The You You Are

Who knew Ricken would be a such an inspiring force within the horrifically repressed world of the Lumen Severed floor? This episode felt like a real turning point for these characters. I'm psyched to see what comes next.

Seemed like the Helly drama distracted from noticing that Mark sculpted a tree....

This episode is one of the best episodes to rewatch once you’ve seen everything by the end of season 1…and again once you’ve finished season 2. I do want to point out, at the end…all the things about that Wellness Session. • Why did Cobell call for it, surprising even Mr. Milchick? • Why did Cobell have that candle of Mark’s late wife for it? • Why did Mark sculpt a tree? • And…why was Cobell watching SO intently as to how that Wellness Session went? After all, if Cobell wasn’t so distracted by that, maybe she would’ve seen what Helly was doing there… Also, I love June and her father’s version of Enter Sandman. No deeper thoughts than that. I hope if I ever have a daughter, I’m that cool of a dad to her, and that cool with her.

Those are some great points about the Wellness Session. I'll definitely be watching this season more than once. There's so much to take in!

Hey Jax, I'm Dan, I just joined your Patreon yesterday, specifically because I wanted to see your unedited reaction to The Big Lebowski, since you really reveled in it on your YouTube edit. 😁 But now I'm having a blast watching, for the first time, Severance with you! At this date you've already uploaded the next 2 episodes, but I wanted to say some things before I continued on, & then I can see how right/wrong I was later. You keep thinking that Milchik may be related to Helly, but I don't think so, simply because at that first-day meeting, I'm pretty sure he said, "looking at the room here, I'd say she does have a family", meaning her new Lumon co-workers are now her family. (Sounds pretty 'cult-y'.) A side note about Milchik's name I find funny is 'milchik' is a Yiddish word that refers to an aspect of Kosher law. It refers to "a food that is dairy or cooked with dairy ingredients". (In Kosher law, there's a strict separation between dairy foods & meat foods, they're never eaten or cooked together. There's a severance, one could say, between them.😉) The pronunciation in Yiddish has the guttural "ch", like in German, or when one says "Yecchhh" 😝, but they don't pronounce it that way on the show. Now, I have zero idea if this was just a coincidence or done on purpose, but I like to think a writer saw the word in print & decided to use it as a character name. Who knows. From this episode, specifically the video that 'outie' Helly made for 'innie' Helly, the way she said "your resignation is denied", I got the distinct impression that Helly is someone who has been with Lumon for a while and for whatever reason, decided she wanted to undergo severance & work on the Severed floor. Little did she know, though, how much she would despise it. That's my feeling. Don't worry, I won't come back to this thread to say whether or not I was right, I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I'm only guessing ahead. It took me a while to realize that Mark would not recognize his brother-in-law as the author of the book; of course, an 'innie' has no idea who they're related to! 😆 But I was also surprised that his sister didn't ask on the phone call about the book! In the Perpetuity Wing, when they were listening to Eagan's philosophy, he said he identified 4 Tempers in human nature. The painting of someone threatening 4 figures with a whip is a symbolic illustration of Eagan taming the 4 Tempers within. And lastly, what the hell?!! Helly can't die, she's, in a way, THE main character, the one by which we've been seeing just how bad the Lumon experience is! Not JUST her, of course, but to a great extent! One last thing, I can't decide whether Harmony had a premeditated reason why she would swipe Mark's candle from the basement, or if taking that & the present left at his door was indicative of a kleptomania issue. Ok, enough rambling for one comment. Catch ya later on down the trail 🍺💖
