People have all kinds of complicated reasons for doing the things they do, but one thing that's common to most parents is that their children is the number one priority. Shirase's mother just wanted her daughter to grow up in a world where civilians had access to Antarctica, and she saw herself as instrumental to that effort. That's how I see it, anyway.
