories about my local police and there are. The most covered one is from 2015. So many news outlets reported on it but the best headline came from the Vancouver (BC) Police website… “Policing isn’t what it’s Quacked up to be”.

Heather

It’s worth noting that this police and PR/media relationship is really really old, like established within a few decades of police forces in America old. (If anyone wants notes, this is part of my dissertation! Hit me up.)

Jessica Hoffman

So who from Police PR pushed the ducklings down the storm drain??

Jessica Hoffman

$10 they were all given that book by a higher up

Dr. Flash

I remember seeing a reddit thread on the cop subreddit about what to do about America's crime rate being higher than other wealthy countries, and the responses were split 50/50 between people mentioning poverty and inequality as causes of crime (no remedies really given) and the other half blaming Reagan for closing the mental institutions. A huge number of cops (and Americans writ large) think the solution to crime is to have criminals, who they believe to be an intrinsic type of person, be locked in a cage forever away from us "normal" people.

K V

Came here to say this!!

S P

Suggestions! The recent NPR stuff re: Uri Berliner, and Abigail Shrier's Irreversible Damage and/or Bad Therapy

Jen M

Listening to Adams say “New York” after asking him about New York was exactly the “sponges!” scene from New Girl 😂

Rebecca Harris

My therapist keeps recommending his videos to me and every single time I'm like 'wow, this is really not for me and I don't understand how he's so popular'. I

sister himbo

if you're rich and also Gabor Maté's son, then they're very useful apparently

justine

One word to describe this episode: you guys are awesome and this information should be more widely spread.

Kim Kohrt

Every time I think I can’t loathe cops more … ACAB forever. Until the heat death of the universe & probably beyond.

Mara Drogan

This should go on main feed so I can share it with everyone I know. Really important info. Thank you

Erin OBrien

Thanks for this episode. I've lived in NYC for 20 years, and the way the local news reports on crime makes me insane. On top of parroting the cops and blaming most violent crime on bail reform, I saw a news story a few months ago where the local reporter interviewed a bunch of subway riders who were like, "I'm terrified to ride the trains!" and then the reporter said, "Crime on the subway is actually down, but riders still seem afraid" and like, why do you think that is, local reporter? But the consequences are that fear of crime elected Adams, an objectively terrible mayor, and now we're living through some expensive security theater with all the extra cops and National Guardsman (!) on the subway (mostly, I will note, at stations with high tourist traffic; I haven't seen a cop at my station in my mostly residential part of Brooklyn in a few weeks). Um, not to rant.

Harmony

Love you guys but “punched a few gals” felt so dismissive of the issue….. and I do think the targeted assaults on random women does deserve to be a news story

i need to hear peter's premium-feed thoughts on the police, trillbilly worker's party rants are no longer a sufficient amount of enraged catharsis for me 🤬

Rudy Vecchia-Zeitz

This needs to go on the main feed!! I think arguably one of your best, most important episodes. One note is you guys could’ve spent some time talking about how poverty is criminalized (shoplifting, “loitering”, sleeping on the subway / parks, etc).

Rudy Vecchia-Zeitz

Also how many poor and/or unhoused folks will be given a $1 bail and then their wallet will be taken away so if they have $1 they can’t even access it. Dollar Bail Brigade connects volunteers to bail out folks trapped in jail this way. People can sign up to volunteer here: http://www.thebronxfreedomfund.org/dollarbailbrigade

Xianhang Zhang

You can also go into your watch history and delete the offending video and it won't count for recommendations.

Erika Salazar

There are no less than 6 cops at my local Brooklyn station on the daily. Is your neighborhood majority non-Black perhaps?

E

Can someone who lives (and votes) in NYC *please* explain to me how Adams won? And why tf did he run as a Democrat?

Erin OBrien

No, actually, majority black neighborhood. I also only ride the subway twice a week usually, so it could just be they aren't there at the same times I am. But I've seen them all over Manhattan.

Miranda Hester

Especially given the fact that it wasn’t just a few women and I think that it ended up being more than one guy (although some were likely copycat). There were concerns about whether it was something linked to incel ideology that could potentially spread to other cities.

electric_claire

One thing that's wild about the backlash to NY's bail reform law that Peter didn't mention is that it began before the law even took effect. The NY Post published a few stories blaming the law for crime after it passed but before it took effect.

Miranda Hester

I second this. I joined to find out if people knew about something going on and dear lord the number of ‘there’s so much crime happening’ posts is really something.

JKS

This may be out of place here, but the last several episodes have made me think that there needs to be an episode about the NYT's Pamela Paul's horrible takes on everything.

Jacob King

My sister had a copy because it was required reading for a professional development course. I don’t think the instructor used it at all but someone designing the curriculum felt it necessary.

Jennifer Reft

I can tell you the media runs this playbook everywhere-see Illinois.

HeatherC

Adams is democratic when it comes to certain issues (prochoice, pro marriage equality, anti gun). He was actually trailing in the primaries for a while, I personally know no one who voted for him, but a few months before the votes crime spiked in NY so a former cop "tough on crime" pushed him to beat Andrew Yang (also maybe Yangs out of touch with NYC persona didn't help). Once he won that, he was almost assured mayor considering his opponent was Curtis siwa. Tl;Dr - clickbait headlines and fear won him the election

Anna Biotics

Totally agree! Violence against women is news worthy! Seriously guys? Did they even read the story? Some of the women who were attacked didn’t report initially, but once more people came out with stories the location of the attacks could be mapped out. So yes, put it in the news, thanks.

Anna Biotics

Like… how dare these men say violence against women isn’t news worthy???

Tahira Raza

I would love the notes!!

Tahira Raza

Yeah that was really odd and off-putting....a stellar episode overall and one of their best, but even a "few" women being punched is definitely a national news story. The dismissiveness + Michael agreeing with it was strange

Tahira Raza

Absolutely vital episode that I wish they would put on the main feed! I do disagree with Michael around cowardice/paranoia of imminent crime being a universal archaic thing. Of course distrust of the "other" has always existed to some extent, but this scared baby phenomenon is uniquely and all-too american of constantly thinking your house will be invaded at any moment unless you have an elaborate security system and 911 at your fingertips. Most Amerikans have been successfully propagandized

Summer N

Please make this one sharable! It's such a great explanation of cop-proganda and how the media fails when reporting on crime so that even reasonable people believe things that are patently untrue.

Kate Singh

I have no love for this Adams administration, but I wish you had contextualized that he was absolutely elected democratically in a ranked choice process, and favored by people living in the most heavily policed areas of nyc.

Krystal Taylor

Agreed! Also I'd love a spin off podcast.

Park

I’m not sure what this context would change about the analysis…other than an example of the power of misinformation

Storm

So here for the small jab at MFM

sam

lmao

Nat Waldman

Interesting tidbit about Eric Adams: during the trial in 2013 that led to stop-and-frisk being declared unconstitutional in New York City, Adams testified AGAINST stop-and-frisk, saying it disproportionately targeted communities of color. Both a liar and a hypocrite!

Elizabeth Elliott

I think American fear is based on the uneasy knowledge that we are where we shouldn’t be, generally. It’s why the wealthy fear the poor, etc. we know we’re unjustified and crime seems like justice. Nobody wants to get caught.

anarchopixie

Please could you do an episode on the patently bigoted, transphobic and unscientific Cass report in the UK? 👏🏻

Angela Rosin

Wait, are the ducks *not* getting rescued?

Leah Wilts

The London day release story gets worse; it turns out he faked the ticket, which was only uncovered months later (really?!! Htf could that happen!) and the lottery said they 'couldn't' reclaim the money. It's very unclear what really happened with that with entire situation.

Leah Wilts

Yes please! The conclusion about the complete unhelpfulness of hormone blockers is especially confusing and unclear.

Katie Herrmann

A training video I had to watch as a new hire at Home Depot showed an employee saving ducks. Even at 19, I remember thinking "nice try, Home Depot."

Shanna

Please make this episode available without Patreon! It’s just way too important! I wanna share it with everyone.

Elisabeth Handler

A question that might relates to law enforcement interest in maintaining the bail system: does any portion of the bail money stream fund police departments?

Daria

Humans are sort of wired to extrapolate the “sensationalized” anecdotes to more of the population because humans are bad at statistics and we ignore base rate information. If only the media reports included the more explanatory numbers as to the incidence rates of these cases, we may be in a completely different situation. I think that we need to pay more attention to how we think about the world around us… if only social psychologists could figure out how to actually educate the public, instead of writing airport books. Speaking of… I would love your take on “Originals” by Adam Grant

Park

It depends on the particular jurisdiction, but yes…the money of people who skip out on bail (ie pay bail and don’t show up to court) and people found guilty of their charges are distributed among the respective city/county…this usually includes the police department

Alli

I am down for more episodes covering shit Peter wants to talk about. This episode was 🤌!

Tyler

Clearly Peter doesn’t actually think women getting punched isn’t a bad thing. He was pointing out that a few instances of violence were blown out of proportion - as almost all are - and used to spin a narrative that crime is worse than it is and that bail reform is bad. In the context of their conversion, I feel like that was pretty obvious.

Nakia Neves

I all for deep dives into copaganda. Use those PR numbers in defund the police debates.

Jonas

You should put this episode up on the main feed. It’s so good and people need to hear it.

Miranda

Americans will do anything to stop crime except literally the most obvious thing, gun control.

Sam Franklin

Get this guy on On the Media

Tahira Raza

I am well aware lol. Again, my point was not that mistrust only exists in the U.S! However the level of paranoia is unparalleled. I'm Pakistani, and a lot of family has been robbed at gunpoint. A cousin was followed home from the bank. Some lived in houses with security guards posted, and still had break-ins. Almost all of them have moved to neighborhoods with much more extreme security now. With USians, the fear is unique because it is often unfounded and exaggerated

Amanda Martin Sandino

You know the real crime? That the Eurovision episode hasn’t come out yet. ;)

MeowMeow

It’s JEW-MAH-NEE Williams, you fucking fuck. What are you from Philly or something?

Alex

will a transcript of this episode be made available?

Katie

OMG, I dream of an Adam Grant episode. I've never read his books, but his Twitter feed of banal, declarative life advice, even though one of his top posts is "certainty is not a sign of credibility," is driving me bonkers. My daughter has ADHD in a way that makes her an emotional mess, so I need detailed advice from credible psychological reseach, very, very badly. But if his books are like his Twitter, he ain't it.

Danielle

Please share this on the main feed!!

anarchopixie

Because all the headlines worded it that way and spouted faux-concern for trans kids as their primary interest. In reality, it removes access to healthcare for trans people, suggests that the age of consent for transition should be 25 and advocates for kids not being allowed to undergo social transition - such as getting a haircut - without consulting their doctor. It is terrifying. Cass didn't have a single trans person on the board of this report, but worked with conversion therapists (who failed to state their conflict of interest), people from DeSantis' team, and quoted transphobic youtube channels as evidence. The whole thing is a disturbing joke, deeply upsetting.

Hayden Smith

Could you guys cover social security and the inequalities it perpetuates?

Dominic Renaud

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts tha locking up the whole world outside of their little cul-de-sac neighbourhoods is probably something the people who worry about crime deep down want more than anything

Tyler Svedin

OMG! Please do anything by Leil Lowndes. She’s unhinged, but not too overtly evil. Could be a bit of a lighter, funny episode.

Lara Flaute

A police rescue baby ducklings story just showed up on my local stories 😂

UnknownArtist

I would love to see these media literacy episodes, like this one, and the one on Trans coverage, on the main feed. Y’all do such a good job of explaining these tactics. Thanks for keeping me entertained and enraged 😂

Violeta

There’s no way these ducks are just having THIS MANY accidents themselves.

Violeta

That is absolutely debatable given there was no education campaign about ranked choice voting before the election. I know multiple people who thought they had to rank everyone running!

Violeta

They introduced a new way to vote (ranked choice voting) without any education campaign on how to do it properly. Progressives in NY pushed hard for one to no avail—they couldn’t get funding. I know multiple (smart!) people who thought they were supposed to rank everyone running, instead of who you actually want to win/vote for. To muddy all this there were several very late breaking scandals w/top progressives that were blown up in the media, regardless of their actual severity. Additionally, we have no way to recall mayors in NY, and afaik there’s no change in that. There’s a separate issue of whether he’s actually eligible to be the mayor, as it seems there was no enforcement of the qualifications. His primary address was in New Jersey, and he used his son’s apartment address as his address instead (there’s old interviews where it’s clearly not his apartment). Press kinda went ‘that’s weird’ at the time but none of them pushed it with the city or elections board.

Violeta

That’s a good point—as soon as he started running the media ran w/his narrative of an unsafe NYC, even tho crime was historically low. It’s still skewing perception.

Violeta

Seriously, I would not put it past police to endanger animals for a propaganda push.

Violeta

Yes please!!

Violeta

Yeah it sounded to flippant. I got where they were coming from tho—that whole thing was clearly just happening in a specific area and/or by one person, and that women aren’t frequently randomly assaulted in NYC is what made it an outlier. I think it would have been better to point out that it happened despite Adams pushing even more money into NYPD, tho, who clearly don’t keep us safe.

Violeta

I wish you’d mentioned how Adams is bilking NYC coffers to give NYPD even more money even after raising their budget. These crimes they’re blaming on bail reform are happening while NYPD is flush. Please make this episode public!

Jeanne H-B

Hypnotic gastric band?! Jeezum Crow.

Gillian Rosheuvel

The PR work police departments do is really underreported for obvious reasons. I am glad to see that there's been more conversation about the copaganda that is TV procedurals.

Olivia Mayer

It's kinda similar to how so many people hate vegans, I reckon..

Olivia Mayer

While you're at it, could you maybe also release Are The Straights Ok? One of my all-time favourite podcasts ever (just hilarious) - and I want to be able to discuss it with more people - please!!!

Olivia Mayer

It's very much like the US here in Australia tho, in this regard - elections have been won on creating and then channeling unfounded, unsubstantiated fears of refugees and gangs and the like, with the active help of the mainstream media, of course.

Carly Ann Braun

Is this Citations Needed now? 😂 Loved the episode haha

hey_boo

How do ducks survive without cops?!

Grace

Excellent episode!! Would love to share this one from the main feed!

Edie

unrelated to the episode... can you share how ya'll know each other?... PLEASE. You share in maintenance phase, maybe because this is bro time it's not top of mind but I'm interested.

Toni

I'd LOVE to watch an episode of you guys doing the podcast where we can see you. Especially when you're having a laugh together.

Tim Peierls

Just after I listened to this episode, Newsday obligingly posted "Wandering ducklings plucked from storm drain, with help from Suffolk police".

Emma Erdahl

"get to expense your Quiznos"

Shannon Ruhl

Okay not related at all. But would love for y'all to cover Unreasonable Hospitality...

Jason Wilkins

Yes, please, do Unreasonable Hospitality. I am currently being forced to read this book at work, because running a restaurant for rich people is EXACTLY like running a public library, right?

Matt Killmon

This is such a mood; my ex-partner is struggling with her very emotional daughter who was recently diagnosed with ADHD and her psych recommended my ex-partner read "Scattered Minds" by Gabor Mate, and the more she's talked about it with me the more I have felt like "Man, I wish Mike and Peter would look into this book." Maybe it's old and niche enough it's not a good fit for the podcast, but their BS detectors + research abilities sure would be welcome.

Skwirrel76

Look, am I the only one that now wants a Peter/Michael Elden Ring episode?

M

How much you wanna bet that police PR people had a hand in the making of that 'cop cuties, cute and on duty' song from the rookie?

Lauren Kay

Hello Mike and to a lesser extent Peter (sorry). Would you consider an exhausting takedown on effective altruism in so-called development? Would you also consider a collaboration with Behind the Bastards/It Could Happen Here? The crew there did an episode on EA. Lastly, are you still writing long-form, Mike? I live in the U-District and am involved in the migrant camp. We need help!

Ann

Why are cops on the pro gun side? It makes their job so dangerous.

Koen de Regt

Hi guys, love your show. Do you know the writer Rutger Bregman and his book Humankind? It’s a terrible but hugely influential book about how people are inherently good and it’s only media, evil corporations and other actors that make us believe that humans are bad. It’s soooo bad. A Dutch syndicate of smart people actually did a 10 (!) part debunking series of it on YouTube (look for ‘Snijtafel’ and the Dutch title of the blok ‘Meeste mensen deugen’). But that’s of course all in Dutch. I’d love to hear you take on this book. Because it’s still selling like hot cakes. As is its successor. And it’s corrupting minds of good people everywhere.

Abi Lambert

I would love if you guys dissected Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari.

JGoolsbee

If Books Could Kill. The podcast where, in a word, if books could kill.

JGoolsbee

Tagline problem solved.

Mel Gough

I don’t understand how Eric Adams ever got elected

Becky Karush

Haidt’s new book seems like an episode candidate. He’ll keep the show running for years.

M

I actually totally would love that, I watched my boyfriend play elden ring for ages and it's fun to watch but I still don't really get it 😅

Barbara McAdams

I’m confused what’s going on with this Patreon account? I still only see the Eric Adams episode and yet there are new episodes in the regular podcast feed. Anyone else having this or is it something I’m doing wrong? It doesn’t make sense to pay for Patreon when the episodes aren’t here before they hit the podcast feed right?

Kazoolhu

The episodes on Patreon are "bonus", not available on the regular feed. Hope that helps

baby seal

My favorite murder gals are cops

Daniel Cunningham

I watched The Fugitive tonight almost entirely because Michael referenced a scene in which Tommy Lee Jones says "fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, fuck you," and I had a vague memory of that scene. But that line is not from The Fugitive or delivered by Tommy Lee Jones, it's from Half Baked. I'm not complaining; The Fugitive is a pretty hilarious 90s action movie that has the virtue of actually pretty realistically portraying how bad cops are at their jobs and what a gigantic amount of public resources they pour into doing things that are either unnecessary or harmful.

Polly

Just in time for DLC too! Need their prediction on LORE. (Hopefully Michael finally read those item descriptions.)

Blueasinbird

Super pissed off to read about a shoplifting bill they're trying to pass in Oklahoma today and didn't know where else to gripe about it.: "Bill to charge more shoplifting offenses as felonies in limbo with three weeks to go in the legislative session... ***Claiming a spike in theft***, lawmakers in both chambers approved versions of Senate Bill 1450, which would lower the felony theft threshold from $1,000 to $500. The bill would also increase the theft aggregation period from 90 days to one year and deputize several retail theft officers under the Attorney General’s office. " Just utterly ridiculous and horrible.

Charles Somerville

It’s always fascinating how conservative will have the mindset of “a starving person stealing food for their family” is a just reason to steal food until they have to ignore shoplifting

Dominique

On episode ideas: I still don’t understand the tax changes that came during the F-ing Trump years, in relation to small business expenses. Like, I guess our tiny consulting and writing business is “qualified” or something. I might have that term wrong. But I don’t know the in-group tax language any longer and so many of my friends with independent businesses have problems now because we have to try to learn a whole new set of rules. It’s just a schedule C and a 1040 form where we take the standard deductions instead of schedule A now. I learned that much. But my husband doesn’t know how to classify equipment purchased because I’m disabled and now I learned husbands and wives have to open their own separate practices for freaking home businesses and track separate schedule C expenses. What if we go to a meeting together? Are we a Partnership now?! Is there a book or an IRS law to read/comprehend/debunk? Well, anyway, none of this is sexy. I found myself trying to translate the tax law document at the irs.gov site, and when I startled awake after apparently passing out… I realized I couldn’t make heads or tails of it. It’s truly hurting my brain and soul, however. I don’t know if I have to refile previous years. I don’t even have the bandwidth to do what we are already doing very well. This is a lot of anxiety to throw at people. We can’t afford an outside accountant. Their irs guide for small businesses on the changes doesn’t load for me on my browser. Is it age and I had figured this out as a youngster so now my brain says no; life is too short? Do others have unsaid issues they’re silently grinning and bearing? I mean, like we are a tiny business making maybe a thousand extra bucks a month. And sometimes I’m too sick to work at all, so… This is not some big enterprise here. Nor do we intend to be.

Trevor Bradley

I noticed the teaser for Columbia out but no Mile High club episode yet. Checking in if this is an error or was deliberate!

Jonathan Beller

Why do police even care about this? Would think what happens after an arrest is outside their purview. Is it that they’re annoyed at the idea someone they arrested might become “their problem” again?

erinliz

For context, my entire public relations firm is also 42 people

Miriam Reid

Hilarious that My Favorite Murder was brought up in this episode - that's actually how I found this podcast! Karen's a listener 😂

Elizabeth Hendler

The regular feed is free, the bonus episodes are on Patreon or Apple pay.

ES

Are we just gonna gloss over the fact that the drone killed one of those ducklings?

Billy Hanisee

This is my favorite episode of If Books Could Kill because they finally did a story about the person Peter is impersonating when he’s doing a voice.

First half of the episode - haha this is dumb - second half of the episode - oh dear oh no ohhhh shit...

cr0nes

If that was true, they wouldn't let you post this.

I am a civil servant in upstate New York. My colleagues whose children are correction officers are against bail reform because, “their kid needs a job (or overtime)”. Shame.

Vanessa

Is there anyway to pay for a single episode. I want to share this with a friend with whom I have regular arguments about bail reform.

Emmalee

I can't believe Mike predicted Trump blaming the Jan 29th DC plane crash on DEI 😭

Acree Macam

Just echoing that it would be great to have a way of sharing this episode with others — I’m leading a group study on copaganda and would LOVE to be able to have folks listen to this. Great, great ep. Thanks for doing it

Same!

Fair Use Advocate

Unapologetically re-raising the comments section of this year-old post... God, every politician in the last century is playing 2 truths and 1 lie like "Something is wrong with our criminal justice system. Convicted criminals are being released onto the streets so they can commit again. Something clearly isn't working and it's only causing further harm to the most vulnerable of our communities." Man, they're so close...

Late reply, but if I had to guess, maybe it's because bail = money for the city/law enforcement. It could also be an egotistic thing. Like "We, the cops, are the good guys, who throw bad guys in jail. We can't let the bad guys get away!" Cops probably view their positions as a moral thing, like they can do no wrong because of their job description alone. Kind of like priests and other positions of power, such as doctors or something. Like holding that office alone is enough to be virtuous by default. Disagreements with that idea are threats to the officers' identities and labels them as "bad" (in their minds). I'm just speculating though.

Now that we’re just 8-ish weeks away from saying goodbye to him, relistening

Danielle De Lano

Sometimes I can’t believe Eric Adams is real.

Vazzaroth's Verbosity

Dude just hearing people invoke the Bible in hearings like this sound exactly like someone coming up on public stage in a serious meeting and going "As was written in the Warhammer 40K rulebook, 5th edition, as we all know, the FLAMER TEMPLATE MUST be placed no more than 8 INCHES above the table when measuring! Are you familiar with this rule, Chairman?"

Deleathers

That's oddly specific.
