I can say this now lol but there are hundreds maybe even thousands of every gem. And with that there is a hierarchy and pearls are at the bottom of it. Which perfectly explains why the way she is. And also explains why Peri treats pearl like shit

The lower you are on the ladder, the more protective you are of your position. Peridots probably aren’t that much higher in the Gem hierarchy than Pearls, hearing one of the few people she could safely feel superior to throwing the same attitude she gets from her own masters was probably triggering. “She HAS to be lower than me. If she’s not, that means I’M at the bottom.” It wasn’t until Steven’s speech that Peridot starts thinking about how if a Pearl could become better than a Peridot, how far could a Peridot rise? Baby steps.
