Here is my full reaction to The 13th Warrior (1999)!

This was a fun, engaging action/adventure film! Thirteen warriors are brought together by fate to save a defenseless village. The movie stands out because it avoids some of the more traditional action movie conventions. The characters are friendly and familiar, but we never really get too close to them. They remain elusive, like figures from history that you learn about but never truly know. The cinematography shines and the battle sequences were thrilling. My favorite character was obviously the dog. Also, one of the movie’s greatest highlights was the sudden appearance of sheep!!

Oh shit I love this movie!

Adapted from the book by Michael Crichton (of Jurassic Park fame). The bulk of the story is loosely based on the story of Beowulf. If you've never seen the 2007 animated Beowulf movie you might want to check it out. It didn't perform super well but it was one of the first major motion capture films and it looks really cool. Also, I recommend First Knight (1995) if you're in the mood for another '90s medieval action flick. It's a little over the top but great cast. I won't spoil it but it's based on a well known legendary story.

I always thought the girl should have left with Antonio Banderas at the end. Thanks Jax!

Phillip Arthur

Thanks Jax, this was an interesting and incredible film with Antonio Banderas the woman should've chosen him!! He was a hero. Fun fact Banderas also voices the adorable Puss in Boots in all the Shrek films and his own solo movies. His voice his legendary. Loved this so much ♥️

Mike Smith

I never even heard of this movie and I absolutely loved it! I love discovering hidden gems on your channel. I always learn something new from your reactions, like the main character traditionally having an internal obstacle and an external obstacle. I agree with you that this movie was highly engaging despite the lack of an internal obstacle. This is the kind of insight that keeps me subscribed! By the way, your hair looks great! I really love it when you wear it up like that.

It's funny seeing Antonio Banderas have to act so hapless at first with the sword because he's actually a tremendously skilled swordsman. I totally suggest watching The Mask of Zorro Jax if you want to see more of him and he certainly pulled a lot from that character for his portrayal as Puss in Boots! I think you'd really love that movie. It has action and romance and not one, but two revenge plots! I think it also has some sheep! Really enjoyed this movie, it gave me some Magnificent Seven vibes with the group of men banding together to protect a village and form a bond of brotherhood! The dog in the movie was indeed a Irish wolfhound that they dyed red so it would standout in shots because his natural gray fur would just blend in!

Most of this movie is fiction. But there was a real Ahmad ibn Fadlan who was a diplomat to the Volga Bulgars, where he did meet viking. He wrote detailed observation about them, including the Viking ship funeral involving sacrifice. But he never did travel north with them. His account is name : Risala of Ahmad ibn Fadlan.

Thanx for doing this one Jax. This has one of those surreal holds in my mind. There were so many ideas and story devices used in this that made it feel a bit magic. I especially loved the depiction of Ahmed learning the language. I think this was also one of the first times I'd seen in a period piece a depiction of culture and values that better reflected the era than superimpose modern morality onto a past story; a bit like what Game of Thrones did. So that even though we saw the our heroes of the saw commit acts of barbarism, their honour and defend of the defenceless won us over. Also, so relieved the sheep survived
