Here is my full reaction to The Man In The Iron Mask!
The film is beautifully made, engaging, suspenseful, and genuinely gripping. Still, I found myself struggling with the story itself. It’s incredibly grim. That said, the cast has fantastic chemistry, and their performances bring a rich, compelling world to life.
This movie wrecked me. At times, I felt genuinely angry at the sheer lack of justice. There’s wrongful imprisonment, elements of body horror, corruption, greed, cruelty, hypocrisy, and characters that are sometimes difficult to root for.
Earlier this week, I watched Disney’s The Three Musketeers, which is based on the first novel by Alexandre Dumas featuring these characters. In that story, they’re young, idealistic, and living in a world that feels far more straightforward. The Man in the Iron Mask, however, draws from the final installment in the series and it shows. These are not the same men.
Nearly 40 years have passed, and life has clearly taken its toll. They’re older, more jaded, and shaped by hardship. The original novel is deeply tragic and menacing, but the film introduces a sense of lightness that I appreciate in retrospect.
I always imagined the Three Musketeers as timeless heroes, symbols of loyalty, honor, and unwavering brotherhood. But after learning more about the books, it’s clear they’re far more flawed and morally complex. Their once unbreakable bond fractures and their famous motto, “All for one and one for all,” doesn’t stand the test of time.
Dumas seems to challenge the romanticized idea of heroism, exposing the illusion of chivalry in a complicated world. There’s even a layer of satire in how loyalty can be misplaced and how dangerous it can be to blindly follow the wrong people.
I know this is a bit long-winded, but stories like this are worth digging into. These characters were created centuries ago, yet they still captivate audiences today.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Did you enjoy the movie or have you read the books? The Three Musketeers is still on my reading list.

The Real Man In The MaskFor anyone interested, my Google deep dive concluded with the theory that the real man in the mask was Roux de Marsilly’s valet, often identified as Martin or Eustache Dauger. (Not to be confused with Eustache Dauger of Cavoye who was was also imprisoned around the same time.)
Here's a detailed theory from Scottish historian Andrew Lang:https://www.online-literature.com/andrew_lang/valets-tragedy/1/
