Peggy Noonan is such an asshole. When I met her like 20 years ago she tried to tell a group of us that P Diddy was really good in his recent musical/singing performance on Broadway.

The Mad Jay Woman

This is how I know I’m a late GenXer because my “We were NEVER into ___” was Vanilla Ice 🙄 You wore that t-shirt every other day, Summer

Irene

legit thought Mike's "Prêt à Manger" the other week was intentional troll of denouement crew 😂

Eileen Murray

In 1990 someone gave me "What I Saw at the Revolution" as a high school graduation gift because they knew I wanted to be "a writer". (That was the *only* thing they knew about me. Apparently!)

SilentS

Is this episode not showing up in the RSS feed for anyone else? 😥

sarah

It's not showing up for me either. It took a search on the app or viewing patreon's website.

Jacob Dokos

Same for me. I'm hoping it shows up after a few hours

Hannah Disch

It's not showing up for me either.

Grace Cai

I am giddy w excitement

Jack

Genuine question, do Brits say Mario and Taco wrong? Never noticed any difference in how they say it and how Americans do.

Adam Sarvana

Peggy Noonan used to be a great example of the kind of conservative writer who would occasionally write about some Republican’s uncouth behavior and then get cited by Democratic voters. “See, even Peggy Noonan gets it! They’re not all bad - we really can return to civility if we just listen to people like Peggy Noonan, who debates in good faith!” There’s just no rhetorical or intellectual upside to that kind of thing. It’s the difference between performative civility and a politics of actually valuing human dignity and social variety.

Eliza B

I didn’t know I needed to hear Peter doing a bad French accent this morning 😂😂😂

drop everything and enjoy the new IBCK? it'd be irresponsible not to!!!

Jon

I thought it was trolling the article he was citing! I mean, the man lived in London, so he’s gotta know about Pret.

Jon

btw Mike, I think the article you read for the “but her e-mails!” episode was by Christopher Hitchens. It’s wild that there’s two pieces of commentary titled “The Case Against Hillary Clinton”, tho.

TradescantiaHaven

We absolutely need that bonus episode about conservatives who constantly brag about dodging taxes supposedly being targeted by the IRS.

Lauren

lol this is amazing

Lucy Smyth

Peter doing his best impersonation of the chef in The Little Mermaid. Now I demand a rendition of Le Poisson.

I'm comforted by the fact that Michael also has a problematic grandmother

Isn't Peter from New York? Pret basically on every NYC street. I only lived there 2 years and know how people pronounce it. But that's just the thing with pronunciation. There's the original word from the original language and then there's how most people from a certain area pronounce it. Let's go with like Bayer aspirin, famous Nazi aspirin brand, everyone I know in Ohio would say the pronunciation is like the animal 🐻 but other Americans apparently pronounce it Bay-er yet the original German pronunciation is like buy-er. Yes pronunciation is important so we all understand each other but it's insane to think people know how to pronounce your unknown town or random local business name or that there isn't another language or dialect that pronounces it differently. I also get a flash of anger when people don't pronounce Ashtabula or Cuyahoga the way I grew up hearing all the time, but have to check myself. That being said Michaels pronunciation was ridiculous 😆 https://www.distractify.com/p/things-americans-mispronounce

Tack-o, vit-a-mins, pee-doh-file, it never ends.

Seth

Peggy Noonan would always talk is the most haughty, breathy, WASP-y voice on the Sunday shows and pretend like she was always just so sad about how uncouth everyone was. Then Trump showed up and she just disappeared when the one person who perfectly matched the evil politicians she made up in her mind.

Cory Bradfield

What you're looking for in the intro is "Peggy Drunk by Noon-an" (credit will menaker).

Annabel B

Especially with Kathy Hochul's targeted mask ban proposal, I'm a bit disappointed that you guys only listed identity concealment as a reason for these protestors being masked. COVID-19 is absolutely still a risk and a major reason (amongst prevention of other virus and contagion spread) that many, many people and protestors choose to continue masking.

Michael Hashizume

"The biggest good thing since 9/11" made me laugh out loud. What a bizarre turn of phrase

John W

I'm getting that Steve Buscemi hello fellow kids vibe here....

Caspar

They all agree with him, both when it comes to politics and being a cruel asshole, they just don't like how open he is about it.

Evan

Did known gamer Michael Hobbes lie when he claimed not to know what pokemen are? It would be irresponsible not to speculate...

Jacob Dokos

Mine is showing up now. It just took a few hours

conancat

PokeMEN? Shit I want to know too 😂

Sarah S

Not just grandmas! I have heard so many "liberal" people make assumptions about neighborhoods based on the race and ethnicity of the residents. They're definitely not checking the crime stats, just making wild assumptions.

Kathleen denomy

So great to hear from you guys. It feels like a long time but worth the wait.

Emily

Guys. What’s a pundit ?

i also ran into peggy in an LA grocery store one time and i tried to compliment her seeming discretion against speculative journalism, but she scoffed at me and said something about "truly a national loss", and then she just up and tried walking out with a fistful of like fifteen Milky Way bars while shouting at the cashier about it being "irresponsible not to" or something. smh

Meg

and now that you mentioned Frasier, pls something on Kelsey Grammar

Moonlight

I’m very surprised by the massive reactions of laughter and even « disgust » (someone used that word in the comments) to Michael pronunciation of « Prêt à manger ». I’m French, born and raised in Paris, and I couldn’t care less (honestly, I didn’t understand what he said the first time, I had to listen again to catch it. But it took me 2 months to understand a joke in the « 5 love langages » episode...). I couldn’t care less, maybe because my family comes from the Middle East and I was extra sensitive, when I was young, when French people would react to my parent’s way of speaking French? Maybe also because it was shown that modern French was reformed so that it could exactly produce this: a disgust reaction. Disgust for the people who do not have a good grasp on all its complexities, and social respect for anyone who could show how they master it. It was reformed with a classist, parisian and patriarchal mindset. When this British brand named itself with a French sentence, it did it very deliberatly, so that this French prestige is reflected back to the brand and it attracts a very specific kind of clientèle (and this use of a French sentence means even more, coming from a country that still has an institutionalized aristocracy and a long history of war and rivalry with France). This disgust v. respect reaction was deliberatly built in the modern French language, so that you could instantly distinguish the socialy respectable from the socialy awkward and unfit. Michael, you're good.

Meggie Orgain

The only reason I know how to pronounce “Prêt à manger” is because it’s in a lyric of a song from Six, the musical.

"A free Hamilton's Hall, from the window to the wall" - Peggy Noonan

Sarah

I'm a bit disappointed that y'all concluded that the only reason for the masks during the university protests was for protection against people who disagreed, when it also very much was against COVID and to show care for those in the community who don't want to catch it.

Shalma Movassaghi

It doesn’t really matter. Protest history before COVID has always proven the need for face coverings, which is what they hit on. COVID is just an added, supplemental reason.

Shalma Movassaghi

Haha! Problematic grandmothers, the great equalizer.

Claire Gunter

I listened to the on the car but had to stop because I was laughing too hard.

Michelle Sanders

Fun IRS story. When I worked for the IRS as a tax law representative in 2013 I got a call from a taxpayer and part of her bitter opening statement was, "And I'm a Christian if that makes a difference." And at the time I was both deconstructing in the faith I'd been raised in and vaguely aware of the conspiracy theory. I was like, "I'm a Christian too... Do you have any tax law questions I can help you with?" The next FY our budget had been drastically cut and my office got an involuntary unpaid day off every two weeks for several months. My understanding at the time was that it was a direct result of a political attack on the IRS due to the conspiracy theories. But it may have just been a tea party ideas in the FY12 budget cycle.

frankie

I disagree strongly that it doesn't matter, when the governor of New York is talking about banning masks and tying them to criminality with her rhetoric, and N. Carolina just had a push to ban masks for the same reason that thankfully their governor vetoed. We really really need to emphasize the importance of protecting mask wearing as a health measure, esp. since for disabled ppl like me it's pretty much the only health measure we have left in public spaces.

Sarah

This. And masking was so heavily encouraged in university encampments very much because of COVID protection and protection of both disabled people in that community and people who didn't want to become disabled because of COVID. The "masks as protection from ID" is a partial reason, but citing it as the only reason falls into the framing being used by politicians as an excuse to ban masking.

amloth

my mom is sooo in love with Peter literally everytime i listen with her she’s like “sigh why can’t I meet a man like him”

Sheryl

The British say words borrowed from Spanish much worse than the Americans do. I’m a Cuban-British American and my British cousins can’t even Cuba without sounding colonial.

Leo Puppytime

Brilliant stuff. Y’all make me happy.

rach

I was coming to the comments to say the same thing! The whole reason medical masks are being used instead of generic face coverings is to protect the health of the campers! If they get sick, they can’t keep up the action. The anti surveillance aspects is the bonus!

Patrick Farabaugh

I’m so proud of those kids for not talking with the media. It’s a hard lesson we had to learn from past movements

TMac

Michael, re Pret a Manger, it's just that us You're Wrong About stans have never forgiven you for deNOWment.

Violence Zack

*insert sexy magikarp photo here*

Shalma Movassaghi

The governor of New York isn't basing his stances on the hosts of a leftist podcast forgetting to mention a detail.

Shalma Movassaghi

I completely agree that wearing masks as a health measure should be enforced. I just don't think Michael forgetting to mention it is intentional or harmful here in any way.

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

I don't know if you guys have seen the tweet going around about being a kid who suspects that most of the adults are dumb and then growing up and realizing you were right, but that is how this podcast makes me feel about the world.

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

I've seen both English and American reactions around this. I think both countries feel a need to position themselves as, I don't know, Francophile, or knowledgeable about France, or maybe even originating from France because it has such a strong national PR campaign about being a cradle of art, culture, civilization. We're scraping for cultural legitimacy by policing each other about French things. I was an exchange student for a year in my teens in Normandy and it made me feel some kind of way about that whole narrative. Thank you for your knowledgeable and kindly response to the mild Pret A Manger kerfuffle, I learned things that before I only felt queasily in the pit of my stomach!

Andrew Bryson

I don't know this particular tweet, but it reminds me of one from 2020-21 I vibed with that was like "This pandemic has been devastating for my decades-long effort to shed my teenage belief that everyone around me is an idiot"

Breann

Episode idea: current literacy statics, general feelings/attitudes towards book bans, + politics in our swing states

Penelope Hays

Wondering if you guys wanna tackle the current moral panic, with inevitable corresponding legislation surge, around "The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness", by Jonathan Haidt. Or Haidt's "The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure"... I haven't read, but sounds like the same set of underlying assumptions.

Penelope Hays

Yes... not sure current status, but on 6/15 NY Gov Kathy Hochul said she'd 'consider reinstituting a prepandemic ban on wearing masks on the subway'.. saying in a news conference that state officials would “not tolerate individuals using masks to evade being responsible for criminal or threatening behavior.”' This while many people currently wear masks on the subway and elsewhere, not threatening anyone, obviously to protect health of themselves or others, and many are still confined to their homes due to continued threat of covid. Life and public spaces aren't just for the able bodied.

Kate Mikell

The Coddling of the American Mind was a main feed episode back in March of 2023, if you haven’t listened to it yet!

Laura L

I learned Brits say tack-o from the infamous Mexican Week episode of GBBO *shudders*

Laura L

I am less than a year older than Michael, and the whole "We were NEVER into New Kids on the Block" phase was totally real!

Mandi Brehm

You’re Wrong About just released an episode influenced by The Anxious Generation today!

frankie

nobody said it was? just that it is disappointing and it does matter

Michaela

I’m regards to doxxing Gaza-solidarity protesters, one of my good friends was involved in activism on Harvard’s campus. In addition to the bus with peoples pictures (which dozed people who put out an initial letter in solidarity with Palestine) they said that they found these students’ addresses and would show up to to their homes. So people had to be escorted home by their friends for safety. Just to add to the ridiculous double standard.

Malia Hee

Could you please look into the Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt?? Would love some coverage about the moral panic concerning kids and access to the internet and social media!!

Nicole McGrath-Patti

I just emailed them about this too, I was reading this and realized ahh this is the Coddling of the American Mind guy! Parents are panicking about this book in my neck of the woods - Midwestern US suburbia.

Kazoolhu

On the other hand, I wouldn't call what they cooked a taco either. Did you see the one where Paul Hollywood says "a churros", like it's a singular Greek word? Oops, bake-off tangent

Morgan EP

Yes absolutely I was about to email to suggest this guys newest freak out boom also! Y'all gotta do it from what I've heard the data this book relies on is more then ten years old when drawing conclusions about brand new social phenomenon. It's another chapter in the one book theory

lat1170

What happened to the main feed episode for June?

lat1170

Thanks for the update!

ES

Omg PLEASE I need a Maintenance Phase x If Books Could Kill crossover episode for A Hunter-Gatherer’s Guide to the 21st Century. There was some light transphobia pretty early on, and now we’ve graduated to fluoride, sunscreen, and vitamin D trutherism!! I’m not even a third of the way in.

ES

“CALLOUSES ARE NATURE’S SHOES.”

ES

Oh yummy, we got some casual anti-semitism!

Guliya

I recommend Rob Handerson’s Troubled!

Jordan McFadden

I just wanted to hop on here and say how much I appreciate this podcast. It is such an enjoyable listen on my morning commute--thanks guys!

ES

DUDE IT’S THE EVERGREEN STATE GUY!!!!!! The authors are a married couple, both professors, and the man is the guy you talked about in the dumb campus controversies episode who said it was racist to ask white students to leave campus for the day of absence. PLEASE DO THIS BOOK!!!!

ES

“PORN CAUSES SEXUAL AUTISM.”

Alison Hunt

I saw a quote once that said when someone mispronounces a word, they probably learned it from reading, and that's not a bad thing!

Mickey Looney

That’s what my mom always told me “Never make fun of someone for mispronouncing a word, cause it just means they’re well-read”

Lemmy Henry

Well at least we know where the r is in integral…

DiscoDame

New subscriber. Just wanted to throw out a suggestion for "Think and Grow Rich". A book from the 30s about achieving your goals in 13 steps. I don't actually know if there is a lot there to comment on, but step 10 "The Mystery of Sex Transmutation" sounds interesting.

Anh Nguyen

I'd love an episode on "The Almost Nearly Perfect People: The Truth About the Nordic Miracle", if only to be a vehicle for Mike's Denmark slander and stories of his life in Scandinavia. It is still around in airports (saw it at Copenhagen airport just this summer) despite being published in 2014

Greg0692

FYI, somebody on the Discord is pretending to be Peter and trying to get people in a cryptocurrency scam.

Maggie

could you guys do an episode breaking down the Red Scare Podcast?? everything i know about them has been like a weird game of telephone im playing against my will (i don’t think they have a book but it could still make a good bonus ep?)

Lewis Emmett

This episode is already killing me because this pundit has the same surname as me. I'm Australian and at least can't be related to her.

Elsie 3

Putting in a request for Bridges Out Of Poverty by Ruby Payne…so problematic and had such a hold on the education & education nonprofit sector for so long.

Meg

The reason the British ‘know’ how to pronounce Pret à Porter is only because it’s a sandwich store!

M

another huge reason folks at campus encampments and protests were masking was because of the ongoing covid pandemic! the crossover of Palestinian liberation and disability justice is so important.

Anna Jahns

When Peter said “big scandal in 2013” I immediately assumed it was going to be the tan suit

Isabel

the disgust at how Brits say filet made me audibly yell "yeah!" bc truly how dare they judge anyone for pronunciation

Benjamin Sagan

Somehow I had no memory of this, thank you for the link lol

Sophia

Yes please!

Chuck Lavazzi

Someone who can't get an honest job, it would seem.

Chuck Lavazzi

I hear Noonan has a book coming out about what a swell guy Trump is. Title: The Triumph of the Shill.

Chuck Lavazzi

Not this Democratic voter. Noonan has, in my view, been a vacuous hustler from the get-go.

Thom

I just read the Peggy Noonan episode. I wondered why they didn’t mention one of the columns that she wrote in the period after 9/11. She apparently came across some Middle Eastern-looking tourists taking pictures of tall buildings and wondered why nobody was arresting them!

fig leaf

oh THAT'S where that's from?!?!

ES

Patreon doesn’t show me which comment you’re replying to, but yes, the quotes are from this stupid book. They don’t address the day of absence controversy in the book (except to complain about how they “had to” leave the campus they “loved” because The Youths Are Woke), but I googled it and it is this same guy.

Diann Chea

Protestors are masking also because COVID is still a threat.

Shannon Ruhl

no he did not just "cosmic background microwave radiation" DED

Alex

Just want to shout out Jamelle Bouie, who is an op-ed columnist does exactly what Peter was pining for around 30 min. Always provides both incisive commentary and appropriate historical context with significantly more details than any of his contemporaries.

Matt

The real reason Frank Vandersloot probably got audited is that he runs a pyramid scheme called Melaleuca.
