Ohhhh Babs Seed… we need to TALK. 😭

We're watching My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 3 Episode 4, "One Bad Apple!" Apple Bloom's cousin Babs Seed is visiting from Manehattan, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders are excited to welcome another "blank flank" into the group. Unfortunately, things take a turn when Babs sides with Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon and starts bullying the Crusaders instead.

But there's more going on with Babs than the girls initially realize, and this episode gets into bullying, retaliation, and what can happen when someone who's been hurt turns around and hurts someone else.

Come hang out with me for my full reaction to My Little Pony S3 E4: One Bad Apple!

I don’t think the better message would’ve been “hit your bullies back” or “fuck around and find out” either. It’s still a children’s show, and teaching kids that the mature response to someone mistreating them is to physically retaliate can just escalate the situation and turn a bullying problem into two kids fighting. Being the bigger person doesn’t mean being a pushover or letting someone do whatever they want to you, either. Kids should absolutely learn to stand up for themselves, set boundaries, walk away when they can, and get an adult involved when it continues. I think the problem with the episode is less that the CMC didn’t fight back and more that it handled the alternative pretty poorly: * It says they should’ve told Applejack, but we never really see an adult meaningfully step in and handle the bullying. * Babs being bullied in Manehattan explains her behavior, but the episode comes a little too close to using it to excuse everything she did. * The CMC end up feeling more guilt over their retaliation than Babs seems to feel for repeatedly bullying them in the first place. * They forgive and befriend Babs almost immediately instead of having her actually earn their trust back. * And weirdly, Babs basically retaliates against Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon at the end anyway by intimidating them until they fall into the mud. So after teaching the CMC that getting revenge on a bully isn’t the answer, the episode ends with Babs doing a milder version of exactly that and plays it as satisfying. I think a much better lesson would’ve been that standing up for yourself and retaliating aren’t the same thing. You don’t have to sit there and take abuse, but you also don’t need to “teach them a lesson” by hurting them back because it can cause kids to become petty and not let things go. I think telling someone, defending yourself when necessary, establishing boundaries, and not feeling obligated to forgive or become friends with someone just because you understand why they treated you badly would’ve been a better message. That would’ve kept the episode’s message about empathy without making the CMC seem like they just had to accept Babs because she had problems of her own. I just don’t think teaching kids that violence is the answer while they’re still growing is a good idea. As a adult, there are more nuances to situations, but kids doesn’t develop that level of critical thinking yet so if the message was simply about retaliating, they may develop a pattern of thinking that violence is always the answer.

Could just be the Mexican in me since I grew up in a rather tough town in Mexico but I fully agree with the "hit your bullies back" message 💔 cause I'll be damned if my daughter was getting bullied and the bullies got off completely free. Yes, tell an adult first, but if they don't do anything then you gotta swing sweetheart.

Could just be me too since I grew up in a Mexican household and was told that if I was ever hit by a bully, I got to hit back.
