What a trip down memory lane! This was a very revealing episode. Despite being quite emotional, it was wonderful to finally have answers to some important questions.

Oscar got his real-life brother Michael on the show as a stand-in. Whenever Oscar was portraying Marc, Michael would portray Steven and vice versa. Then the post-production team worked their magic. Oscar did a lot of research on DID before going into this show. That included reading a book called A Fractured Mind. Author Robert Oxnam revealed in the book that he had eight alters living with him that he didn’t know about until he was in his 40’s. I joined my sister for her first time watching this show. I especially wanted her to watch this episode because I wanted her input about the show’s take on mental health. We paused this episode twice to talk about what was going on, but the second pause had sparked a conversation that went on for about half an hour. We talked about mental health in general because we both deal with our own struggles and know people who also struggle. She also helped me clarify who Marc was talking to when he said “I won’t give you that satisfaction.” I figured he was saying that to his father Elias because the latter wanted his son to grieve with him, but my sister said it made more sense he would be saying that to his mom Wendy because from Marc’s point of view she doesn’t deserve to be mourned after all the torment she inflicted. The reason why I say Marc was saying that to Elias was because even though he didn’t take part in the abuse the fact that he didn’t do anything about it makes him just as responsible as Wendy for the DID. By the way, Marc is Jewish in the comics as well. The comic version of his father was a Czechoslovakian rabbi. He was also the cause of Marc’s trauma.

this ep made me cry so hard. I felt so bad for Mark when his Mom couldn't cope.😥

Ned Flanders is from The Simpsons

Joe

What a great and heartbreaking story. Amazing performance in this episode. Also, did I hear "Who's Ned Flanders?!?" I thought everyone knew Simpsons characters.

It seemed clear to me that Marc was the original because he knew so much more about their past.

The brother's death was 100% the fault of the parents. It was already starting to rain before they left, and who let's their young children go explore a cave unsupervised? You had a much more charitable view on the parents than I did, though that might stem from not having great parents myself. The mother yelling that it was Marc's fault at the funeral could have been excusable due to grief, but to carry on abusing him for the rest of her life... There's no excuse for that. Shame on the father as well for not protecting his son.

it started in 89. but has lasted 36 years. It’s definitely also a millennial and Gen Z thing. My Gen alpha sister loves the show too

Great reaction! As to your question about knowing if Steven was the original or not Most comic fans knew Marc was the original (Moon Knight is from the 70s but the DID was added later by other writers. So at the time he was only Marc Spector). But it was still great to see how they executed the reveal Episode 5 is my favourite due to how emotional it was

Not knowing who Ned Flanders is.....minus 16 trillion cool points Jax!....long climb to get back up!

Based on your comments here, you would love the show "The Good Place" assuming you haven't already seen it. I'd heartily recommend it.
