so for this piece i used my most common digital workflow, which is; sketch > lineart > flats > render. i used clip studio paint for this, and photoshop as usual to do final colour correction.

for future reference, i've put the pictures in the main photo gallery above here as well as the post because if i embed them only in the post, they compress to a tiny resolution.

sketch

i used some reference for the poses but changed a lot and did my own thing for the most part.

lineart

i just used a textured ink brush that i found on the CSP website. i can link it if anyone is interested.

flats

'flats' refers to flat colours, because the shapes are filled in but there's no shading. the word originally comes from the comics world.

rendering

'draw the rest of the owl'. hahaha. i found a couple of references in my files for torso anatomy, but other than than i just went into zen mode and painted things how i usually paint.

i also posted some full resolution zooms of the drawing at the top because i liked the faces! :D

I really appreciate this chance to have a glimpse over Your shoulder! This is so very helpful to get at least an idea how the final masterpiece developed. Thank You so much for breaking down the whole process into the distinctive sub steps – helps to bring some kind of organization into all the “mystery” of creation.

you’re very welcome! i look forward to writing more in depth posts. hahah masterpiece is a big word i wouldn’t use myself but i’ll accept the flattery 😅😅

Isn't it the topic of Your artwork here? To accept? ;-) :-)
