For each and every other end comic that gets fully birthed, polished up and sent out into the world, there are at least 10 ideas that are promptly abandoned and/or thrown off a cliff with extreme prejudice. Usually this is because they just aren’t up to our standards. But SOMETIMES it’s not that simple. SOMETIMES we have a comic idea or script that we’re pretty happy with (even if it could use some more polish), but the amount of drawing is just too much to tackle in a week. Now, I’ll spend more than a week on a comic if I’ve got a ton of confidence in it. But I can’t justify that time commitment for an idea that’s just pretty solid.

Presented below for your amusement is one such script.

(Note: while the title of this post says “never to be drawn”, there’s certainly the possibility that this idea gets a heavy rewrite and ends up getting fully produced. But I wouldn’t hold your breath)

“Ivan Davaroon’s Day Off” - Script

Ferris (a ferris bueller-type) is talking to his friend Ivan Davaroon (a Cameron-type) over the phone

FERRIS: hey Ivan, I did all sorts of hijinks to get us out of school so we can go out. So we can have a day off!!

IVAN: I don’t wanna, Ferris.

FERRIS (to camera): Ivan’s a real pussy

FERRIS (to Ivan): if you’re not coming, you gotta at least let me take your dad’s new dining table for a spin.

IVAN: No, Ferris. You can’t come over. You can’t use that table. My pop loves that table.

CUT TO Ferris is already outside his house and hops through the window.

FERRIS: Man, you gotta let me take the table for a ride. Look how nice it is! Solid oak, right? I’m gonna take the tablecloth off

IVAN: Ferris, please, don’t take the tablecloth off. My dad loves this table more than he loves me! Anything happens to this table and I’m DEAD.

Ferris takes the tablecloth off.

FERRIS: Ooh, it’s beautiful. Look at the craftsmanship. I’m gonna eat on it.

IVAN: No Ferris, you can’t!

FERRIS (to camera): And that’s when it happened, the thing that made Ivan Davaroon flip.

A cat runs into the room.

The FAT DOG is dressed as a painter and is painting a wall nearby, with paint cans and a roller brush. The cat runs through the paint tray and onto the table, making footprints across, and running off.

FAT DOG: Don’t worry, sir, I’ll get that cat.

Fat Dog throws his roller brush at the cat and it slides over the length of the table, making paint smears.

Fat Dog’s eyes go wide. He runs from the house, smashing through a plate glass window.

CUT TO Ivan sitting on a diving board above a pool, looking into the water with a blank face. Ferris is sitting in the hot tub with the Fat Dog.

FAT DOG: I’m really worried about him, Ferris. He hasn’t said a word in 3 hours.

Ivan slips off the side of the pool and falls in the water. He sinks then sits at the bottom for a few panels before he’s pulled out.

IVAN (with eyes closed): Ferris Bueller, you’re my hero.

FAT DOG: what?

Ivan opens his eyes and he’s being held by the Fat Dog.

IVAN: Where’s Ferris?

FAT DOG: As soon as you fell in, he said “I don’t care about this anymore” and he just walked away.

We see Ferris just walking away down the road, arms swinging, whistling.

THE END

I almost clapped and cheered when FAT DOG came in, now I really want to see him in all kinds of blue collar work outfits with his goofy derpy face

It's a theatre of the mind experience

Absolutely fantastic stuff, I feel like I imagined the panels as I read

I've never read a script for a comic before, and it is a surprisingly fascinating experience. Can we do a Kickstarter to turn this into a real life table read with professional actors? Ideally with Patrick Stewart reading the part of Fat Dog?

Shannon

Yeah, I agree with you that it wouldn't have been the best comic you've made :)

Scott Benson

You could probably just start phoning it in and sending us the scripts all the time. We get your style already; hatch mark shading, saggy tits, exaggerated expressions. Just be sure to include in the scripts what all the background gags are and we can assemble the comics in our head like some sorta swedish meatball.

My kids used my table once...

Pete

I see your dilemma. Are you open to script suggestions?

Neil Kohney

If this had been chosen as a week’s comic, the script would have gone through a few more drafts

Tom

Maybe they could read the script out loud and record it. Somebody told me about this thing Podcasts... Very interesting 😁
