This movie was the definition of organized chaos! What an absurd, nonsensical, delightful comedy. I'm thrilled to have finally seen such a classic film and finally see the origins of "Don't call me Shirley."

Glad you enjoyed it. " I just want to say good luck, we're all counting on you." Lol

You could never do the Israeli airways joke in a movie today. You really couldn't do almost all these jokes in a movie today... too many snowflakes in this politically correct world today. You knotted exactly hood to interpret that and it's something that could never be shown in a Hollywood Jovi today. lol... you missed the guy in the taxi at the end of the credits. Flying on instruments, I men come on!

Chester Beals

Jax, there absolutely was an after-credits scene with the taxi....

Senec

This was great :D Lets keep it goin with The Naked Gun. It stars Leslie Nielson, the doctor in this movie.

Tim Heron

Now, on to "The Naked Gun"! It's from the same writer-directors, and stars Leslie Nielsen.

Mike Smith

I hadn't seen Airplane in a long time and I forgot how raunchy it is. My dad loves this movie and he showed it to me when I was around 10. I have no idea what he was thinking. Fortunately I can safely say most of the jokes went completely over my head! 😅

Liam Harrold

there was an after credits scene you missed that would of clarified one of your interests lol

Michael Kemmet

Several have already mentioned there was an after credits scene, but another thing to know about Zucker Abrahams Zucker(ZAZ) movies is there are often jokes buried in the credits themselves. Just something to note if you eventually do the Naked Gun, Hot Shots, or Top Secret movies. You didn't miss much on this one. Just that Mike Finnell was "Generally in Charge of a Lot of Things", and that Charles Dickens was the author of A Tale of Two Cities. lol

I'm not going to explain all the jokes(that would be too long of a post even for me), but here are the 10 most obvious jokes in the movie that are hardest to understand today: 1. Staying Alive dancing scene - Watch "Saturday Night Fever"(1977) starring John Travolta. 2. Beach scene - Watch "From Here to Eternity"(1953) about the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and the days just beforehand. 3. Creepy Pilot - this one is complicated - Airplane! basically reuses the script of a bad 1957 melodramatic film called "Zero Hour!". In that movie, the pilot(played by Sterling Hayden) isn't deliberately creepy, but he looks at the kid a little oddly when talking to him. The filmmakers decided to blow that up into a joke. Also, the Turkish prison comment was in reference to a memoir that had been recently made into a film called "Midnight Express"(1978). The author/main character was imprisoned in said Turkish prison and "bad things" happened to him. 4. Nun with a guitar - There was a real person called The Singing Nun. Her life story was (loosely) turned into a 1966 film. 5. "Jim never has a 2nd cup at home" - This (and the actors) are from a coffee commercial from the period. The couple visit a friend's home and Jim likes the coffee so much he has a second cup, which he never does at home. 6. Why the doctor was wearing a stethoscope - Airplane headphones at the time were pneumatic instead of electronic, so the regular headphones looked very similar to a stethoscope. You can see the regular ones when the passengers are watching the plane crash movie. 7. Boy Trapped in Refrigerator Eats Own Foot - Most people don't catch that this headline is in the National Enquirer; a joke in the world of journalism for the last 99 years. 8. Radar Range(or Radarange) - The first microwave oven commercially sold. Microwaves didn't start becoming commonplace until the late 70s. 9. The horse - I'm not 100% sure about this one either. I suspect it's mostly a reference to The Godfather(1972). But there's enough other risqué stuff in the film that it might really be a reference to the traits Mrs. Oveur finds important in a bed partner. 10. "Win One for the Zipper" - This is a reference to "Knute Rockne, All American"(1940); a movie co-starring Ronald Reagan as George Gipp. The movie is about Knute Rockne(obviously) and the Notre Dame football program in the early 1900s. Gipp(a real person), was a player on the team that died of an illness. On his deathbed, Gipp asks Rockne to someday tell the team to 'win one for the Gipper". Reagan would use the line during his presidential campaign of 1979-80, so it was a very topical joke. The music playing underneath the scene is the Notre Dame Victory March. Honorable Mention - The actress translating the Jive talk was Barbara Billingsley. She was most well known for playing the mom in "Leave it to Beaver". So she would have been viewed as the most white bread of white bread women by audiences at the time.

I love that as soon as you heard about the nozzle on the beltline of the automatic pilot, you knew EXACTLY what was going to happen. I cracked up laughing Jax! This is truly a comedy classic, arguably the best comedy ever made. I love that you recognized that a big part of the genius of this movie is everyone playing their parts totally straight. This movie really changed Leslie Nielson's career too. Until this movie he'd mainly played dramatic villain roles and after this, he became forever known as a comedic actor. Robert Stack who played Rex Kramer was also a huge help on set because he totally understood what this movie was and other actors were having problems getting it so he helped them adjust their method. Also, the cab passenger is a significantly funnier joke than most people get. The man playing him was Howard Jarvis who was a very fiscally conservative man, meaning he was very tight about money and spending, so the idea that he'd patiently sit in a cab with the meter running up over 100 dollars is so sutble, but hilarious.

I just watched it with you, and they very much returned back to the guy in the taxi, even if you didn't. I guess Airplane! did mid or end scenes before Marvel.

I think Ted got over his drinking problem. Another thing to note Leslie Nielsen was a very accomplished dramatic actor. This movie turned his life/career around.

David Olden

Loved your reaction, Jax. As others have pointed out, you still have one more credits scene you didn’t include here. It’s right at the end of the credits.

Robert Inman

Jax, as mentioned by others, several of the big name actors were selected for this precisely because they weren't known as comedians. Lloyd Bridges (Jeff Bridges' father) starred in an action series called "Sea Hunt" Robert Stack in a drama "The FBI"(in color 😃), Peter Graves in the original "Mission Impossible" series, and Leslie Nielsen famously starred in "Forbidden Planet" among other dramatic roles (but finished his career in comedic roles)

You should watch wrongfully accused… another comedy movie from him

My favorite gag that i can't remember anyone getting is the fact that the external shots has the visual of a jet liner, but has the propeller noise of an old school prop plane..

Also, I heard somewhere that the woman who was surprised at the second cup of coffee is the same one who was in the TV commercial.

One joke I missed for probably 35 years was in the end credits. Otto as himself, it took me all that time to put together Otto Pilot.

I think someone commented that they used the film Zero Hour as a guide for this movie. All the producers/writers had to do was add the jokes. Here is a short side-by-side comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-v2BHNBVCs&t=2s Also, the man and woman doing the red zone/white zone announcements are the real people that made the announcements at the real airport, and they are actually married. Also, there is a "rule of 3's" in comedy. A lot of jokes are done 3 times. Like in the bar he threw his hat away and it came back, he threw his jacket and it came back, and he threw Elaine and she came back. The exception was McCroskey quitting sniffing glue. That was 4, so I guess it was just icing on the cake, so to speak. Most reactors look at the title of the magazine he's reading, not the labels on the shelves. Good for you, you caught that one. Most reactors zero in on the heart at the Mayo Clinic and I don't know how they fail to see all the mayo on the shelves. When is gets his ticket and says, "No baggage!" he's got all that emotional baggage. A lot of reactors miss that one. You're one of the few that got the "classified" information joke. Capt. Oveur and his wife must have had an...............interesting home life. He asked all the inappropriate questions to the boy and she slept with a horse. Kudos to you! You're one of the very few that got the headquarters joke in the hospital. The hospital cameo was Ethel Merman's last role. No one seems to see the big "missionary" stew pot behind the basketball players. Anita Bryant was a controversial person back in the 70s and 80s. She sang during orange juice commercials, but publicly ranted about gays. I couldn't tell if you got the gag about Kramer walking through the mirror. They made the control panel look complicated with the dials and lights. But I used to operate a nuclear power plant and that plane's control panel is nothing compared to the control room in a nuclear plant. YES! You're the first one to notice that they were talking to each other on the phone even though they were across the desk from each other. The horse in the bed could be a jab at the Godfather, or it could be a reference to "he's hung like a horse." The first microwaves were made by Amana and were called Radar Ranges. Also, Gunderson, the radar guy shows up again in Beverly Hills Cop. I don't know if you've watched it or not. I love the way the guy beating on the log with the news switches from camera 1 to camera 2. Most reactors miss the Air Israel gag. I still can't believe it's only rated PG. You've got a great sense of humor! What a great reaction! Thanks! :)
