For me, I think it’s the approach and tone of voice that matters most. If someone knows that I’m not telling them something is wrong, there’s a part of me that would want them to be insistent with my attempts to avoid them, but at the same time, there’s a difference between them saying, “I know that you’re not okay. I care about you,” as opposed to, “Tell me right now! I’m going to be really mad at you, if you don’t!” The second version is more forceful, and in some ways, I would feel like they are getting mad at me and demanding that they NEED me to tell them the truth to regulate THEIR emotions/making it about them. In the second case, it comes off as more controlling than being genuinely worried about me. To address your point, though, I do think it would be fair for them to say, “It hurts me to see you struggling but refusing to tell me the truth. I would hope that we have a close enough relationship that you’d never feel like you have to hide your struggles from me, so it feels unfair that that’s what you’re doing,” because it IS valid for someone who cares about me to feel hurt by me hiding my pain from them, but that’s different from them just getting mad at me and dysregulated.
