IDEA SCOOP IDEA SCOOP

Jethro Mojave

They call it CBS because every time I turn it on I know I’m going to “C” some BS! Come on guys it was right there

Rosemarie Cawkwell

I'm going to enjoy this while I have a post-meeting nap.

Ben Robinson

All this talk of scoops is giving me a craving for ice cream

Ben Robinson

Walking up to Bari Weiss in an ice cream van and asking for a 99 with 2 scoops of right-wing sane washing and one scoop of chastising the left

Julie A

Last week a member of the government here (France) asked a journalist if he had condemned Hamas in return of his question about a guy who was arrested yelling enough with blacks and arabs shooting an air rifle at black and brown kids (he wanted to know if she aknowledged and condemned the racist motivation of the attack). Those racist reactionary freaks should thank Hamas, honestly.. It's been their main or only card played in the last years...

Doran Teverovsky

Finding out now that Michael has the same YouTube algorithm as me

Josh Throckmorton

Board game hobbyist here: solving Connect Four is a dumb waste of time. No complaints on the take 🫡

Andy HL

Scoops Ahoy!

Lynn

"I am creating trust, by being not at all trustworthy. That seems to be what the public wants. " -Bari, probably

Pascale Andor

The amount of time “scoop” was said. Now I want ice cream.

Matt Killmon

Absolute cowardice to not play the theme music a second time, after the mid-episode stinger.

Rithya Kunnawalkam Elayavalli

I went to go look up Tony the cbs anchor guy, just to know what he looks like, after Peter said they want to show a person's dumbass thoughts presented on TV but a handsome guy... And damn! That is unfortunately a face straight outta central casting.

Brennan Artzt

When Michael came up with Cynical Bull Shit for CBS dodging problematic ideas I did cheer cheer like a sports dad for their sports son, hitting the big ball and scoring the winning home run.

Meryl Kossmeyer

Someone solved connect 4 by *checks notes* …connecting 4.

Meryl Kossmeyer

Waiting on tenterhooks for their follow up video, solving tic tac toe.

Jamie Fritz

Potemkin news channel is an all time great.

Alien@System

It was also funny to see the BBC's attempt at a 100-day catch-up of Mamdani. Since their reporter isn't deranged, it was just an absolute flaccid nothing of a piece. Isspent several paragraphs trying (and frankly failing) to make something out of him filling a thousand potholes since taking office.

Jess Babbitt

If you’ve got a spare 2.5 hours that video about why Vanessa lost BB17 is actually pretty great

Chris Kiser

A little nitpicky, but I thought it was weird for Michael & Peter to repeatedly quip about Zohran being hated by DSA & relating him to a centrist mayor. Like, the DSA issue over whether or not to endorse a particular primary challenger was criticized by people in DSA, but that was a tactical disagreement, not some major political schism. He's still greatly loved & admired on the left, especially among DSA folks who are often very pragmatic themselves. Zohran has compromised on certain niche things, but he has overall governed from the left & the biggest thing he's been doing in his first 100 days is waging a political battle with gov Hochul over taxing the rich. All of the smaller stuff he's been doing like filling potholes isn't particularly "centrist" but humanistic in character. I get that there's a temptation to normalize Zohran by presenting him as less of a radical, but I think that inadvertently gives too much credit to centrism as the kind of reasonable, pragmatic political position. The reality is Zohran's pragmatism fits squarely within what actual left wing governance looks like & that's exactly why all the demonization of the left is so patently absurd.

Seancé Knowles

David, here it is. My philosophy is basically this. And this is something that I live by. And I always have. And I always will. Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what. No matter... where. Or who, or who you are with, or, or where you are going, or... or where you've been... ever. For any reason, whatsoever. -Erika Kirk -Michael Scott

Sarah

Wait, does this mean Michael watches Jarvis Johnson or other people who summarize reality shows

Maya

“Measles of the mind”

Bill Pertler

Peter is 100% correct on a Connect 4 but I will add: any of those way too low strategy games are ruined if you ever think about them for more than a few minutes

Meggy Parsec

MY boss just recently informed me that "breakfast" refers to one's metabolism breaking down food faster in the morning. You are now more woke, and you're welcome 😌

Ben Alpers

Glad you're finally acknowledging the Chess Truthers among your listeners!

Borangehat

"An encampment sweep for the politically homeless" is a killer joke.

Pavel Lishin

Definitely need a Patreon exclusive Connect Four match up.

Shanda Wells

Bari is like, "thank you so much for joining" - esp. since no one else is now! Her tanking their ratings is the best comeuppance.

Sophie!!!

Re: Erica Kirk, literally the number one reason not to leave your kid alone with an iPad is that they might start watching TPUSA.

Arin Rogers (not the football player) is a beautiful angel

One thing that I think is often missing from these analyses: but why do right-wingers have such insane reactions to anodyne language from the center/left? To me it's because the vast majority of right-wing political speech is bad faith, and they fundamentally lack empathy, so they believe that this must be true of speech from the left and center as well. That's why there's nothing Mamdani can say that will not provoke a histrionic response: everything is going to be read as a shot fired for the leftists/Marxists/Islamists/etc. This is especially obvious when you contrast with someone like Weiss who is actually disguising right-wing propaganda as bland word salad every time she speaks. Of course, it's complicated by the fact that the criticism of Mamdani itself is being done in bad faith, but I think a lot of commentators on the right are genuinely triggered by center/left speech and I don't see why that is talked about very often.

Jake Wood

I also watched the "I solved connect 4". 😂

Jake Wood

It's actually a really fun video.

Owen Phillips

In REAL LIFE, when Michael said "a bald eagle caws" in this episode, an ACTUAL bald eagle flew past me at work

Phillip Burns

After watching Folding Ideas and Big Joel take swings, I’m all in on Michael & Peter watching Beast Games. Part reality tv, part game theory, all big mistakes.

OuijaFBabysMama

Scoops of ideas and its just poop on beautiful waffle cone plz merch plz

Cate Kneale

I seem to remember seeing an advert for a new stupider Connect 4 but I can't even remember how that worked.

Cate Kneale

This episode should have ended with one of those captions to tell us what Eric Adams is doing now.

Angelo Encapera

Wasn't the Kirk killers entite family hardcore MAGA?

Beth Frieden

Enjoyed this ep guys. Just want to add that one of the things that pisses me off consistently in the discourse about Khalil is that nobody seems able to mention how his detention was an act of real violence against his wife. Like, having given birth twice, I would have been super traumatised by not being able to have my partner there. It's so deeply misogynist to keep him from helping her with that. Anyway, keep up the good work, solidarity from Glasgow, Scotland.

Cassidy

Y’all’s episodes make my week even if they are rough lol

kathleen

Thank you for this great listening, esp the discussion of Powelll. I'm not a regular Atlantic reader so thank you for reporting from that trench. (The Khalil post by Mamdani made me sniffle.) I know I am not the arbiter of what is humor, and I might just be a dusty buzzkill. But. At best Trump to me is adjacent funny in the Grandpa's Gears are Slipping The Joke Didn't Land, Laugh So We Can Change The Subject Way. Because he's abusive, those zingers (more like sparkling snipes) are situated in me waiting for something really shitty to come out of his mouth. Experiencing humor as a sigh of relief isn't fun. There's probably a lot that can be said about the fact that when his jokes do land "I hate that this guy's funny" or "you have to admit he's funny sometimes" is a common leftist media commentator response. I don't mean that in a "how do these chumps fall for it?" way. Like I said, I'm not CEO of Jokes. I'm interested in the language and culture of it all. I'm obviously missing something. Except, I'm not ready to have to think remotely critically about yet another joke externalizing My Name is Donald Trump And I Crave Attention, Power, and Money. Yes, Donald. You are a narcissist who fears that if eyes aren't on you, you don't exist at all. Ha ha. Well played.

Daisy

I just finished my phd and michael triggered flashbacks of my incredible embarrassment of when i wrote an entire paper accidentally using “casual” instead of “causal”

I’m so glad you both love Arrival as much as I do. I couldn’t agree more that it’s the best thing of the last 15 years. Also thank you for making me laugh—I lost my beloved cat of 19 years last week and listening to your Eric Adams episodes again was the only thing that could make me feel like smiling. I’m going to miss Captain Ahab Peter riffing on his Moby Dick Adams.

Ryan Frazier

Agreed, I also simply haven't seen it. Maybe its on x or bluesky but as a lefty and Bernie supporter I am thrilled with Zohran and would love to see more like him.

iva antonie

i think this is the first time i've heard the word "anadine" and the ep kinda made up for the 35 years of not knowing it. loved all your takes tho! ❤️

I would pay good money to watch you guys dish it out at connect four on twitch

I swear when they played the clip of her talking I heard “you can choose to have evil in your heart or you can choose to have white”

Jon Heider

It is a delicate balance between wanting to hear clips of these CBS freaks and the dread of actually having to sit through them.

Ryan E

Yeah fr. DSA got him elected, rumors of their infighting are GREATLY exaggerated

Bea

Not sure you guys should be criticising someone earning six figures for a once-a-month output 😂

M

As an NYC public defender I will say that they arrest homeless folks for “taking up two seats on the subway” which is a crime believe it or not. So when the Post says “offenses going up” it could just be this. If it were “violent crime” they would have says so. And NYPD DOES seem to be arresting for this again after many years of stopping.

Stephanie Bolduc Mikesell

Having a problem where my psychiatrist is making me read Driven to Distraction but my internal monologue is reading it in Mike’s sarcastic reading voice

Maxine Iglich

I just took the MTA’s spring survey and under the (paraphrasing) “What’s wrong with your station?” section they had “poor lighting,” “narrow platform,” and “presence of homeless”. Also, thank you for your work!

charlotte

Michael says so many things in this that are low key kinda dumb? Like within a five minute span, he says that he doesn’t think it’s true that CBS news is on a secular decline, that Ellison can throw money into in perpetuity (despite Oracles massive losses this year and the financing structure of the deal), and that NBA teams are money losing vanity projects. I’ve lowkey been feeling this a lot, but the degree to which he states things confidently that are at best very debatable (the decline of evening news) and at worst totally factually incorrect (the profitability of NBA teams) makes me feel like he’s just not that smart?

Astraea

As a resident of a permanently pothole-afflicted city (not NYC), that actually sounds like a piece I'd love, but I fully admit it's not, like, a ratings blockbuster.

Astraea

THANK YOU I had to go back and reprocess that to make sure I hadn't heard what I thought I'd heard!

Harley

just scrolled down to say this. its all anodyne !!

Astraea

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Welcome to the weird, weird world of finally being done with the thing that has consumed your entire life for 4-7 years. :)

Harley

Definitely agree about the first bit: he's not a centrist & it's weird to compare him to one or deradicalize him! But the DSA chapter in my area is actually very divided about electoral politics and argue about it generally. When I told a DSA friend that I was excited about Mamdani, they started arguing with me 😭 I genuinely really hope that isn't how all chapters are, but I've been to my local DSA meetings and the vibes are infighting for sure.

Astraea

Um... The decline of mainstream news in all formats, but *especially* traditional television, is extremely well documented and is arguably why right-wingers have been able to buy up so many once-reputable news organizations like CBS. And I'd be shocked if Ellison's personal wealth is strongly impacted by anything that happens with Oracle - the very rich don't really get their wealth from W4 salaries, and anyway, Ellison doesn't own CBS personally, he controls it through Skydance. More importantly, I don't believe Ellison bought CBS with the intention of ever making money. The whole point was to turn CBS into a propaganda arm for reactionary centrism and/or the Trump administration - I'm certain he expects to have to burn a certain amount of money every year to make that happen. The very rich can, indeed, afford to keep throwing endless money at their expensive vanity projects. I can't comment about owning sports teams as I know nothing about them... But it wouldn't shock me if profitability is both highly volatile and highly team-dependent.

bee

Fellow DSAer here and I do think there are some wild dynamics within my chapter, but pretty much everyone is at least mostly happy with Zohran. Sure, some people may quibble a bit here or there that he could/should do more or be further to the left, but overall people are VERY pro-Mamdani. Buy could I write a screenplay or a novel about the internal dynamics of DSA? Yes. Yes I could.

Astraea

I think part of it is projection, as you say ("this is what we do so this must be what liberals are doing too"), but frankly, I think a lot of it is a consequence of deliberate disinformation, propaganda, and lies. They are told that liberals "secretly" want to do all sorts of awful things to them, so when a lib says something like "I think we should try fare-free public transportation" you end up with some poor schmuck who reads too much of The Atlantic saying things like "Liberals want to waste your tax money on making public transportation less safe and less efficient because they believe in victimology" or some bullshit. Like yes, they do lack empathy and they do not engage in good faith. But also, plenty of otherwise more or less sane people keep seeing things in liberal politicians' statements that aren't there *because they have been deliberately lied to* for many decades. It's just...so hard to disentangle all of this in such a shitty, poisoned media environment....

bee

Owning sports teams is wildly profitable. I love Mike, but I nearly did an actual spit take when he said that owning an NBA franchise isn't profitable. No one's perfect, but yikes on bikes, Mike.

Grump

I think it was a moment of the hosts outing themselves as a more lib than they imagine themselves to be, doing the savy political style they criticize in others - implicitly bought into the idea that pragmatic good governance is incompatible with being in the good graces of the left, and taking whatever the dumbest bluesky post they've seen from a teenage communist as their understanding of the DSA position.

Astraea

Deep cut callback, I love it!

DrearyTina

I love that when I started listening to this podcast I thought Bari Weiss was Candice Owens; and now I'm the street she grew up on away from being able to steal her idenity.

Lance Charisma

Hearing about someone getting shot in a mental health ward made me feel sick. Working in a mental health ward in Australia we do very rarely have police come in to support us with an exceptionally dangerous and agitated patient. But the worst I've heard happening is them using pepper spray. And I'm only aware of that happening once in my ten years. The idea that one of these cops would even touch their firearm in that situation is insane to me.

Let's Get Medieval

I think the issue is not so much "home ownership" as it is "dozens and dozens of homes ownership"

Looking forwards to another year of If Books Could Kill scoops of scoopitation.

AHAHA i swear i was planning to check the spelling... and immediatelly forgot :D thanks!

Jolanta Benal

I've never found a single "joke" of his funny. The essential nastiness is always audible even when taken in isolation some line might be amusing.

Wyatt Evert

Michael you didn’t hear a bald eagle caw, that was a red tail hawk. They dub over bald eagles to make them sound more badass.

gretchen anderson

I am convinced chatGPT wrote the thing about the “officer involved shooting” editorial from the Post.

Zero Gravitas

DSA is inherently divided and full of controversy and strife because it's a big tent of many political tendencies. There is no clear political line that people can adopt, nor democratic centralism, and so the best that can be hoped for is a series of small wins dispersed over years (which may be publicly denounced by some sects of the big tent). There's nothing wrong with some small wins, but it does not a revolution make.

I think it's fair to say that homeownership itself was a tool of white supremacy in the US because of our particular history of redlining, banks refusing to lend to Black folk, excluding them from government programs like FHA loans, etc. That's no longer *explicitly* stated in US law, but the consequences are still there in the racial wealth gap (and frankly there's a lot of de facto racial discrimination in housing nowadays, even if it's no longer enshrined in law).

CLC

I hate you guys for making me listen to clips of these people.

Sorry I swear I am not a patron to just be mean to Mike, but how many times are we going to hear "this guy is being mean to the left but nice to the right!" like. I think we all collectively realize that none of these centrist dipshits are capable of actually good journalism or even just good faith op-eds.

Scoops of ideas. Scoops of ice cream.

You can get a double-scoop of ideas with a sprinkle of human interest stories on CBS News Sundae Morning.

Astraea

Mike talked about her on In Bed With The Right (I think their Cursties episode last year or the year before). Apparently the more conservative press tried to slander her with "Do you know she doesn't even own a HOUSE or a CAR? She RENTS and takes public transportation!!" And most normal people responded with "Uh those are some things I like about her, sounds like she might actually know what my life is like."

Tara McCarthy

Not sure if either of you are watching Daredevil Born Again, but it’s kind of fascinating in the modern context.

M ‘Have you had an experience where your boss is dumb as shit?’ Well yes actually I worked at the company that published You Are a Badass. And it wasn’t my boss so much as the entire company

Alien@System

Regarding "Grit", this really had all the hallmarks of a Maintenance Phase story. There's this scientific idea we want to measure, we come up with a measure that can at best be described as "least bad", we all focus on that instead of all the more immediate factors and immediately elevate it to national policy, before the science even had the chance to actually figure out and refine the measure, and even worse, before there was any data to actually hint that this is a malleable measure. And suddenly it turns out all we've been doing is burning money on doing nothing but increasing stigma for certain already disadvantaged groups.

Sydney Smith

‘Idea Scoop’ is very much giving former-opinion-section tries to do real journalism

Astraea

The bonus episodes have always been about whatever the hosts want to talk about, and are not limited to books. Personally I love it - the meme stock cult and organized retail crime episodes are some of my favorite repeat listens.

Everyone is fine with a dictator as long as they get to be the dictator. Look at your average HOA, that's what we're talking about. Thats what Bari is doing everywhere she goes.

Patrick

Came here to say this, outrageous!

J

My kid is a high school senior, and got spam from Bari's new college. Here's an excerpt: "Dear ____, You never applied to the University of Austin (UATX). We're admitting you anyway. Your test scores is above our threshold for automatic admission, so consider this your acceptance letter... We just need you to fill out this five-minute form to make your admittance official." So that seems to be going well.

(I hope it's okay to post here about the most recent main-feed episode, Think and Grow Rich! If not, I can delete this comment, I just wasn't sure where to share this.) The (hilarious) J. B. Rhine/parapsychology jumpscare reminded me of a three-part series about the topic from The Constant, another great podcast, if it's alright to share a link? It includes really fun discussions of Clever Hans and other psychic horses, Zener cards, Uri Geller, the recent replication crisis in science, etc. The first episode (the one with the quality talking-horse content) is here: https://www.constantpodcast.com/episodes/psych-out-part-1-lady-wonder On a more relevant note, I really enjoyed this bonus episode! Discussion of news media can feel... bleak lately, but it's weirdly comforting to hear other people acknowledging that. It's also nice to hear other people cover the interviews and incidents I just couldn't convince myself to dig into, so thank you for taking that hit for us!

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

Listening to Think and Grow Rich and these guys always make me think of a line from The Maria Bamford Show where she says, "I'm becoming a life coach! And the only requirement to become a life coach is to never have succeeded in anything you've ever tried, especially show business, and at the prospect of full time work, you feel kind of achy and tired."

Mo

Gonna Google "I solved connect 4" right now this sounds like a great video

Dalton Runberg

Can you do a "dumbest Colbert takes" bonus episode? There seem to be a lot of them!

Dalton Runberg

They're not saying that they find him being funny when he's intentionally trying to be funny. It's when he says something completely seriously but it's the dumbest thing ever but in a uniquely Trump way, which makes it funny.

Autumn BR

I’m so happy the idea scoop joke is continuing in the future episodes. This absolutely cracks me tf up

LadySwayze

Bari misunderstanding “a scoop” reminded of the office when Andy can’t grasp Michael’s golden ticket promotion. Michael: We’re a business. Post-its. That is a golden ticket idea. NASA took five or six golden ticket ideas to get man on the moon. Andy: Golden Girls. That’s a golden ticket idea, right, I mean how great was that show? Golden Grahams. Another, is it – I don’t get this…

I just can't get over the contrast: left mayoral staff person tweets something about homeownership bekng unethical then apologies (all over half a decade ago) - we should be deeply concerned. Right wing president of the United States says in present day that his opposition should be put to death - why are you so worked up? Just constantly blatently gaslighting the general public
