Here is my full reaction to Heated Rivalry S1 E1-2!

Heated Rivalry jumped right into the action and the romance! I went in completely blind without even watching a trailer, so I expected it to have a stronger sports focus. But it looks like this is a full on romance. This show was a little steamier than I was expecting! There will be lots of blurring for the YouTube edits. That said, I love stories about people falling in love, especially when they leave you with an uplifting sense of hope!

Watched on: HBO Max / Runtime: E1 49:27 E2 43:33

Hope you enjoy!

This is my first time watching this with you Jax!!! A sports love story count me in!!! I've heard news that it was really good short series. And I'm enjoying myself with this one so much. ♥️♥️ Fun fact~ Real Hockey Inspiration: Author Rachel Reid, who wrote the Game Changers novel series that the show is based on, drew inspiration for the fierce on-ice dynamic from real-life NHL superstars Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin.

With the hockey and X-Men reactions lately, Wolverine's look in the '70s and '80s was based on Paul D'Amato from the movie Slap Shot (1977), a sports comedy based around ice hockey. Artist John Byrne basically used Paul D'Amato as inspiration for Wolverine. So if you check out Slap Shot, you'll see a character who strongly evokes Wolverine, both in appearance and size, as well as in his overall personality. It’s really uncanny seeing the similarities looking back. Clint Eastwood was also an influence as well. Just imagine Clint around 5'3 to 5'5 and you’ve basically got Wolverine.

The buzz surrounding this show somehow eluded me. I had never heard of it and didn’t know what to expect. Different social media algorithms I guess. Holy mother of the Hulk! I was not prepared for such sexually explicit content. I was babysitting and THANK GOD my nephews were sound asleep upstairs and the volume was on low. I don’t think I’m in the target demo, but I gave it a shot. After seeing the first two episodes, maybe my algorithm was trying to protect me!

It's great to watch someone who is actually paying attention react to this incredible series. I love how much you "get" Ilya's humor, as well as your understanding of his family situation.

Also it's really great that you understand the difference between what a character wants to say and what they feel safe saying. That is a major element in this show. The conversation going on underneath the surface.

Thought I'd share that Shane's character is autistic! This is never explicitly stated in the book or show, but it is important to understanding his character. The author Rachel Reid, the director and creator of the show Jacob Tierney, and Shane's actor Hudson Williams have all confirmed that that was an intentional character choice for the character. The only reason it's unacknowledged within the story itself is because Shane is undiagnosed. Hudson took a lot of inspiration for his performance from his own autistic father. Going forward you might notice some of these traits in Shane like the flat affect on his voice, the way he struggles to make eye contact sometimes, the way he struggles with processing his emotions, sometimes not reading the room or responding too literally, his attachment to routine and rules (like how he folds his clothes), etc.

Thought I'd give it a try. This may not sit well with some people but....gay soft porn....yuck! 🤮
